तं रुदन्तं कुमारं तु मारोदीरिति सो ऽब्रवीत्
To the weeping boy, he said, ‘Do not weep.’
त्वं महादेवनामासि इत्युक्तो विरराम ह
‘You are called Mahadeva,’ he was told, and then he ceased.
प्रोवाच नाम्नामेतेषां स्थानानि प्रदिशेति ह
He spoke, saying, 'Indicate the places of these by name.'
सूर्यो जलं मही वायुर्व ह्निराकाशमेव च
The sun, water, earth, air, fire, and indeed space.
तेषु पूज्यश्च वन्द्यश्च नमस्कार्यश्च यत्नतः
Among these, one should worship, honor, and respectfully bow with care.
यदुक्तं ते मया पूर्वं नाम रुद्रेति वै विभो
What I previously told you, the name 'Rudra,' O mighty one.
इत्युक्ते तस्य यत्तेजश्चक्षुस्त्वासीत्प्रकाशकम्
When this was said, his radiance became the eye, shining forth.
उद्यतमस्तं यन्तं च वर्जयेद्दर्शनेरविम्
One should avoid viewing the sun when it rises or sets.
तस्मात्मूर्यं न वीक्षेत आयुष्कामः शुचिः सदा
Therefore, one who desires long life and is always pure should not gaze at the sun.
उभे संध्ये ह्युपासीना गृणन्तः सामऋग्यजुः
Seated at both twilights, reciting the Sāma, Ṛg, and Yajur Vedas.
सामस्वथापराह्णे तु रुद्रः संविशति क्रमात्
At the afternoon Sāma recitation, Rudra enters in succession.
न रुद्रम्प्रति मेहेत सर्वावस्थं कथं चन
One should never oppose Rudra in any circumstance whatsoever.
ततो ऽप्रवीत्पुनर्ब्रह्मा तं देवं नीललोहितम्
Then Brahmā again addressed that god, blue and red in hue.
एतस्यापो द्वितीया ते तनुर्नाम्ना भवत्विति
Of this, let water be your second form, named thus.
विवेश तत्तदा यस्तु तस्मादापो भवः स्मृतः
He entered that at that time; therefore, he is remembered as 'Bhava of water.'
भवनाद्रावनाच्चैव भूतानामुच्यते भवः
Because of causing existence and moistening, among beings he is called Bhava.
न निष्ठीवेन्नावगाहेन्नैव गच्छेच्च मैथुनम्
One should not spit, bathe, nor engage in intercourse in water.
मैध्यामेध्यास्त्वपामेतास्तनवो मुनिभिः स्मृताः
Pure and impure forms of water are remembered by sages as his bodies.
अपां योनिः समुद्रस्तु तस्मात्तं कामयन्ति ताः
The ocean is the womb of waters; therefore, they desire him.
तस्मादपो न रुन्धीत समुद्रं कामयन्ति ताः
Therefore, one should not obstruct water; they desire the ocean.
ततो ऽब्रवीत्पुनर्ब्रह्मा कुमारं नीललोहितम्
Then Brahmā again spoke to the boy Nīlalohita.
तस्य भूमिस्तृतीयस्य तनुर्नाम्ना भवत्त्वियम्
The earth is the third form of yours, known by name as this one.
विवेश तत्तदा भूमिं यस्मात्सा शर्व उच्यते
He then entered that earth; therefore, he is called Śarva.
न च्छायायां तथा मार्गे स्वच्छायायां न मेहयेत्
One should not relieve oneself in the shadow, nor on the path, nor in one's own shadow.
एवं यो वर्तते भूमौ शर्वस्तं न हिनस्ति वै
Whoever behaves thus on earth, Śarva does not harm him.
ईशानेति चतुर्थ ते नाम प्रोक्तं मयेह यत्
The fourth name of yours, which I have spoken here, is Īśāna.
इत्युक्ते यच्छरीरस्थं पञ्चधा प्राणसंज्ञितम्
When this was said, that which is within the body became fivefold, known as prāṇa.
तस्मान्नैनं परिवदेत्प्रवान्तं वायुमीश्वरम्
Therefore, one should not revile the wind, the lord who moves about.
एवं युक्तं महेशानो नैव देवो हिनस्ति तम्
Thus, when one acts accordingly, Maheśāna, the great lord, does not harm that person.
नाम यद्वै पशुपतिरित्युक्तं पञ्चमं मया
The fifth name, which I have spoken, is Paśupati.
