कृतानि विधिना राज्ञा श्रूयते मुनिसत्तमाः
The deeds performed by the king, O best of sages, are heard of according to law.
सर्वे काञ्चनवेदीकाः सर्वे यूपैश्च काञ्चनैः
All the altars were of gold, all the sacrificial posts were also of gold.
गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च नित्यमेवोपशोभिताः
They were always adorned by Gandharvas and Apsarases.
चरितं तस्य राजर्षेर्महिमानं निरीक्ष्य च
Having observed the conduct and greatness of that royal sage.
यज्ञैर्दानैस्तपोभिश्च विक्रमेण श्रुतेन च
By sacrifices, gifts, austerities, valor, and learning.
रथी राजा सानुचरो योगाच्चैवानुदृश्यते
The king, riding in a chariot with his retinue, is perceived through yoga.
प्रभावेण महाराज्ञः प्रजा धर्मेण रक्षितः
By the power of the great king, the subjects were protected by righteousness.
स सर्वरत्नभाक्स म्राट् चक्रवर्ती बभूव ह
He became a universal emperor, enjoying all gems.
स एव वृष्ट्या पर्जन्यो योगित्वादर्जुनो ऽभवत्
He himself, through yoga, became Arjuna, the rain-giver.
भाति रश्मिसहस्रेण शारदेनैव भास्करः
The sun shines with a thousand rays, just as in autumn.
कर्कोटकसभां जित्वा पुरीं तत्र न्यवेशयत्
Having conquered the assembly of Karkotaka, he established his city there.
क्रीडन्नेव सुखोद्विग्नः प्रावृट्कालं चकार ह
While playing, though distressed in happiness, he brought about the rainy season.
ऊर्मिमुक्तार्त्तसन्नादा शङ्किताभ्येति नर्मदा
The Narmada, alarmed by the roar of the waves released, approaches.
चकारोद्वृत्तवेलं तमकाले मारुतोद्धतम्
At that time, driven by the wind, she made her banks rise high.
भवन्ति लीना निश्चेष्टाः पातालस्था महासुराः
The great asuras dwelling in the netherworld become submerged and motionless.
पतिताविद्धफेनौघमावर्त्तक्षिप्तदुस्सहम्
Fallen, struck by masses of foam, and violently tossed by whirlpools, she became unbearable.
देवासुरपरिक्षिप्तं क्षीरोदमिव सागरम्
Surrounded by gods and asuras, she was like the ocean of milk.
सहसा विद्रुता भीता भीमं दृष्ट्वा नृपोत्तमम्
Suddenly, terrified upon seeing the mighty king Bhima, they fled.
सायाह्ने कदलीखञ्च निवातेस्तमिता इव
In the late afternoon, they were stilled as if subdued by the wind, like banana groves.
लङ्केशं मोहयित्वा तु सबलं रावणं बलात्
Then, having deluded Ravana, the lord of Lanka, along with his army, by force—
ततो गत्वा पुलस्त्यस्तमर्जुनं च प्रसाधयत्
After that, Pulastya went and adorned that Arjuna.
तस्य बाहुसहस्रस्य बभूव ज्यातलस्वनः
The twang of the bowstring arose from his thousand arms.
अहो मृधे महावीर्यो भार्गवस्तस्य यो ऽच्छिनत्
Ah, in battle, the mighty Bhargava, who cut them off, was truly powerful.
तृषितेन कदाचित्स भिक्षितश्चित्रभानुना
Once, tormented by thirst, he was begged by Citrabhanu.
पुराणि घोषान्ग्रामांश्च पत्तनानि च सर्वशः
All the ancient villages, towns, and cities—
स तस्य पुरुषेन्द्रस्य प्रतापेन महायशाः
He, renowned, by the splendor of that lord among men—
स शून्यमाश्रमं सर्वं वरुणस्यात्मजस्य वै
He saw the hermitage of Varuna's son entirely deserted.
यं लेभे वरुणः पुत्रं पुरा भास्वन्तमुत्तमम्
Whom Varuna, long ago, had obtained as a radiant and excellent son.
तत्रापवस्तदा क्रोधादर्जुनं शप्तवान्विभुः
There, then, out of anger, the mighty one cursed Arjuna.
तस्मात्ते दुष्करं कर्म कृतमन्यो हनिष्यति
Therefore, for you, a difficult deed has been done; another will slay you.
