नाहं देवि गमिष्यामि त्वन्यत्रेदं विहाय वै
O goddess, I will not go elsewhere, abandoning this place.
तस्मात्तदविमुक्तं हि प्रोक्तं देवेन वै स्वयम्
Therefore, that place is indeed called Avimukta, as declared by the god himself.
यस्मिन्वसेद्भवो देवः सर्वदेवनमस्कृतः
In which resides Lord Bhava, revered by all the gods.
अन्तर्द्धानं कलौ याति तत्पुरं तु महात्मनः
In the Kali age, that city of the great soul becomes hidden from sight.
एवं वाराणसी शप्ता निवेशं पुनरागता
Thus Varanasi, having been cursed, returned again to habitation.
हत्वा निवेशयामास दिवोदासो नराधिपः
Having slain, King Divodasa established his residence there.
भद्रसेनस्य पुत्रस्तु दुर्मदो नाम नामतः
Bhadrasena’s son was named Durmada, by name.
दिवोदासाद्दृषद्वत्यां वीरो जज्ञे प्रतर्द्दनः
From Divodasa, in Drishadvati, was born the valiant Pratardana.
वैरस्यान्त महाराज तदा तेन विधित्सता
O great king, at that time, with the intent to end the enmity, by him—
वत्सपुत्रो ह्यलर्कस्तु सन्नतिस्तस्य चात्मजः
Vatsaputra was Alarka, and Sannati was his son.
षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि षष्टिवर्षशतानि च
For sixty thousand and sixty hundred years—
लोपामुद्राप्रसादेन परमायुरवाप्तवान्
By the grace of Lopamudra, he obtained the highest lifespan.
रम्यामावासयामास पुरीं वाराणसीं नृपः
The king made the beautiful city of Varanasi his abode.
सुनीथस्य तु दायादः क्षैमाख्यो नाम धार्मिकः
The heir of Sunitha was the righteous one named Kshaima.
सुकेतुतनयश्चापि धर्मकेतुरिति श्रुतः
And the son of Suketu was known as Dharmaketu.
सत्यकेतुसुतश्चापि विभुर्नाम प्रजेश्वरः
And the son of Satyaketu was Vibhu, lord of the people.
सुकुमारस्य पुत्रस्तु धृष्टकेतुः सुधार्मिकः
The son of Sukumara was Dhṛṣṭaketu, exceedingly righteous.
वेणुहोत्रसुतश्चापि गार्ग्यो वै नाम विश्रुतः
And the son of Venuhotra was the renowned sage named Gargya.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रियाश्चैव तयोः पुत्राः सुधार्मिकाः
The Brāhmaṇas and the Kṣatriyas, and likewise their sons, were of excellent virtue.
इत्येते काश्यपाः प्रोक्ता रजेरपि निबोधत
Thus these descendants of Kaśyapa have been described; now hear also of those of Raji.
राजेयमिति विख्यातं क्षत्र सिंद्रभयावहम्
This royal line, renowned as 'Raji’s,' struck terror into the hosts of Kṣatriyas.
देवाश्चैवासुराश्चैव पितामहमथाब्रुवन्
The gods and the asuras then spoke to the Grandfather (Brahmā).
ब्रूहि नः सर्वलोकेश श्रोतुमिच्छामहे वयम्
Speak to us, Lord of all worlds; we wish to hear.
योत्स्यते ते विजष्यन्ते त्रींल्लोकान्नात्र संशयः
Whoever fights for you will conquer the three worlds—of this there is no doubt.
यतो धृतिस्ततो धर्मो यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः
Where there is steadfastness, there is righteousness; where there is righteousness, there is victory.
अभ्ययुर्जयमिच्छन्तः स्तुवन्तो राजसत्तमम्
Desiring victory, they approached and praised the best of kings.
ऊचुरस्मज्जयाय त्वं गृहाम वरकार्मुकम्
They said, 'For our victory, you must take up the excellent bow.'
इन्द्रो भवामि धर्मात्मा ततो योत्स्ये रणाजिरे
'I shall become Indra, righteous in soul; then I will fight on the battlefield.'
अस्मिन्तु समये राजंस्तिष्ठेथा देवनोदिते
'At this moment, O king, remain as declared by the gods.'
भविष्यसींद्रो जित्वेति देवैरपि निमन्त्रितः
Invited even by the gods, he was told, 'You will become Indra after conquering.'
