अयातयामान् सृजतं रुद्रमेतान्सुरोत्तमान्
Rudra created those excellent gods who had not yet come into being.
न स्रष्टव्यात्मन स्तल्या प्रजा नैवाधिका तथा
One should not create beings who are unstable, nor those who are excessive.
नारभन्ते हि कर्माणि प्रजा विगतमृत्यवः
Indeed, those beings free from death do not undertake actions.
प्रजाः स्रक्ष्यामि भद्रं ते स्थितो ऽहं त्वं सृज प्रभो
I will create beings; blessings to you. I remain; you create, O Lord.
सहस्रं हि सहस्राणामात्मनो मम निःसृताः
A thousand times a thousand have emerged from myself.
पृथिव्यामन्तरिक्षे च रुद्राण्यस्ताः परिश्रुताः
Those Rudras are renowned on earth and in the atmosphere.
यज्ञभाजो भविष्यन्ति सर्वे देवगणैः सह
They will partake in sacrifices together with all the hosts of gods.
तैः सार्द्धमिज्यमानास्ते स्थास्यन्तीहायुगक्षयात्
Worshipped together with them, they will remain here until the end of the age.
प्रत्युवाच तथा भीमं त्दृष्यमाणः प्रजापतिः
Then the lord of creatures replied to Bhīma, who was thus seen.
ब्रह्मणा समनु ज्ञाते ततः सर्वमभूत्किल
When Brahmā had fully understood, then indeed everything came to be.
ऊर्ध्वरेताः स्थितः स्थाणुर्यावदाभूतसंप्लवम्
He stood firm, with upward-flowing energy, until the dissolution occurred.
ज्ञानं तपश्च सत्यं च ह्यैश्वर्यं धर्म एव च
Knowledge, austerity, truth, sovereignty, and indeed righteousness.
सर्वान्देवानृषींश्चैव समेतानसुरैः सह
All the gods and sages, gathered together with the asuras.
अत्येति देवा नैश्वर्याद्वलेन च महासुरान्
He surpasses the gods in sovereignty and the great asuras in strength.
प्रजामनु द्यामां सृष्ट्वा सर्गादुपरराम ह
Having created the beings and the sky, he ceased from creation.
महादेवस्य रुद्रस्य साधकैरृषिभिः सह
Of Mahadeva, the Rudra, together with the accomplished sages—
विस्तरेण प्रवक्ष्यामि नामानि तनुभिः सह
I shall declare in detail the names along with the forms.
कल्पेष्वन्येष्वतीतेषु ह्यस्मिन्कल्पे तु ताञ्शृणु
In other past kalpas, and in this kalpa—listen to them.
प्रादुरा सीत्ततोङ्के ऽस्य कुमारो नीललोहितः
Then from his limb appeared the boy, dark-red and blue.
दृष्ट्वा रुदन्तं सहसा कुमारं नीललोहितम्
Seeing the boy, dark-red and blue, suddenly weeping—
सो ऽब्रवीद्देहि मे नाम प्रथमं त्वं पितामह
He said, 'Give me a first name, O Grandfather.'
किं रोदिषि कुमारेति ब्रह्मा तं प्रत्यभाषत
‘Why do you weep, O boy?’ Brahma addressed him.
भवस्त्वं देवनाम्नासि इत्युक्तः सो ऽरुदत्पुनः
‘You are called Bhava among the gods,’ he was told, but he wept again.
तृतीयं देहि मे नाम इत्युक्तः सो ऽब्रवीत्पुनः
‘Give me a third name,’ he said again.
किं रोदिषीति तं ब्रह्मा रुदन्तं प्रत्युवाच ह
‘Why do you weep?’ Brahma spoke to him as he wept.
ईशानो देवनाम्नासि इत्युक्तः सो ऽरुदत्पुनः
‘You are called Ishana among the gods,’ he was told, but he wept again.
पञ्चमं नाम देहीति प्रत्युवाच स्वयंभुवम्
‘Give me a fifth name,’ he replied to the self-born one.
किं रोदिषीति तं ब्रह्मा रुदन्तं पुनरब्रवीत्
‘Why do you weep?’ Brahma again spoke to him as he wept.
भीमस्त्वं देव नाम्नासि इत्युक्तः सो ऽरुदत्पुनः
‘You are called Bhima among the gods,’ he was told, but he wept again.
सप्तमं देहि मे नाम इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाच ह
‘Give me a seventh name,’ he said, and was addressed.
