सहस्रं तु सहस्राणां कोटीनां पद्ममुच्यते
A thousand times a thousand of ten million is called a padma.
गुणितानि समुद्रं वै प्राहुः संख्याविदो जनाः
Those who know numbers say that when multiplied, it is called a samudra.
कोटीसहस्रप्रयुतं मध्यमित्यभिसंज्ञितम्
A hundred million times a thousand is called the 'middle' unit.
परार्द्धं द्विगुणं चापि परमाहुर्मनीषिणः
Twice that is called 'parārddha', the highest, by the wise.
विज्ञेयमयुतं तस्मान्नियुतं प्रयुतं ततः
From that, 'ayuta' should be known, then 'niyuta', then 'prayuta'.
खर्वं चैव निखर्वं च शङ्कुः पद्मन्तथैव च
'Kharva', 'nikharva', 'shaṅku', and 'padma' likewise.
एवमष्टादशैतानि स्थानानि गणनाविधौ
Thus, these eighteen are the places in the method of calculation.
कल्पसंख्याप्रवृत्तस्य परार्द्धो ब्रह्ममः स्मृतः
For those engaged in counting kalpas, 'parārddha' is remembered as Brahma's measure.
पर एव परार्द्धश्च संख्यातः संख्याया मया
The 'para' and 'parārddha' have been enumerated by me in the reckoning.
परा शक्तिः परो धर्मः पराविद्या परा धृतिः
Supreme is the power, supreme is the virtue, supreme is the knowledge, supreme is the steadfastness.
तस्मात्परतरं भूतं ब्रह्मणो यन्न विद्यते
Therefore, nothing exists beyond what is supreme of Brahma.
संख्यातस्तु परो ब्रह्मा तस्यार्द्धस्य परार्द्धता
In the enumeration, Brahma is beyond; the half of that is called 'parārddha'.
संख्येयं संख्यया दृष्टमपरार्द्धाद्विभाष्यते
This enumeration is seen by calculation and is explained beyond 'parārddha'.
आनन्त्यं सिकता द्येषु हृष्टं चान्यं त्वलक्षणम्
Infinity is like the grains of sand in the sky; another is unmarked.
एवं ज्ञानप्रतिष्ठत्वात्सर्वं ब्रह्मानुपश्यति
Thus, established in knowledge, one perceives all as Brahma.
बाष्पपर्याकुलाक्षास्तु प्रहर्षाद्गद्गदस्वराः
With eyes filled with tears, voices choked with joy.
ब्रह्मलोकस्तु भगवन्यावन्मात्रान्तरे प्रभो
O Lord, Brahma's world is within the measure of a moment, O Master.
क्रोशस्य च परीमाणं श्रोतुमीच्छाम तत्त्वतः
I wish to hear, in truth, the measure of a krosha.
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं यथादृष्टं यथाक्रमम्
He spoke sweet words, as seen and in proper order.
अव्यक्ताद्व्यक्तभागो वै महान्स्थूलो विभाष्यते
From the unmanifest, the manifest portion is indeed called great and gross.
दशभागाधिकं चापि भूतादिपरिमाणकम्
And also, the measure of the elements and so forth is ten parts more.
यदभेद्यतमं लोके विज्ञेयं परमाणुवत्
That which is the most indivisible in the world is to be known as like an atom.
प्रथमं तत्प्रमाणानां परमाणुं प्रचक्षते
First among those measures, the atom is declared.
त्रसरेणुः समाख्यातस्तत्पद्मरज उच्यते
The trasareṇu is named as such; it is said to be the dust of a lotus.
ते ऽप्यष्टौ समवायस्था बालाग्रं तत्स्मृतं बुधैः
Eight of these, when combined, are remembered by the wise as the tip of a hair.
यूकाष्टकं यवप्राहुरङ्गुलं तु यवाष्टकम्
Eight lice are said to make a barley grain, and eight barley grains make a finger's breadth.
रत्निश्चागुलिपर्वाणि विज्ञेयो ह्येकविंशतिः
A ratni is to be known as twenty-one finger-joints.
किष्कुर्द्विरत्निर्विज्ञेयो द्विचत्वारिंशदङ्गुलः
A kiṣkuru is known as two ratnis, and forty finger-breadths.
एतद्गव्यूतिसंख्यायामादानं धनुषः स्मृतम्
In this reckoning of a gavyūti, the measure of a dhanus is established.
धनुषां त्रिशतं नल्वमाहुः संख्याविदो जनाः
Those who know numbers say that three hundred dhanus make a nala.
