For such a person, engaged in righteousness but violent and wicked—
The gift made with impure action does not endure for the wicked.
He who sacrifices and gives without fixing his mind on desires—
By giving, one attains enjoyments; by truth, one goes to heaven.
But truth is superior to austerity; therefore, knowledge is remembered as the highest by the wise.
Viśvāmitra, the king; Māndhātṛ; Saṃkṛti; Kapi—
Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, Ajāmīḍha, and Bhārgavyoma likewise—
Rathāntara, Śaunaka, and the kings beginning with Viṣṇuvṛddha—
All these royal sages attained great perfection.
Now, listen as I declare the lineage of the great-souled Āyu.
Thus ends the sixty-sixth chapter, named 'The Account of the Descendants of Amāvasu,' in the Bhārgava narrative, the third section, in the middle part, spoken by Vāyu, of the glorious Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
From Svarbhānu, in the line of Prabhā, these kings were born.
Raṃbha, Rajin, and Anena, renowned in the three worlds.
The three heirs of Sunahotra were supremely righteous.
The son of Gṛtsamada was Śunaka, from whom Śaunaka was born.
From this lineage, brahmins arose, distinguished by various deeds.
Śaunaka and Ṛṣṭiṣeṇa, brahmins accompanied by kṣatriyas,
And Dhanva, who was steadfast in long austerities, and then the learned Dhanvantari.
Then those sages again addressed the Sūta with these words:
We wish to know this; tell it to us, O subduer of foes.
He was born at the edge of the ocean, when the nectar was being churned in ancient times.
Seeing him, whose purpose was instantly accomplished, standing before Viṣṇu,
The Lotus-born spoke to Viṣṇu: 'O Lord, he is your son.'
Thus addressed, seeing that it was true, the Lord spoke accordingly.
In the Vedas, and as prescribed by the great sages, the sacrificial rite is established.
O god, you are a sūta by birth; your mantra is not, O Lord.
There you shall attain perfection endowed with powers such as aṇimā.
And with four mantras, with ghee and cow-products, the twice-born will worship you.
This matter is destined to happen; it was previously seen by the Lotus-born.
Therefore, granting him a boon, Viṣṇu then disappeared.
