संयोज्या त्मानमेवं स पर्णाशजलमस्पृशत्
Thus joining himself in this way, he touched the water of the Parṇāśā.
कल्याणत्वान्नरपतेस्तस्य सा निम्नगोत्तमा
Because of the king’s excellence, that river became the best among streams.
नाभिगच्छामि तां नारीं यस्यामेवंविधः सुतः
I will not approach that woman whose son is of such a kind.
तस्मादस्य स्वयं चाहं भवाम्यद्य सहव्रता
Therefore, today I myself will become her companion in the vow.
अथ भूत्वा कुमारी तु सा चिन्तापरमेव च
Then, having become a maiden, she was filled with deep thought.
तस्यामाधत्त गर्भे स तेजस्विनमुदा रधीः
He placed in her womb a radiant and noble son.
पुत्रं सर्वगुणोपेतं बभ्रुं देवावृधत्तदा
She bore a son endowed with all virtues, named Babhru, whom Devāvṛdha raised.
गुणान्देवावृधस्यापि कीर्तयन्तो महात्मनः
They praised the virtues of Devāvṛdha, that great-souled one.
बभ्रुः श्रेष्ठो मनुष्याणां देवैर्देवावृथः समः
Babhru was the best among men, equal to the gods, as was Devāvṛdha.
येमृतत्वमनुप्राप्ता बब्रोर्देवावृधादपि
Those who attained immortality were born from Babhru and even from Devāvṛdha.
कीर्त्तिमांश्च महाभोजः सात्त्वतानां महारथः
Kīrtimān and Mahābhoja, the great chariot-warrior among the Sāttvatas.
गान्धारी चैव माद्री च धृष्टैर्भार्ये बभूवतुः
Gāndhārī and Mādrī became the wives of Dhṛṣṭa.
साद्री युधाजितं पुत्रं ततो मीढ्वांसमेव च
Sādrī bore a son Yudhājit, and then also Mīḍhvāṃsa.
अनमित्रसुतो निघ्नो निघ्नस्य द्वौ बभूवतुः
Anamitra’s son was Nighna, and Nighna had two sons.
तस्य सत्राजितः सूर्यः सखा प्राणसमो ऽभवत्
For Satrājit, the Sun became a friend, as dear as life itself.
तोयं कूलात्समुद्धर्तुमुपस्थातुं ययौरविम्
He went to the Sun in order to bring forth water from the riverbank.
सुस्पष्टमूर्त्तिर्भगवांस्तेजोमण्डलवान्विभुः
The Blessed Lord appeared with a clearly discernible form, radiant and resplendent.
यथैव व्योम्नि पश्यामि त्वामहं ज्योतिषां पते
Just as I see you in the sky, O Lord of lights, so do I now behold you.
को विशेषो विवस्वंस्ते सख्येनोपगतस्य वै
What difference is there, O shining one, when you have approached as a friend?
स्वकण्ठादवमुच्याथ बबन्ध नृपतेस्तदा
Then, removing it from his own neck, the king tied it at that time.
प्रीतिमानथ तं दृष्ट्वा मुहूर्त्तं कृतवान्कथाम्
Seeing him, pleased, he conversed with him for a moment.
प्रोवाचाग्निसवर्णं त्वां येन लोकः प्रपश्यति
He spoke: 'I give you this, shining like fire, by which the world beholds you.'
स्यमं तकं नाममणिं दत्तवांस्तस्य भास्करः
The Sun gave him the jewel named Syamantaka.
विस्मापयित्वाथ ततः पुरीमन्तःपुरं ययौ
Then, astonishing all, he entered the inner city.
ददौ भ्रात्रे नरपतिः प्रेम्णा सत्राजिदुत्तमम्
The king lovingly gave the excellent Syamantaka to his brother.
कामवर्षी च पर्जन्यो न च व्याधिभयं तथा
The rain-god showered as desired, and there was no fear of disease.
गोविन्दो न च तं लेभे शक्तो ऽपि न जहार च
Govinda did not obtain it, nor did he seize it, though able.
स्यमन्तककृते सिंहाद्वधं प्राप सुदारुणम्
Because of the Syamantaka, he met a terrible death at the hands of a lion.
आदाय च मणिं दिव्यं स्वबिलं प्रविवेश ह
And taking the divine jewel, he entered his own den.
मणिं गृध्नोस्तु मन्वानास्तमेव विशशङ्किरे
Thinking the vulture had the jewel, they suspected him.
