अर्जुनं च महावीर्यो रामः प्रहरतां वरः
And Arjuna was struck by Rāma, the most valiant among warriors.
तपस्वी ब्राह्मणश्चैव वधिष्यति महाबलः
The ascetic brāhmaṇa, mighty in strength, will indeed kill him.
राज्ञा तेन वरश्चैव स्वयमेव वृतः पुरा
By that king, a boon was also formerly chosen by himself.
कृतास्त्रा बलिनः शूरा धर्मात्मानो यशस्विनः
Skilled in weapons, strong, heroic, righteous, and renowned.
जयध्वजो वंशकर्त्ता अवन्तिषु विशांपतिः
Jayadhvaja, creator of the lineage, lord of the people in Avanti.
तस्य पुत्रशतं त्वेवं तालजङ्घा इतिश्रुतम्
His hundred sons were known as the Tālavaṅghas.
वीतिहोत्राश्च संजाता भोजाश्चावन्तयस्तथा
The Vītihotras were born, as well as the Bhojas and the Avantis.
वीतिहोत्रसुतश्चापि अनन्तो नाम पार्थिवः
And the son of Vītihotra was a king named Ananta.
अनष्ट द्रव्यता चैव तस्य राज्ञो बभूव ह
That king indeed possessed inexhaustible wealth.
न तस्य वित्तनाशः स्यान्नष्टं प्रतिलभेच्च सः
For him, there was no loss of riches; whatever was lost, he regained.
वर्द्धन्ते विभवाश्शश्वद्धर्मश्चास्य विवर्द्धते
His prosperity always increased, and his righteousness grew as well.
यथा यष्टा यथा दाता तथा स्वर्गे महीपते
As he was a sacrificer and a giver, so too, O king, is he in heaven.
कार्त्तवीर्येण विक्रम्य तन्नः प्रब्रूहि पृच्छताम्
Tell us, having been overpowered by Kārtavīrya, how that happened, for we ask.
कथं सरक्षिता भूत्वा नाशयेत तपोवनम्
How, though well protected, could he destroy the forest of ascetics?
भजमानो भजिर्द्दिव्यो वृष्णिर्देवावृधो ऽन्धकः
Bhajamāna, Bhajir, the divine Vṛṣṇi, Devāvṛdha, and Andhaka.
तेषां हि सर्गाश्चत्वारः शृणुध्वं विस्तरेण वै
Of them, there are indeed four lineages; listen to their details.
सृंज यस्य सुते द्वे तु बाह्यके ते उदावहत्
Sṛṃja had two sons, both of whom he gave away to others.
निम्लोचिः किङ्कणश्चैव धृष्टिः पर पुरञ्जयः
Nimloci, Kiṅkaṇa, Dhṛṣṭi, Para, and Purañjaya—
अयुताजित्सहस्राजिच्छताजिदिति नामतः
Ayutājit, Sahasrājit, and Śatājit—these were their names.
पुत्रः सर्वगुणोपेतो मम भूयादिति स्म ह
May I have a son endowed with all virtues—so he wished.
संयोज्या त्मानमेवं स पर्णाशजलमस्पृशत्
Thus joining himself in this way, he touched the water of the Parṇāśā.
कल्याणत्वान्नरपतेस्तस्य सा निम्नगोत्तमा
Because of the king’s excellence, that river became the best among streams.
नाभिगच्छामि तां नारीं यस्यामेवंविधः सुतः
I will not approach that woman whose son is of such a kind.
तस्मादस्य स्वयं चाहं भवाम्यद्य सहव्रता
Therefore, today I myself will become her companion in the vow.
अथ भूत्वा कुमारी तु सा चिन्तापरमेव च
Then, having become a maiden, she was filled with deep thought.
तस्यामाधत्त गर्भे स तेजस्विनमुदा रधीः
He placed in her womb a radiant and noble son.
पुत्रं सर्वगुणोपेतं बभ्रुं देवावृधत्तदा
She bore a son endowed with all virtues, named Babhru, whom Devāvṛdha raised.
गुणान्देवावृधस्यापि कीर्तयन्तो महात्मनः
They praised the virtues of Devāvṛdha, that great-souled one.
बभ्रुः श्रेष्ठो मनुष्याणां देवैर्देवावृथः समः
Babhru was the best among men, equal to the gods, as was Devāvṛdha.
येमृतत्वमनुप्राप्ता बब्रोर्देवावृधादपि
Those who attained immortality were born from Babhru and even from Devāvṛdha.
