सर्वेश्वरः कालकालो मृत्योर्मृत्युः परात्परः
The Lord of all, the time of time, death of death, the supreme beyond the supreme.
सर्वाभीष्टं च भर्त्तारं प्रदास्यति कृपानिधिः
The treasury of compassion will grant the desired lord of all wishes.
इत्युक्त्वा कालपुरुषो विरराम च शौनक
Having spoken thus, the Personification of Time became silent, O Shaunaka.
ब्राह्मण उवाच कस्तेऽधुना च सन्देहस्तं पृच्छ कन्यके शुभे
The Brahmin said: What doubt do you have now? Ask, O auspicious maiden.
ब्राह्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा हृष्टा मालावती सती
Hearing the Brahmin's words, Malavati, the virtuous one, became delighted.
मालावत्युवाच तत्कारणं च विविधं सर्वं वेदे निरूपितम्
Malavati said: All the various causes are explained in the Vedas.
यतो न सञ्चरेद्व्याधिर्दुर्निवारोऽशुभावहः
From which disease, difficult to restrain and bringing misfortune, does not arise.
यद्यत्पृष्मपृष्टं वा ज्ञातमज्ञातमेव वा
Whatever is asked or inquired, whether known or unknown.
मालावतीवचः श्रुत्वा विप्ररूपी जनार्दनः
Hearing Malavati's words, Janardana, in the form of a Brahmin,
ब्राह्मण उवाच वेदवेदांगबीजस्य बीजं श्रीकृष्णमीश्वरम्
The Brahmin said: The seed of the Veda and its limbs is the seed, the Lord Shri Krishna.
स ईशश्चतुरो वेदान्ससृजे मङ्गलालयान्
He, the Lord, created the four Vedas, the abode of auspiciousness.
ऋग्यजुःसामाथर्वाख्यान्दृष्ट्वा वेदान्प्रजापतिः
Having seen the Vedas named Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva, Prajapati,
कृत्वा तु पञ्चमं वेदं भास्कराय ददौ विभुः 1.16.
Then, having made the fifth Veda, the Lord gave it to Bhaskara.
भास्करश्च स्वशिष्येभ्य आयुर्वेदं स्वसंहिताम्
And Bhaskara gave to his own disciples the Ayurveda, his own compilation.
तेषां नामानि विदुषां तन्त्राणि तत्कृतानि च
The names of those learned ones and the treatises composed by them are known.
धन्वन्तरिर्दिवो दासः काशीराजोऽश्विनीसुतौ
Dhanvantari, servant of heaven; King of Kashi; and the sons of Ashvini.
जाबालो जाजलिः पैलः करथोऽगस्त्य एव च
Jabala, Jajali, Paila, Karatha, and also Agastya—
चिकित्सातत्त्वविज्ञानं नाम तन्त्रं मनोहरम्
The treatise named 'The True Science of Therapy' is delightful.
चिकित्सादर्पणं नाम दिवोदासश्चकार सः
Divodasa composed the treatise called 'The Mirror of Therapy.'
चिकित्सासारतन्त्रं च श्रमघ्नं चाश्विनीसुतौ
The Ashvini twins composed the treatise 'The Essence of Therapy,' which removes fatigue.
चकार सहदेवश्च व्याधिसिन्धुविमर्दनम्
And Sahadeva composed 'The Crusher of the Ocean of Diseases.'
च्यवनो जीवदानं च चकार भगवानृषिः
The venerable sage Cyavana composed 'The Bestower of Life.'
सर्वसारं चन्द्रसुतो जाबालस्तन्त्रसारकम् 1.16.
The son of Chandra composed 'The Essence of All,' and Jabala composed 'The Essence of Treatises.'
पैलो निदानं करथस्तन्त्रं सर्वधरं परम्
Paila composed 'Diagnosis,' and Karatha the supreme treatise 'The Support of All.'
चिकित्साशास्त्रबीजानि त न्त्राण्येतानि षोडश
These sixteen treatises are the seeds of the science of therapy.
मथित्वा ज्ञानमन्त्रेणैवायुर्वेदपयोनिधिम्
Having churned the ocean of Ayurveda with the mantra of knowledge,
एतानि क्रमशो दृष्ट्वा दिव्यां भास्करसंहिताम्
Having seen these in order, the divine Bhaskara Samhita was composed.
व्याधेस्तत्त्वपरिज्ञानं वेदनायाश्च निग्रहः
The true understanding of disease and the control of pain—
आयुर्वेदस्य विज्ञाता चिकित्सासु यथार्थवित्
He who knows Ayurveda and is accurate in therapies is the knower.
जनकः सर्वरोगाणां दुर्वारो दारुणो ज्वरः
The origin of all diseases is the fever that is hard to restrain and dreadful.
