भृगुतुङ्गे तपस्तप्त्वा तत्रैव च महायशाः
Having performed austerity at Bhṛgutuṅga, there indeed was the great and renowned one.
तस्य वंशास्तु पञ्चैते पुण्या देवर्षिसत्कृताः
His lineages are these five, virtuous and honored by the divine sages.
धन्यः प्रजावा नायुष्मान्कीर्त्तिमांश्च भवेन्नरः
Blessed, possessing offspring, long-lived, and renowned does a man become.
ययातेश्चारितं सर्वं पठञ्छृण्वन्द्विजोत्तमाः
All the deeds of Yayāti, when recited and heard, O best of twice-born, (bring merit).
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे अष्टषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the sixty-eighth chapter, the third section of the Upoddhāta, in the middle part, spoken by Vāyu, of the glorious Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च गदतो मे निबोधत
Now listen to me as I recount in detail and in order.
सहस्रजिदथ श्रेष्ठः क्रोष्टुर्नीलोञ्जिको लघुः
Sahasrajit, then the eminent one; Kroṣṭu, Nīloñjika, and Laghu.
शतजित्तनयाः ख्यातस्त्रयः परमधार्मिकाः
Three sons of Śatajita are renowned, supremely righteous.
हैहयस्य तु दायादो धर्मनेत्र इति श्रुतः
The heir of Haihaya is known as Dharmanetra.
संज्ञेयस्य तु दायादो महिष्मान्नाम पार्थिवः
The heir of Saṃjñeya is the king named Mahiṣmān.
वाराणस्यधिपो राजा कथितः पूर्व एव हि
The king, lord of Vārāṇasī, has already been mentioned before.
दुर्मदस्यसुतो धीमान्कनको नाम विश्रुतः
Durmada's wise son, named Kanaka, is renowned.
कृतवीर्यः कृताग्निश्च कृतवर्मा तथैव च
Kṛtavīrya, Kṛtāgni, and likewise Kṛtavarmā.
जज्ञे बाहुसहस्रेण सप्तद्वीपेश्वरो नृपः
A king was born with a thousand arms, lord of the seven islands.
दत्तमाराधयामास कार्त्तवीर्यो ऽत्रिसंभवम्
Kārttavīrya, born of Atri, worshipped Dattātreya.
पूर्वं बाहुसहस्रं तु स वव्रे प्रथमं वरम्
First, he chose the boon of a thousand arms.
धर्मेण पृथिवीं जित्वा धर्मेणैवानुपालनम्
By righteousness he conquered the earth, and by righteousness he governed it.
संग्रामे युध्यमानस्य वधः स्यात्प्रधने मम
In battle, let my death occur only at the forefront.
सप्तोदधिपरिक्षिप्ता क्षत्रेण विधिना जिता
The land encircled by the seven oceans was conquered by the kṣatriya according to law.
योगो योगेश्वरस्येव प्रादुर्भवति मायया
Yoga arises through the power of illusion, just as it does for the lord of yoga.
कृतानि विधिना राज्ञा श्रूयते मुनिसत्तमाः
The deeds performed by the king, O best of sages, are heard of according to law.
सर्वे काञ्चनवेदीकाः सर्वे यूपैश्च काञ्चनैः
All the altars were of gold, all the sacrificial posts were also of gold.
गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च नित्यमेवोपशोभिताः
They were always adorned by Gandharvas and Apsarases.
चरितं तस्य राजर्षेर्महिमानं निरीक्ष्य च
Having observed the conduct and greatness of that royal sage.
यज्ञैर्दानैस्तपोभिश्च विक्रमेण श्रुतेन च
By sacrifices, gifts, austerities, valor, and learning.
रथी राजा सानुचरो योगाच्चैवानुदृश्यते
The king, riding in a chariot with his retinue, is perceived through yoga.
प्रभावेण महाराज्ञः प्रजा धर्मेण रक्षितः
By the power of the great king, the subjects were protected by righteousness.
स सर्वरत्नभाक्स म्राट् चक्रवर्ती बभूव ह
He became a universal emperor, enjoying all gems.
स एव वृष्ट्या पर्जन्यो योगित्वादर्जुनो ऽभवत्
He himself, through yoga, became Arjuna, the rain-giver.
भाति रश्मिसहस्रेण शारदेनैव भास्करः
The sun shines with a thousand rays, just as in autumn.
