कृष्णा सुभद्रेति पुनर्व्याख्याता वृष्णिनन्दिनी
Kṛṣṇā, also called Subhadrā, is further known as the delight of the Vṛṣṇis.
वसुदेवस्य भार्यासु महाभागासु सप्तसु
Among the seven illustrious wives of Vasudeva,
पूर्वाद्याः सहदेवायां शूराद्वै जज्ञिरे सुताः
The eldest sons were born to Sahadevā from Śūra.
आगावहो महात्मा च वृकदेव्या मजायत
The great-souled Āgāvaha was born from Vṛkadevī.
उपासंगं वसुं चापि तनयौ देवरक्षिता
Upāsaṃga and Vasu were the sons of Devarakṣitā.
विजयं रोचनं चैव वर्द्धमानं च देवलम्
Vijaya, Rocana, Vardhamāna, and Devala.
सप्तमी देवकी पुत्रं सुनामानमसूयत
On the seventh occasion, Devakī gave birth to a son of noble name.
श्राद्धदेव्यां पुरोद्याने वने तु विचरन्द्विजाः
In the sacred grove of Śrāddhadevī, the twice-born wandered in the forest.
सुगन्धी वनराजी च शौरेरास्तां परिग्रहौ
The fragrant forest creeper and the wife of Śauri became his consorts.
तयो राजाभवत्पुण्ड्रः कपिलस्तु वनं ययौ
Of these, Puṇḍra became king, and Kapila went to the forest.
जरा नाम निषादो ऽसौ प्रथमः स धनुर्द्धरः
Jarā, named Niṣāda, was the first, and he was a wielder of the bow.
पण्डितानां मतं प्राहुर्देवश्रवसमुद्भवम्
The learned declare that he was born from Devaśravas.
निवृत्तशत्रुं शत्रुघ्नं श्राद्धदेवं महाबलम्
Nivṛttaśatru, Śatrughna, Śrāddhadeva, all possessed great strength.
एकलव्यो महाभागो निषादैः परिवर्द्धितः
Ekalavya, greatly fortunate, was raised among the Niṣādas.
चारुदेष्णं च सांबं च कृतास्त्रौ शस्तलक्षणौ
Cārudeṣṇa and Sāmba, skilled in weapons and marked by excellence.
वृकाय वै त्वपुत्राय वसुदेवः प्रतापवान्
To Vṛka, his own son, Vasudeva, mighty in valor, was given.
सृंजयस्य धनुश्चैव विरजाश्च सुताविमौ
Sṛṃjaya's bow and Virajā, these two were his sons.
जुगुप्समानो भोजत्वं राजर्षित्वमवाप्तवान्
Disdaining the status of Bhoja, he attained the rank of royal sage.
श्रावयेद्ब्राह्मणंवापि स महात्सुखमवाप्नुयात्
Whoever recites this to a Brāhmaṇa attains great happiness.
विहारार्थं मनुष्येषु जज्ञे नारायणः प्रभुः
For the sake of play among men, Lord Nārāyaṇa was born.
चतुर्बाहुस्तु संजज्ञे दिव्यरूपश्रियान्वितः
He was born with four arms, endowed with divine beauty and splendor.
अव्यक्तो व्यक्तलिङ्गश्च स एव भगवान्प्रभुः
He is both unmanifest and manifest in form, that very Lord, the master.
देवो नारायणो भूत्वा हरिरासीत्सनातनः
Becoming the god Nārāyaṇa, Hari existed as the eternal one.
अदितेरपि पुत्रत्वमेत्य यादवनन्दनः
Even as the son of Aditi, he became the delight of the Yādavas.
प्रासादयन्यं च विभुं ह्यदित्याः पुत्रकारणे
The Adityas worshipped the mighty one for the sake of obtaining a son.
ययातिवंशजस्याथ वसुदेवस्य धीमतः
Then, of the wise Vasudeva, descendant of Yayati's line,
सागराः समकंपत चेलुश्च धरणीधराः
The oceans trembled, and the mountains shook.
शिवाश्च प्रववुर्वाताः प्रशान्तमभवद्रजः
Auspicious winds began to blow, and the dust settled into calm.
अभिजिन्नाम नक्षत्रं जयन्ती नाम शर्वरी
The star Abhijit arose, and the night was called Jayanti.
अव्यक्तः शाश्वतः कृष्णो हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः
The unmanifest, eternal Krishna—Hari, Narayana, the Lord—
