उशीनरस्य पुत्र्यस्तु पञ्च तासु कुलोद्वहाः
Uśīnara's daughters were also five, exalted among their clans.
नृगायास्तु नृगः पुत्रो नवाया नव एव तु
Nṛga was the son of Nṛgā, and Nava was the son of Navā.
दृषद्वती सुतश्चापि शिबिरौशीनरो द्विजाः
O twice-born, Dṛṣadvatī's son was also Śibi, of the Uśīnara line.
नवस्य नवराष्ट्रं तु कृमेस्तु कृमिला पुरी
Nava's realm was Navarashtra, and Kṛmi's city was Kṛmilā.
शिबेस्तु शिबयः पुत्राश्चत्वारो लोकसंमताः
Śibi had four sons, the Śibayas, esteemed by the world.
तेषां जनपदाः स्फीताः केकया मद्रकास्तथा
Their flourishing peoples were the Kekayas and also the Madrakas.
तितिक्षुरभवद्राजा पूर्वस्यां दिशि विश्रुतः
Titikṣu became a renowned king in the eastern direction.
हेमस्य सुतपा जज्ञे सुतः सुतपसो बलिः
From Hema was born Sutapa, and from Sutapa, his son Bali.
महायोगी स तु बलिर्बद्धो यः स महामनाः
That great yogi, Bali, who was of lofty mind, was bound.
अङ्गं स जनयामास वङ्गं सुह्मं तथैव च
He begot sons named Anga and Vanga, as well as Suhma.
वालेया ब्राह्मणाश्चैव तस्य वंशकराः प्रभोः
The Vāleyas and also the Brāhmaṇas became progenitors of his line, O Lord.
महायोगित्वमायुश्च कल्पस्य परिमाणकम्
He obtained great yogic power and a lifespan equal to a kalpa.
त्रैलोक्यदर्शनं चैव प्राधान्यं प्रसवे तथा
He also gained the vision of the three worlds and preeminence in creation.
चतुरो नियतान्वर्णांस्त्वं वै स्थापयितेति वै
You indeed established the four fixed classes.
कालेन महता विद्वान्स्वं च स्थानमुपागतः
In the course of great time, O wise one, he attained his own place.
पुण्ड्राः कलिङ्गश्च तथा तेषां वंशं निबोधत
Now hear of the lineage of the Puṇḍras and Kaliṅgas.
संभूता दीर्घतमसः सुदेष्णायां महौजसः
They were born from Dīrghatamas, of great energy, through Sudeṣṇā.
ऋषिणा दीर्घतमसा ह्येतत्प्रब्रूहि पृच्छताम्
This, O inquirer, is declared by the sage Dīrghatamas.
भार्या वै ममता नाम बभूवास्य महात्मनः
His wife was named Mamatā, and she belonged to that great soul.
बृहस्पतिर्बृहत्तेजा ममतां सो ऽभ्यपद्यत
Bṛhaspati, of great brilliance, approached Mamatā.
अन्तर्वत्न्यस्मि ते भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्यास्य च भामिनी
She was pregnant by her brother, the elder one, O beautiful lady.
अजस्रं ब्रह्म चाभ्यस्य षडङ्गं वेदमुद्गिरन्
He recited the endless Brahman, uttering the six-limbed Veda.
अस्मिन्नेव यथाकाले यथा वा मन्यसे विभो
At that very time, as you wish, O mighty one,
कामात्मानं महात्मापि नात्मानं सो ऽभ्यधारयत्
Though he was a great soul, overcome by desire, he did not restrain himself.
उत्सृजन्तं तदा रेतो गर्भस्थः सो ऽस्य भाषत
As he was releasing his seed, the one in the womb then spoke to him.
अमोघरेतास्त्वं वापि पूर्वं चाहमिहागतः
You may be one whose seed is not wasted, but I have come here before you.
उशिजस्य सुतं भ्रातुर्गर्भस्थं भगवानृषिः
The blessed sage, while still in the womb, was the son of Ushija’s brother.
मामेवमुक्तवान्मोहात्तमो दीर्घं ग्रवेक्ष्यसि
He spoke to me thus, out of delusion: 'You will see a long darkness in the grave.'
अथौशिजो बृहत्कीर्तिर्बृहस्पतिरिबौजसा
Then Ushija, renowned and mighty, became Bṛhaspati by his strength.
गोधर्मं सौरभेयात्तु वृषभाच्छतवान्प्रभोः
He received the dharma of cows from Saurabheya, the bull, O Lord.
