कंसस्य नाममात्रेण पुष्कला लोकसाक्षिणी
By the mere mention of Kaṃsa's name, the abundant world bore witness.
तस्या यश्चाष्टमो गर्भः स ते मृत्युर्भबिष्यति
And the eighth embryo of hers—he will be your death.
निष्कृष्य खड्गं तां कन्यां हन्तुकामो ऽभवत्तदा
Drawing his sword, he then wished to kill that maiden.
उग्रसेनात्मजं कसं सौत्दृदात्प्रणयेन वा
Kaṃsa, son of Ugrasena, whether through affection or resolve,
उपायः परिदृष्टो ऽत्र मया यादवनन्दन
O delight of the Yadus, I have considered a means in this matter.
तमहं ते प्रयच्छामि तत्र कुर्या यथाक्रमम्
I will give that to you; do there as is proper.
सर्वानप्यथ वा गर्भान्पृथङ्नेष्यामि ते वशम्
Or else, I will bring all the embryos separately under your control.
एवमुक्तो ऽनुनीतः स जग्राह वचनं तदा
Thus addressed and appeased, he then accepted that advice.
कंसस्तस्यावधीत्पुत्रान्पापकर्मा वृथामतिः
Kaṃsa, evil-minded and wicked in deed, killed her sons.
नन्दगोपस्तु कस्त्वेष यशोदा य महायशाः
But who is this Nandagopa, and who is Yaśodā, the greatly renowned?
या गर्भं जनयामास या वैनं याभ्यवर्द्धयत्
She who bore him in her womb, she who gave birth to him, and she who raised him—
कश्यपो ब्रह्मणोंऽशश्च पृथिव्या आदितिस्तथा
Kashyapa, a portion of Brahma, the Earth, and likewise Aditi—
अथ कामान्महाबाहुर्देवक्याः संप्रवर्द्धयन्
Then the mighty-armed one, fulfilling the desires of Devaki, grew up.
मोहयन्सर्वभूतानि योगात्मा योगमायया
Bewildering all beings, the self of yoga, by his yogic illusion—
कर्त्तुं धर्मव्यवस्थानमसुराणां प्रणाशनम्
To establish the order of righteousness and to destroy the demons—
सत्राजितः सत्यभामा जांबवत्यपि रोहिणी
Satrajita, Satyabhama, Jambavati, and also Rohini—
चतुर्दश तु ये प्रोक्ता गणास्त्वप्सरसां दिवि
The fourteen groups of celestial nymphs that are spoken of in heaven—
पत्न्यर्थं वासुदेवस्य उत्पन्ना राजवेश्मसु
Were born in royal households for the sake of being wives of Vasudeva.
प्रद्युम्नश्चारुदेष्णश्च सुदेवः शरभस्तथा
Pradyumna, Charudeshna, Sudeva, and also Sharabha—
चारुविद्यश्च रुक्मिण्यां कन्या चारुमती तथा
Charuvidya from Rukmini, and likewise a daughter, Charumati—
जरो ऽधकस्ताम्रचक्रौ सौभरिश्च जरेधरः
Jara, Adhaka, Tamrachakra, Saubhari, and Jaredhara—
भानुः सौभरिका चैव ताम्रपर्णी जरन्धरः
Bhanu, Saubharika, Tamraparni, and Jarandhara—
भद्रश्च भद्रगुप्तश्च भद्रचित्रस्तथैव च
Bhadra, Bhadragupta, and likewise Bhadracitra—
संबोधनी च विख्याता ज्ञेया जांबवतीसुताः
Sambodhani, renowned, is to be known as the daughter of Jambavati.
एते पुत्राः सुदेव्यां च विष्वक्सेनस्य कीर्त्तिताः
These sons of Sudhevi, of Vishvaksena, are recounted.
मित्रबाहुः सुनीथश्च नाग्नजित्या प्रजास्त्विह
Mitrabahu and Sunitha were born here from Nagnajiti.
प्रयुतं तु समाख्यातं वासुदेवस्य ये सुताः
The number of sons of Vasudeva is said to be ten million.
जनार्दनस्य वंशो वः कीर्तितो ऽयं यथातथम्
Thus the lineage of Janardana has been recounted to you as it truly is.
कन्या सा बृहदुक्थस्य शैनेयस्य महात्मनः
That maiden was the daughter of Brihaduktha, the great-souled descendant of Shini.
आनन्दः कनकः श्वेतः कन्या श्वेता तथैव च
Ānanda, Kanaka, Shveta, and likewise the maiden Shvetā.
