पूरो प्रीतो ऽस्मि भद्रं ते गृहाण त्वं स्वयौवनम्
"Pūru, I am pleased. Blessings to you! Take back your own youth."
प्रतिपेदे जरां राजा ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः
The king Yayāti, son of Nahusha, accepted back old age.
अभिषेक्तुकामं च नृपं पूरुं पुत्रं कनीयसम्
Desiring to anoint as king his youngest son Pūru,
कथं शुक्रस्य नप्तारं देवयान्याः सुतं प्रभो
"How could the grandson of Śukra, the son of Devayānī, O lord,
यदुर्ज्येष्ठस्तव सुतो जातस्तमनुदतुर्वसुः
Yadu, your eldest son, was born; but Turvasu did not accept him.
सुतः संबोधयामस्त्वां धर्मं समनुपालय
"Son, we instruct you: uphold righteousness."
ब्राह्मणप्रमुखा वर्णाः सर्वे शृण्वन्तु मे वचः
Let all the classes, with the Brahmins at their head, listen to my words.
मातापित्रोर्वचनकृद्वीरः पुत्रः प्रशस्यते
A son who acts according to the words of his mother and father is praised as a hero.
प्रतिकूलः पितुर्यश्च न स पुत्रः सतांमतः
But one who opposes his father is not regarded as a son by the virtuous.
यदुनाहमवज्ञातस्तथा तुर्वसुनापि च
I was disrespected by Yadu, and likewise by Turvasu.
पूरुणा तु कृतं वाक्यं मानितश्च विशेषतः
But Puru fulfilled my command and honored me especially.
सर्वे कामा मम कृताः पूरुणा पुण्यकारिणा
All my desires were accomplished by Puru, the doer of good deeds.
पुत्रो यस्त्वानुवर्त्तेत स राजा तु महामते
A son who follows his father, O wise one, is indeed fit to be king.
यः पुत्रो गुणसंपन्नो मातापित्रोर्हितः सदा
That son who is endowed with virtues and always acts for the welfare of his mother and father—
अर्हे ऽस्य पूरू राज्यस्य यः प्रियः प्रियकृत्तव
He is worthy of the kingdom, O Purus, who is dear and does what is pleasing.
पौरजान पदैस्तुष्टैरित्युक्ते नाहुषस्तदा
When the citizens were satisfied with these words, Nahusha then spoke thus.
दिशि दक्षिणपूर्वस्यां तुर्वसुं तु न्यवेशयत्
In the southeastern direction, he settled Turvasu.
प्रतीच्यामुत्तरस्यां च द्रुह्युं चानुं च तावुभौ
In the northwestern direction, he settled both Druhyu and Anu.
व्यभजत्पञ्चधा राजा पुत्रेभ्यो नाहुषस्तदा
Then King Nahusha divided the realm into five parts among his sons.
यथाप्रदेशं धर्मज्ञैर्धर्मेण प्रतिपान्यते
Each region was governed according to righteousness by those who knew dharma.
पुत्रसंक्रामितश्रीस्तु प्रीतिमा नभवन्नृपः
The king, whose prosperity was transferred to his sons, became joyful.
प्रीतिमानभवद्राजा भारमावेश्य बन्धुषु
The king became happy, having entrusted the burden to his relatives.
याभिः प्रत्याहरेत्कामात्कूर्मौंऽगानीव सर्वशः
By which one may withdraw from desires, as a tortoise draws in its limbs completely.
हविषा कृष्णवर्त्मेव भूय एवाभिवर्द्धते
Just as the black path grows again with offerings, so does he flourish anew.
नालमेकस्य तत्सर्वमिति पश्यन्न मुह्यति
Seeing that all this is not sufficient for one alone, he does not become deluded.
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा ब्रह्म संपद्यते तदा
By action, by mind, and by speech, one attains Brahman at that time.
यदा नेच्छति न द्वेष्टि ब्रह्म संपद्यते तदा
When one neither desires nor hates, then one attains Brahman.
यैषा प्राणान्तिको रोगस्तां तृष्णां त्यजतः सुखम्
This thirst is the disease that ends with life; abandoning it brings happiness.
जीविताशा धनाशा च जीर्यतो ऽपि न जीर्यति
The longing for life and for wealth does not decay even as the body decays.
कृष्णाक्षयसुखस्यैतत्कलां नर्हन्ति षोडशीम्
Even sixteen parts do not equal the happiness of Krishna's inexhaustible bliss.
