तस्माददृश्यो भूतानां कालाकाङ्क्षी स तिष्ठति
Therefore, he remains invisible to beings, awaiting the proper time.
तस्मान्निरुत्सुकस्त्वं वै पर्यायं सहसाकुलः
Therefore, you should not be anxious, for the turn will come, though now you are troubled.
ब्रह्मणा प्रतिषिद्धो ऽस्मि भविष्यं जानता प्रभो
I have been restrained by Brahmā, O Lord, who knows what is to come.
दैवतैः सह संरब्धान्सर्वान्वो धारयिष्यतः
You will sustain all those who, together with the gods, become enraged.
ततस्ताभ्यां ययुः सार्द्धं प्रह्लादप्रमुखास्तदा
Then, together with those two, Prahlāda and the others departed at that time.
सहसा शंसमानास्ते जयं काव्येन भाषितम्
Suddenly, as they went, they proclaimed victory in words spoken by Kavi.
अथ देवासुरान्दृष्ट्वा संग्रामे समुपस्थितान्
Then, seeing the gods and asuras assembled for battle,
अजयन्तासुरा देवान्नग्रा देवा अमन्त्रयन्
The asuras defeated the gods, and the gods did not consult together.
तस्माद्यज्ञं समुद्दिश्य कार्यं चात्महितं च यत्
Therefore, one should perform sacrifice and actions that are beneficial to oneself.
अथोपामन्न्रयन्देवाः शण्डामकारै तु तावुभौ
Then the gods, having assembled, persuaded both of them with eunuch-like forms.
यज्ञे चाहूय तौ प्रोक्तौ त्यजन्तामसुरा द्विजौ
In the sacrifice, after summoning them, it was declared that the two Brahmins should abandon the demons.
एवं तत्यजतुस्तौ तु षण्डामकारै तदा सुरान्
Thus, at that time, those two with eunuch-like forms abandoned the gods.
देवासुरान्पराभाव्य शण्डामर्कावुपागमन्
The gods, having defeated the demons, approached the eunuch-like pair.
बाध्यमानास्तदा देवैर्विविशुस्ते रसातलम्
Then, being oppressed by the gods, they entered the netherworld.
ततः प्रभृति शापेन भृगुनैमित्तिकेन च
From that time onward, due to a curse and because of Bhrigu's agency,
कर्तुं धर्मव्यवस्थान मधर्मस्य प्रणाशनम्
the establishment of righteousness and the destruction of unrighteousness was to be carried out.
मनुष्यवध्यांस्तान्सर्वान्ब्रह्मा व्याहरत प्रभुः
The lord Brahmā declared all of them to be fit for killing by humans.
यज्ञं प्रवर्त्तयामास वैन्यो वैवस्वते ऽन्तरे
In the interval of Vainya and Vaivasvata, a sacrifice was initiated.
चतुर्थ्यां तु युगाख्यायामापन्नेषु सुरेष्वथ
Then, when the gods had fallen in the fourth age called Yuga,
द्वितीयो नरसिंहो ऽभूद्रौद्रः सुतपुरस्सरः
The second incarnation, Narasiṃha, fierce and accompanied by his son, appeared.
द्विजो भूत्वा शुभे काले बलिं वैरोचनं जगौ
Becoming a Brahmin at an auspicious time, he approached Bali, the son of Virocana.
दातुमर्हसि मे राजन्विक्रमांस्त्रीनिति प्रभुः
The lord said, 'O king, you ought to grant me three steps.'
वामनं तं च विज्ञाय ततो ऽदान्मुदितः स्वयम्
Recognizing him as Vāmana, Bali joyfully gave them himself.
त्रिभिः क्रमैर्विश्वमिदं जगदाक्रामत प्रभुः
With three strides, the lord traversed this entire universe.
प्रकाशयन्दिशः सर्वाः प्रदिशश्च महायशाः
The illustrious one illuminated all the directions and the intermediate quarters.
आसुरीं श्रियमाहृत्य त्रींल्लोकांश्च जनार्द्दनः
Janārdana, having taken away the demonic prosperity and the three worlds,
नमुचिः शंबरश्चैव प्रह्रादश्चैव विष्णुना
Namuci, Shambara, and Prahlada were indeed slain by Vishnu.
महाभूतानि भूतात्मा सविशेषाणि माधवः
Madhava, the soul of beings, became the great elements along with their distinctions.
तस्य गात्रे जगत्सर्वमात्मानमनुपश्यति
In his body, one perceives the entire universe as his own self.
तद्वै रूपमुपेन्द्रस्य देवादानवमानवाः
That very form of Upendra is beheld by gods, demons, and humans.
