प्रयतिष्यामि देवेन्द्र त्वद्धितार्थं महाद्युते
I shall strive, O Indra, illustrious one, for your benefit.
तथा शक्र गमिष्यामि मा भूत्ते विक्लवं मनः
So, O Śakra, I will go; let your mind not be troubled.
तेषां च बुद्धिसंमोहमकरोद्बुद्धिसत्तमः
And the best among the wise caused confusion in their understanding.
ब्रह्मद्विषश्च संबृत्ता हतवीर्यपराक्रमाः
Those who became haters of Brahman were deprived of strength and valor.
हत्वा रजिसुतान्सर्वान्कामक्रोधपरायणान्
Having slain all the sons of the king, who were devoted to desire and anger,
शृणुयाच्छ्रावयेद्वापि न स दौरात्म्यमाप्नुयात्
Whoever hears or causes this to be heard does not incur misfortune.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे धन्वन्तरिसंभवादिवर्णनं नाम सप्तषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the sixty-seventh chapter, named 'The Account of the Birth of Dhanvantari and Others,' in the third section, in the middle part, as spoken by Vāyu, of the glorious Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
किंवीर्याश्च महात्मानो जाता मरुतकन्यया
What was the valor of those great souls born from the daughter of Marut?
मासिमासि महातेजाः षष्टिसंवत्सरान्नृप
Month by month, O king, for sixty years, those of great splendor—
अक्षय्यान्नं ददुः प्रीताः सर्वकामपरिच्छदम्
Gave inexhaustible food, delighted, with all desired enjoyments.
कोटिशो दीय मानं च सूर्यस्योदयनादपि
Their measure of giving was in crores, even from the rising of the sun.
तस्माज्जाता महासत्त्वा धर्मज्ञा मोक्षदर्शिनः
From them were born beings of great strength, knowers of dharma, seers of liberation.
यतिधर्ममवाप्येह ब्रह्मभूयाय ते गताः
Having attained the discipline of ascetics here, they went to the state of Brahman.
क्षत्रधर्मसुतो जातः प्रतिपक्षो महातपाः
Born as the son of the kṣatriya dharma was Pratipakṣa, of great austerity.
सृंजयस्य जयः पुत्रो विजयस्तस्य जज्ञिवान्
Jaya's son was Vijaya, who was born to Sṛṃjaya.
इर्यश्वस्य सुतो राजा सहदेवः प्रतापवान्
The valiant king Sahadeva was the son of Iryaśva.
अहीनस्य चयत्सेनस्तस्य पुत्रो ऽथ संकृतिः
From Ahīna came Cayatsena, and his son was Saṃkṛti.
इत्येते क्षत्रधर्माणो नहुषस्य निबोधत
Thus, these are the kṣatriyas of the lineage of Nahuṣa; listen.
यतिर्ययातिः संयातिरायतिर्वियतिः कृतिः
Yati, Yayāti, Saṃyāti, Āyati, Viyati, and Kṛti—
काकुत्स्थकन्यां गां नाम लेभे पत्नीं यतिस्तदा
At that time, Yati took as his wife Gā, the daughter of Kākutstha.
तेषां मध्ये तु पञ्चानां ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः
Among those five, Yayāti became the lord of the earth.
शर्मिष्ठामासुरीं चैव तनयां वृषपर्वणः
He also took Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, who was of Asura birth.
द्रुह्युं चानुं च पूरुं च शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी
Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, bore Druhyu, Anu, and Pūru.
रथं तस्मै ददौ शक्रः प्रीतः परमभास्वरम्
To him, Indra, pleased, gave a most radiant chariot.
युक्तं मनोजवैरश्वैर्येन कन्यां समुद्वहत्
It was yoked with horses swift as the mind, by which he carried away the maiden.
ययातिर्युधि दुर्द्धर्षो देवदानवमानवैः
Yayāti, invincible in battle, was unconquered by gods, Dānavas, and men.
यावत्सुदेशप्रभवः कौरवो जनमेजयः
As far as Sudeśa, Janamejaya of the Kaurava line was born.
जगाम सरथो नाशं शापाद्गार्ग्यस्य धीमतः
He, with his chariot, met destruction because of the curse of the wise Gārgya.
दुर्बुद्धिर्हिंसया मास लोहगन्धी नराधिपः
That king, of wicked mind and violent deeds, bore the smell of iron.
पौरजानपदैस्त्यक्तो न लेभे शर्म कर्हिचित्
Abandoned by his citizens and countrymen, he never found happiness.
