Mahāmāyā, the supreme goddess, is Prakriti herself, endowed with every power. Among her manifestations, Savitri shines as the mother and presiding deity of the Vedas, revered as the goddess who governs all knowledge. Since ancient times, the wise have honored her, for through service and austerity, she bestows all forms of wealth. By her worship and penance, she became celebrated throughout all the worlds. Savitri is the sovereign of all, worthy of reverence, and she attained the Lord of all—Krishna—as her husband. Born from Krishna’s left portion, she presides over his love, radiant with surpassing beauty, good fortune, and honored dignity. Long ago, she performed intense austerities atop the mountain Shataśṛṅga. Her body became emaciated and breathless, yet she retained a delicate beauty, like a crescent of the moon. Seeing her thus, Krishna granted her a boon—an essence rare even among all beings—blessing her with fortune, honor, love, and dignity. Thus, she became the most excellent and revered, praised and worshipped even by the narrator. Having spoken these words, the Lord of the worlds then created that consciousness. The goddesses, who had themselves been worshipped by those who served Savitri, also undertook great austerities. For a thousand divine years, they performed penance on the Himalaya. Sarasvati did austerity on Mount Gandhamadana; Lakshmi performed divine austerities for a hundred ages at Pushkara; Savitri, after penance at Malaya, became worthy of worship by the twice-born. Even the great gods performed austerities: Shankara for a hundred manvantaras; Vishnu, for the same span, became the protector; Shesha, with devotion, for a manvantara; and Vayu, purified by a divine hundred ages of penance. In this way, through Krishna’s own austerity, all the gods were worshipped. Thus, everything has been revealed—both Purana and Agama. Narada then asked: “At the time of dissolution, the natural end of things has been described. It is said that during this dissolution, the earth was not seen. Where did she remain at that time? How did she become blessed, honored, the support of all, and victorious?” Shri Narayana replied: “Manifestation and disappearance occur in all dissolutions. Listen to the origin of the earth, auspicious and inauspicious in every way. Some say she arose from the marrow of Madhu and Kaitabha, who, long ago, addressed Vishnu, pleased by their valor in battle. During their lifetime, the earth became clearly manifest and is known as Medini. Hear the opinion they stated. I will tell you an origin accepted by all: from the great cosmic body, which lay in the waters for a long time, the Lord entered all the pores of its hairs. In each and every pore, the earth remained firmly in the cavities. At the time of creation, she manifested, emerging from those waters.” Thus, the story unfolds, revealing Mahāmāyā’s glory, the power of austerity, the reverence of the gods, and the mysterious origin of the earth.
