महर्ल्लोकेति यत्प्रोक्तं मातरिश्वंस्त्वया विभोः
That which is called Maharloka, O mighty one, has been spoken by you as Mātariśva.
प्रोवाच मधुरं वाक्यं यथा तत्त्वेन तत्त्ववित्
He spoke sweet words, as one who knows the truth, in accordance with reality.
लोकाख्यानि तु यानि स्युर्येषां तिष्ठन्ति मानवाः
The worlds by name are those in which human beings dwell.
भूरादयस्तु सत्यान्ताः सप्त लोकाः कृतास्त्विह
Beginning with Bhū and ending with Satya, seven worlds have indeed been established here.
स्थानानि स्थानिभिः सार्द्धं कृतानि तु निबन्धनम्
Abodes, together with their inhabitants, have been made as their foundation.
स्थानान्येतानि चत्वारि स्मृतान्यावर्णकानि च
These four abodes are remembered, along with the lower ones without distinction.
यानि नैमित्तिकानि स्युस्तिष्ठन्त्याभूतसंप्लवात्
Those that are occasional remain until the dissolution of beings.
एकान्तिकानि तानि स्युस्तिष्ठन्तीहाप्रसंयमात्
Those that are perpetual remain here due to the absence of destruction.
भूर्लोकः प्रथमस्तेषां द्वितीयस्तु भुवः स्मृतः
Of these, Bhūloka is the first; the second is known as Bhuvaḥ.
जनस्तु पञ्चमो लोकस्तपः षष्ठो विभाव्यते
Jana is the fifth world, and Tapas is understood as the sixth.
भूरिति व्याहृतेः पूर्व भूर्लोकश्च ततो ऽभवत्
From the utterance 'Bhūḥ' came Bhūloka thereafter.
तृतीयं स्वरितीत्युक्तो दिवं प्रादुर्बभूव ह
The third, called Svar, then appeared as heaven.
ततो भूः पार्थिवो लोको ह्यन्तरिक्षं भूवः स्मृतम्
After that, Bhū is the earthly world, and Bhuvaḥ is known as the atmosphere.
भूतस्याधिपतिश्चाग्निस्ततो भूतपतिः स्मृतः
Agni is the lord of Bhū, and thus is called the lord of beings.
दिवस्य सूर्यो ऽधिपतिस्तेन सूर्यो दिवस्पतिः
The sun is the lord of heaven, and thus the sun is called the lord of heaven.
विनिवृत्ताधिकारणां देवानां तत्र वै क्षयः
When the authority of the gods ceases, there is their decline there.
तासां स्वायंभुवाद्यानां प्रजानां जननाज्जनः
From the birth of beings beginning with Svāyambhuva, Jana arises.
कल्प एते यदा लोके प्रतिष्ठन्ति तदा तपः
When these cycles are established in the world, then Tapas exists.
तपसा भावितात्मानस्तत्र संतीति वा तपः
Those whose selves are purified by austerity dwell there, or that is called Tapas.
ब्रह्मलोकस्ततः सत्यः सप्तमः स तु भास्वरः
After that is Brahmaloka, Satya, the seventh, which is indeed radiant.
सर्वभूतपिशाचाश्च नागाश्च सह मानुषैः
All beings, spirits, and serpents together with humans,
मरुतो मातरिश्वानो रुद्रा देवास्तथाश्विनौ
The Maruts, Mātariśvan, Rudras, gods, and the Ashvins,
आदित्या ऋभवो विश्वे साध्याश्च पितरस्तथा
The Ādityas, Ṛbhus, Viśvedevas, Sādhyas, and the ancestors,
एते वैमानिका देवास्ताराग्रहनिवासिनः
These celestial gods dwell among the stars and planets,
शुक्राद्याश्चक्षुषान्ताश्च ये व्यतीता भुवं श्रिताः
From Venus onward, up to the realm of vision, those who have passed away and reside in the earth,
इत्येते क्रमशः प्रोक्ता ब्रह्मव्याहारसंभवाः
Thus, these have been described in order, arising from the utterance of Brahma,
तान्सर्वान्सप्तसूर्यास्ते अर्चिभिर्निर्दहन्ति वै
All these are burned by the rays of the seven suns,
भृगुः पुलस्त्यः पुलहः क्रतुरित्येवमादयः
Bhṛgu, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, and others in succession,
निःसत्त्वा निर्ममाश्चैव तत्र ते ह्यूर्द्वरेतसः
Without essence and without possession, there, they are indeed those of upward-flowing seed,
मन्वन्तराणां सर्वेषां सावर्णानां ततः स्मृताः
All the Sāvarṇa Manus of the Manvantaras are remembered thereafter,
