वलीसंततगात्रश्च निराशो दुर्बलाकृतिः
With a body marked by deep wrinkles, hopeless, and of weak appearance,
सहोपवीतिभिश्चैव तां जरां नाभिकामये
Even together with those who wear the sacred thread, I do not desire that old age.
प्रतिगृह्णन्तु धर्मज्ञ पुत्रमन्यं वृणीष्व वै
'Let those who know righteousness accept it; choose another son.'
उवाच वदतां श्रेष्टो ज्येष्ठं तं गर्हयन्सुतम्
The best among speakers spoke, reproaching that eldest son.
मामनादृत्य दुर्बुद्धे यदहं तव देशिकः
'O foolish one, disregarding me, though I am your teacher—'
यस्त्वं मे त्दृदयाज्जातो वयः स्वं न प्रयच्छसि
'You, who were born from my heart, do not give me your youth.'
तुर्वसो प्रतिपद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह
'Let Turvasu accept the sin together with old age.'
जरायां बहवो दोषाः पानभोजन कारिताः
There are many faults in old age, caused by drinking and eating.
यस्त्वं मे त्दृदयाज्जातो वयः स्वं न प्रयच्छसि
'You, who were born from my heart, do not give me your youth.'
संकीर्णेषु च धर्मेण प्रतिलोमनरेषु च
Among those of mixed castes and among men of contrary lineage, through unrighteousness—
वासस्ते पाप म्लेच्छेषु भविष्यति न संशयः
Your dwelling will be among sinful foreigners, without doubt.
एवं तु तुर्वसुंशप्त्वा ययातिः सुतमात्मनः
Thus, having cursed Turvasu, Yayati addressed his own son.
द्रुह्यो त्वं प्रतिपद्यस्व वर्णरूपविनाशिनीम्
But you, Druhyu, accept a form that destroys caste and appearance.
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे ते प्रतिदास्यामि यौवनम्
When a thousand years are complete, I will return your youth to you.
न सुखं चास्य भवति न जरां तेन कामये
He will have no happiness, nor do I desire that old age for him.
यस्त्वं मे हृदयाज्जातो वयः स्वं न प्रयच्छसि
You, who are born from my heart, do not give me your own youth.
नौप्लवोत्तरसंचारस्तव नित्यं भविष्यति
You will never have the ability to cross by boat.
अनो त्वं प्रतिपाद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह
Anu, you must accept sin together with old age.
न जुहोति स काले ऽग्निं तां जरां नाभिकामये
He does not offer fire at the proper time; I do not desire that old age.
यस्त्वं मे हृदयाज्जातो वयः स्वं न प्रयच्छसि
You, who are born from my heart, do not give me your own youth.
प्रजा च यौवनं प्राप्ता विनशिष्यत्यनो तव
Your offspring, though attaining youth, will perish, O Anu.
पूरो त्वं प्रतिपद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह
Puru, you must accept sin together with old age.
काव्यस्योशनसः शापान्न च तृप्तो ऽस्मियौवने
Because of the curse of Kavi Usanas, I am not satisfied with youth.
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे ते प्रतिदास्यामि यौवनम्
When a thousand years are complete, I will return your youth to you.
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच पुत्रः पितरमञ्जसा
Thus addressed, the son plainly replied to his father.
प्रतिपत्स्ये च ते राजन्पाप्मानं जरया सह
I will accept, O King, the sin together with old age from you.
जरयाहं प्रतिच्छन्नो वयोरूपधरस्तव
Covered by old age, I will bear your age and form.
पूरो प्रीतो ऽस्मि भद्रं ते प्रीतश्चेदं ददामि ते
Puru, I am pleased; may good befall you. Since you are pleased, I give this to you.
पूरोरनुमतो राजा ययातिः स्वजरां ततः
