स्यमन्तको मार्गणीयस्तस्य प्रभुरहं प्रभो
The Syamantaka must be sought; I am its master, O lord.
स्यमन्तकं महाबाहो सामान्यं वो भविष्यति
O mighty-armed, the Syamantaka will become common property for you all.
शतधन्वा तमक्रूरमवैक्षत्सर्वतो दिशम्
Shatadhanva searched everywhere for Akrura.
शक्तो ऽपि शाठ्याद्धार्दिक्यो नाक्रूरो ऽभ्युपपद्यत
Though capable, Hardikya did not approach Akrura out of deceit.
योजनानां शतं साग्रं हृदया प्रत्यपद्यत
He reached a distance of over a hundred yojanas in his heart.
भोजस्य वडवा दिव्या यया कृष्णमयोधयत्
Bhoja's divine mare, by which Krishna was challenged to battle.
दृष्ट्वा रथस्य तां वृद्धिं शतधन्वा समुद्रवत्
Seeing the increase of the chariot, Shatadhanva became like the ocean.
खमुत्पेतुरथ प्राणाः कृष्णो राममथाब्रवीत्
Then, his life departed into the sky; Krishna spoke to Rama.
पद्भ्यां गत्वा हरिष्यामि मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम्
I will go on foot and seize the Syamantaka jewel.
मिथिलोपवने तं वै जघान परमास्त्रवित्
In the forest near Mithila, he who was skilled in supreme weapons struck him down.
निवृत्तं चाब्र वीत्कृष्णं रत्नं देहीति लाङ्गली
When he had returned, the wielder of the plough said to Krishna, 'Give me the jewel.'
धिक्छब्दपूर्वमसकृत्प्रत्युवाच जनार्द्दनम्
He repeatedly addressed Janardana with the word of reproach preceding his speech.
कृत्यं न मे द्वारकया न त्वया न च वृष्णिभिः
I have no business with Dvaraka, nor with you, nor with the Vrishnis.
सर्वकामैरुपहृतैर्मैथिलेनैव पूजितः
I have been honored by the king of Mithila with all desired offerings.
नानारूपान्क्रतून्सर्वा नाजहार निरर्गलान्
He performed all the unrestricted sacrifices of various kinds.
स्यमन्तककृते प्राज्ञो कान्दिनीजो महामनाः
For the sake of the Syamantaka, the wise son of Kunti, great of mind,
बह्वन्नदक्षिणाः सर्वे सर्वकामप्रदायिनः
All were abundant in food and gifts, bestowing every desired object.
गदाशिक्षां ततो दिव्यां बलभद्रादवाप्तवान्
Then he obtained the divine instruction in mace-fighting from Balabhadra.
आनीतो द्वारकामेव कृष्णेन च महात्मना
He was brought to Dvaraka by the great-souled Krishna.
युद्धे हत्वा तु शत्रुघ्नं सह बन्धुमता बली
In battle, the mighty one slew Shatrughna together with Bandhumat.
भङ्गकारस्य तनयौ विश्रुतौ सुमहाबलौ
The two sons of Bhangakara, renowned and exceedingly strong,
वधे च भङ्गकारस्य कृष्णो न प्रीतिमानभूत्
Krishna was not pleased at the slaying of Bhangakara.
अपयाते ततो ऽक्रूरे नावर्षत्पाकशासनः
When Akrura departed, the lord of rain did not shower.
ततः प्रसादयामासुरक्रूरं कुकुरान्धकाः
Then the Kukuras and Andhakas sought to appease Akrura.
प्रववर्ष सहस्राक्षः कुक्षौ जलनिधेस्ततः
Then the thousand-eyed one caused rain to fall into the ocean's womb.
अक्रूरः प्रददौ श्रीमान्प्रीत्यर्थं मुनिपुङ्गवाः
Akrura, the illustrious one, gave (it) out of affection, O best of sages.
सभामध्ये तदा प्राह तमक्रूरं जनार्द्दनः
Then, in the midst of the assembly, Janardana spoke to Akrura.
तत्प्रयच्छ स्वमानार्ह मयि मानार्यकं कृथाः
Give me that jewel which is worthy of honor; do not act with pride toward me.
सुसंरूढो ऽसकृत्प्राप्तस्तदा कालात्ययो महान्
It had been firmly held and received many times; then a great delay had passed.
प्रददौ तं मणिं बभ्रुरक्लेशेन महामतिः
The wise Babhu gave that jewel without difficulty.
