पौलस्त्यस्य च ब्रह्मर्षेः प्रीतिपुत्रस्य धीमतः
And of Paulastya, the Brahmarṣi, the wise son of Prīti.
पौलस्त्या इति विख्याताः स्मृताः स्वायंभुवे ऽन्तरे
They were known as the Paulastyas, remembered in the Svāyambhuva Manvantara.
त्रेताग्निवर्चसः सर्वे येषां कीर्त्तिः प्रतिष्ठिता
All of them possessed the brilliance of the Tretā fire, whose fame is established.
ऋषिः कनकपीठश्च शुभा कन्या च पीवरी
The sage Kanakapīṭha, and the auspicious maiden Pīvarī.
पुत्रं शङ्खपदं नाम कन्यां काम्यां तथैव च
A son named Śaṅkhapada, and likewise a daughter named Kāmyā.
दक्षिणस्यां दिशि रतः काम्या दत्ता प्रियव्रते
Kāmyā, who delighted in the southern direction, was given to Priyavrata.
दश कन्याद्वयं चैव यैः क्षत्रं सम्प्रवर्त्तितम्
Ten and two maidens, by whom the royal order was established.
यशोधरा विजज्ञे वै कामदेवं सुमध्यामा
Yaśodharā gave birth to Kāma, the one of slender waist.
तेषां न भार्या पुत्रो वा सर्वे ते उर्द्धरेतसः
None of them had wife or son; all were of ascetic seed.
अरुणस्याग्रतो यान्ति परिवार्य दिवाकरम्
They go before Aruṇa, surrounding the sun.
स्वसारौ तद्यवीयस्यौ पुण्या सत्यवती चते
His two younger sisters were the virtuous Satyavati and Cate.
ऊर्जायां तु वसिष्ठस्य वासिष्ठाः सप्त जज्ञिरे
From Urja, Vasistha had seven sons known as the Vasisthas.
जननी सा द्युतिमतः प्राणस्य महिषी प्रियाः
She became the mother of Dyutimat, the beloved chief queen of Prana.
रक्षो गर्त्तोर्द्धबा हुश्च सवनः पवनश्च यः
Raksha, Gartta, Urdhabahu, Savana, and Pavana were born from her.
रत्नो वराङ्ग्यजनयन्मार्कण्डेयी यशस्विनी
Ratna, the illustrious Markandeyi, gave birth to Varangi.
गोत्राणि नामभिस्तेषां वासिष्ठानां महात्मनाम्
The lineages of those great-souled Vasisthas are known by their names.
इत्येष ऋषिसर्गस्तु सानुबन्धः प्रकीर्त्तितः
Thus, the creation of the sages along with their descendants has been described.
ब्रह्मणो मानसः पुत्रस्तस्मात्स्वाहा व्यजायत
From Brahma's mind-born son, Svaha was born.
निर्मथ्यः पवमानस्तु वैद्युतः पावकः स्मृतः
Nirmathya, Pavamana, and Vaidyuta are remembered as forms of Agni.
निर्मथ्यः पवमानस्तु शुचिः सौरस्तु यः स्मृतः
Nirmathya, Pavamana, Shuchi, and Saura are also known as forms of Agni.
पवमानात्मजश्चैव कव्यवाहन उच्यते
Kavyavahana is said to be the son of Pavamana.
देवानां हव्यवाहो ऽग्निः पितॄणां कव्यवाहनः
Among the gods, Agni is the carrier of offerings; among the ancestors, Kavyavahana.
एतेषां पुत्रपौत्रास्तु चत्वारिंशन्न वैव तु
Their sons and grandsons are said to number forty.
विश्रुप्तो लौकिको ऽग्निस्तु प्रथमो ब्रह्मणः सुतः
The first son of Brahma is the worldly Agni, known as Vishrupta.
वैश्वानरः सुतस्तस्य वहन् हव्यं समाः शतम्
His son was Vaishvanara, who carried the offerings for a hundred years.
सोथर्वा लौकिको ऽग्निस्तु दर्पहाथर्वणः स्मृतः
Then Atharva, the worldly Agni, is remembered as Darpaha Atharvana.
तस्मात्स लौकिको ऽग्निस्तु दध्यङ्ङाथर्वणो मतः
From him, the worldly Agni known as Dadhyanga Atharvana is regarded.
स ज्ञेयो गार्हपत्यो ऽग्निस्तस्य पुत्रद्वयं स्मृतम्
He is to be known as the Garhapatya fire, and he is said to have two sons.
द्वितीयस्तु सुतः प्रोक्तः शुको ऽग्निर्यः प्रणीयते
The second son is said to be Śuka, who is the fire that is led forth.
शंस्यस्तु षोडश नदीश्चकमे हव्यवाहनः
Śaṃsi is praised; the fire that bears the oblation desired sixteen rivers.
