एवं यो वेत्ति तं देवं तनुभिर्नामभिश्च ह
Whoever knows that god by his forms and names,
इत्येतद्वो मया प्रोक्तं गुह्यं भीमास्य यद्यशः
Thus this secret, the glory of Bhīmāsya, has been declared to you by me.
महादेवस्य देवस्य भृगोस्तु शृणुत प्रजाः
Hear, O descendants of Bhṛgu, of the god Mahādeva.
शुभाशुभप्रदातारौ सर्वप्राणभृतामिह
The two who grant auspicious and inauspicious results to all living beings here,
तयार्ज्येष्ठा तु भगिनी देवी श्रीर्लोकभाविनी
By her was born the eldest sister, the goddess Śrī, who brings forth the worlds.
नारायणात्मजौ तस्यां बलोन्मादौव्यजायताम्
From her, two sons of Nārāyaṇa were born: Bāla and Unmāda.
तस्यान्ये मानसाः पुत्रा आसन् व्योमविचारिणः
Other sons of hers, born from the mind, moved through the sky.
मेरुकल्पे स्मृते भार्ये विधातुर्धातुरेव च
In the Meru epoch, the wives of Vidhātṛ and Dhātṛ are remembered.
प्राणश्चैव मृकण्डश्च ब्रह्मकोशौ सनातनौ
Prāṇa and Mṛkaṇḍa are the two eternal repositories of Brahma.
सुतो वेदशिरास्तस्य धूम्रपत्न्यामजायत
His son, Vedaśiras, was born from his wife Dhūmrā.
मार्कण्डेयाः समाख्याता ऋषयो वेदपारगाः
The Mārkaṇḍeyas are renowned sages, accomplished in the Vedas.
उन्नतश्चद्युतिमतः स्वनवातश्च तावुभौ
Unnata and Dyutimat, Svanavāta—these two as well.
स्वायंभुवेन्तरे ऽतीता मरीचेः शृणुत प्रजाः
Now hear of the descendants of Marīci in the past Svāyaṃbhuva Manvantara.
प्रजापतेः पूर्णमासं कन्याश्चेमा निबोधत
Listen to the daughters of Prajāpati Pūṛṇamāsa as well.
पूर्णमासः सरस्वत्यां पुत्रौ द्वावुदपादयत्
Pūrṇamāsa begot two sons upon Sarasvatī.
विरजस्यात्मजो विद्वान् सुधामा नाम विश्रुतः
The wise Sudhāmā, famed by name, was the son of Viraja.
लोकपालः स धर्मात्मा गौरीपुत्रः प्रतापवान्
He, the guardian of the worlds, righteous in soul, was the mighty son of Gaurī.
पर्वशः पर्वशायां तु जनया मास वै सुतौ
Parvaśa, with Parvaśā, indeed fathered two sons named Māsa.
तयोर्गोत्रकरौ पुत्रौ जातौ संन्यासनिश्चितौ
Their two sons, founders of lineages, were born determined for renunciation.
पुत्रो कन्याश्चतस्रश्च पुण्यास्ता लोकविश्रुताः
A son and four virtuous daughters, renowned in the worlds, were born.
तथैव भरताग्निं च कीर्तिमन्तं च तावुभौ
Likewise, Bharata and Agni, and Kīrtimant—these two as well.
हिरण्यरोमा पर्जन्यो मारीच्यामुदपद्यत
Hiraṇyaromā and Parjanya were born from Mārīcī.
यज्ञे कीर्त्तिमतश्चापि धेनुका वीतकल्मषौ
In the sacrifice, Kīrttimat and Dhenukā, both free from sin.
तयोः पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च अतीता वै सहस्रशः
Their sons and grandsons, indeed, have passed away by the thousands.
कन्यां चैव श्रुतिं नाम माता शङ्खपदस्य सा
And a daughter named Śruti, who was the mother of Śaṅkhapada.
सत्यनेत्रश्च हव्यश्च आपो मूर्त्तिः शनैश्चरः
Satyanetra and Havya, Āpa as a form, and Śanaiścara.
यामदेवैस्सहातीताः पञ्चात्रेयाः प्रकीर्त्तिताः
Along with the sons of Yama, the five Ātreyas are proclaimed.
स्वायंभुवे ऽन्तरे ऽतीताः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः
In the Svāyambhuva Manvantara, hundreds and thousands have passed away.
पूर्वजन्मनि सो ऽगस्त्यः स्मृतः स्वायंभुवे ऽन्तरे
In a previous birth, Agastya was remembered in the Svāyambhuva Manvantara.
स्वमा यवीयसी तेषां सद्वती नाम विश्रुता
Among them, his younger wife was renowned as Sadvatī.
