भारती शोणितपुरे बाणपुत्री भविष्यति
Bhāratī will become the daughter of Bāṇa in the city of Śoṇita.
मायया गर्भसंकर्षान्नाम्ना संकर्षणः प्रभुः
By the power of illusion, through the transfer of the embryo, the Lord will be known as Saṃkarṣaṇa.
अर्द्धांशेनैव तुलसी लक्ष्मणा राज कन्यका
By half a portion, Tulasī will be Lakṣmaṇā, a royal maiden.
वसुंधरा सत्यभामा शैब्या देवी सरस्वती
Vasundharā, Satyabhāmā, Śaibyā, and the goddess Sarasvatī—
सूर्यपत्नी रत्नमाला कलया च जगत्प्रभोः
The wife of the Sun, Ratnamālā, by a portion of the Lord of the world—
दुर्गांशार्द्धाज्जांबवती महिषीणां दश स्मृताः
From a portion of Durgā, Jāmbavatī is known as one of the ten chief queens.
कैलासे शंकराज्ञा च बभूव पार्वतीं पुरा आलिंगनं देहि कांते नास्ति दोषो ममा ज्ञया
On Kailāsa, by the command of Śaṃkara, Pārvatī formerly said: 'Embrace me, beloved; there is no fault in my knowledge.'
कथं शिवाज्ञा तां देवीं बभूव राधिकापते
How did the command of Śiva become directed to that goddess, O Lord of Rādhikā?
श्वेतद्वीपात्स्वयं विष्णुर्जगाम शंकरालये
Viṣṇu himself went from Śvetadvīpa to the abode of Śaṃkara.
दृष्ट्वा गणेशं मुदितः समुवास सुखासने 4.6.
Seeing Gaṇeśa, delighted, he sat down on a comfortable seat.
किरीटिनं कुंडलिनं पीतांबरधरं वरम्
He was adorned with a crown, earrings, and wore yellow garments, most excellent.
चंदनागुरुकस्तूरीकुंकुमद्रवसंयुतम्
He was anointed with sandalwood, aguru, musk, and saffron essence.
रत्न सिंहासनस्थं च पार्षदैः परिवेष्टितम्
He was seated upon a jeweled throne, surrounded by attendants.
तं दृष्ट्वा पार्वती विष्णुं प्रसन्नवदनेक्षणा
Seeing that Viṣṇu, Parvatī beheld him with a gracious and cheerful gaze.
अतीव सुन्दरं रूपं दर्शंदर्शं पुनःपुनः
His form was exceedingly beautiful, delightful to behold again and again.
परमाद्भुतवेषं च सस्मिता वक्रचक्षुषा
He had a most wondrous appearance, smiling, with sidelong glances.
क्षणं ददर्श पञ्चास्यं शुभ्रवर्णं त्रिलोचनम्
For a moment, she saw the five-faced one, bright in complexion, with three eyes.
क्षणं ददर्श श्यामं तमेकास्यं च द्विलोचनम्
For a moment, she saw that dark-hued one, with a single face and two eyes.
मदंशाश्च त्रयो देवा ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वराः 4.6.
The three gods—Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara—are each portions of the same essence.
दृष्ट्वा तं पार्वती भक्त्या पुलकांचितविग्रहा
Seeing him, Parvatī, filled with devotion, became thrilled in body.
दुर्गांतराभिप्रायं च बुबुधे शंकरः स्वयम्
Śaṃkara himself understood the inner intention of Durgā.
दुर्गां निर्जनमाहूय तामुवाच हरः स्वयम्
Calling Durgā aside in private, Hara himself spoke to her.
अहं ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च ब्रह्मैकं च सनातनम्
I, Brahmā, and Viṣṇu are all the one eternal Brahman.
एका प्रकृतिः सर्वेषां माता त्वं सर्वरूपिणी
You alone are the single Prakṛti, the mother of all, assuming every form.
मम वक्षसि दुर्गा त्वं निबोधाध्यात्मकं सति
O Sati, know that you, Durgā, dwell in my heart as the innermost Self.
सुचिरं तपसा लब्धो नाथस्त्वं जगतां मया
By long austerity, I have obtained you, the Lord of the worlds.
मादृशीं किंकरी नाथ न परित्यक्तुमर्हसि
O Lord, you should not abandon a servant like me.
तव वाक्यं महादेव करिष्याम्येव पालनम् 4.6.
O Mahādeva, I will surely carry out your command and protection.
इत्येवं वचनं श्रुत्वा विरराम महेश्वरः
Hearing these words, Maheshvara ceased.
तत्प्रतिज्ञापालनाय पार्वती जांबवद्गृहे
To keep that promise, Parvati took birth in the house of Jambavan.
