सा युगाख्या सहस्रं तु सर्वाण्येवान्तराणि वै
That which is called a yuga, a thousand, all are indeed intervals.
एतद्ब्राह्ममहर्ज्ञेयं तस्य सख्यां निबोधत
This is the day of Brahma; understand its measure, O friends.
मानुषाक्षिनिमेषास्तु काष्ठा पञ्चदश स्मृताः
Fifteen 'kāṣṭhās' are remembered as the blink of a human eye.
प्रस्था सप्तो दकाश्चैव साधिकाक्तु लवः स्मृतः
Seven 'prasthās' and ten 'dakās', and a little more, are called a 'lava'.
मुहूर्त्तास्तु पुनस्त्रिंशदहोरात्रमिति स्थितिः
Thirty 'muhūrtas' make up a day and night; thus is its duration.
ताश्चैव संख्याया ज्ञेयाश्चन्द्रादित्यगतिर्यथा
These numbers should be known, as is the movement of the moon and sun.
त्रिंशत्कला मुहूर्त्तं तु दशभागं कला स्मृतम्
Thirty kalās make one muhūrta, and a tenth part of a kalā is known as a daśabhāga.
मुहूर्त्ताश्च लवाश्चापि प्रमाणज्ञैः प्रकल्पिताः
Muhūrtas and lavās have also been determined by those who are skilled in measurement.
मागधेनैव मानेन जलप्रस्थो विधीयते
By the Māgadha standard of measurement, a jalaprastha is prescribed.
हेममाषैः कृतच्छिद्रश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरङ्गुलैः
A vessel made with a hole and four māṣas of gold, measuring four aṅgulas, is used.
रवेर्गतिविशेषेण सर्वेष्वेतेषु नित्यशः
According to the particular movement of the sun, all these are always regulated.
तदहर्मानुषं ज्ञेयं नाक्षत्रं तु दशाधिकम्
That day is to be understood as human, while the nakṣatra day is ten times greater.
एतद्दिव्यमहोरात्रमिति शास्त्रविनिश्चयः
This is the divine day and night, as established by the scriptures.
तदा बद्धमिदं ज्ञानं संज्ञया ह्युपलक्षितम्
Thus, this knowledge has been fixed and designated by its proper terminology.
यदहो ब्रह्मणः प्रोक्तं दिव्या कोटी तु सा स्मृता
What is called a day of Brahmā is said to be a crore of divine days.
नवतिं च सहस्राणि तथैवान्यानि यानि तु
And likewise, there are ninety thousand more, as has been stated.
संख्यासंभजनं ज्ञानमपृच्छन्सुतरां तदा
At that time, they earnestly inquired about the knowledge of the reckoning of numbers.
मानेन श्रोतुमिच्छामः संक्षेपार्थपादाक्षरम्
We wish to hear, by means of measurement, the concise meaning, word by word.
संक्षेपाद्दिव्यचक्षुष्ट्वा त्प्रोवाच वचनं प्रभुः
Then, with divine vision, the Lord spoke these words in brief.
तासां संख्याथ वर्षाग्रं ब्राह्मे वक्ष्याम्यहःक्षये
Now I shall declare the number of those years at the end of a day of Brahmā.
द्वात्रिंशच्च तथा कोट्यः संख्याताः संख्यया द्विजैः
And thirty-two crores have been counted by the twice-born, according to calculation.
अशीतिश्च सहस्राणि एष कालः प्लवस्य तु
And there are eighty thousand; this is the duration of the deluge.
महाभूतषु लीयन्त प्रजाः सर्वाश्चतुर्विधाः
All beings of four kinds dissolve into the great elements.
सलिलेनाप्लुते लोके नष्टे स्थावरजङ्गमे
When the world is flooded with water, all that is stationary and moving is destroyed.
निरालोके प्रदग्धे तु नैशेन तमसा वृते
When all was consumed and enveloped by the darkness of night, with no light remaining,
तावदेकार्मवे ज्ञेयं यावदासीदहः प्रभोः
Only a single day of the Lord is to be understood as lasting for that period.
अहोरात्रस्तथैवास्य क्रमेण परिवर्तते
Day and night, in this way, alternate for him in succession.
त्रैलोक्ये यानि सत्त्वानि गतिमन्तिध्रुवाणि च
All beings in the three worlds, both those with movement and those that are fixed,
अतीता वर्तमानाश्च तथैवानागताः प्रजाः
The past, present, and likewise the future generations,
परार्द्धं द्विगुणं चापि परमायुः प्रकीर्त्ततम्
The supreme lifespan is declared to be a parārdha, and even twice that.
