रेणुकायां कमल्यां तु तपोधृतिसमाधिना
In Reṇukā, in Kamalā, through austerity, steadfastness, and meditation,
सर्वविद्यान्तगं श्रेष्ठं धनुर्वेदस्य पारगम्
He attained the highest, ultimate knowledge, mastery of the science of archery.
और्वस्यैवमृचीकस्य सत्यवत्यां महामनाः
Thus, of Aurva and Ṛcīka, in Satyavatī, the great-minded one,
मध्यमश्च शुनःशेफः शुनः पुच्छः कनिष्ठकः
The middle son was Śunaḥśepha, Śunaḥpuccha was the youngest.
जज्ञे भृगुप्रसादेन कौशिकान्वयवर्द्धनः
Born by the grace of Bhṛgu, he increased the lineage of Kauśika.
हरिश्चन्द्रस्य यज्ञे तु पशुत्वे नियतः स वै
In the sacrifice of Hariścandra, he was appointed as the sacrificial animal.
देवैर्दत्तः स वै यस्माद्देवरातस्ततो ऽभवत्
Because he was given by the gods, he became known as Devarāta.
मधुच्छन्दादयश्चैव कृतदेवौ ध्रुवाष्टकौ
Madhucchanda and others, Kṛtadeva, Dhruva, and Aṣṭaka,
तेषाङ्गोत्राणि बहुधा कौशिकानां महात्मनाम्
Their lineages are many, the great-souled Kauśikas.
उदुंबराश्च वातड्यास्तलकायनचान्द्रवाः
Uduṃbaras, Vātaḍyas, Talakāyanas, and Cāndravās,
बभ्रवः पणिनस्छैव ध्यानजप्यास्तथैव च
Babhravas, Paṇinas, those devoted to meditation and recitation as well,
देवला यामदूताश्च शालङ्कायनबाष्कलाः
Devalas, Yāmadūtas, Śālaṅkāyanas, and Bāṣkalas,
ऋष्यन्तरविवाह्यास्ते बहबः कौशिकाः स्मृताः
Those Kauśikas who intermarried with other sages are remembered as many.
विश्वामित्रस्य पुत्राणां शुनःशेफो ऽग्रजः स्मृतः
Among the sons of Viśvāmitra, Śunaḥśepha is regarded as the eldest.
अष्टकस्य सुतो लौहिः प्रोक्तो जह्नुगणो मया
Lauhi is said to be the son of Aṣṭaka, and the Jahnu clan by me.
किंलक्षणेन धर्मेण तपसेह श्रुतेन वा
By what mark, by what righteousness, by what austerity or learning,
येनयेनाभिधानेन ब्राह्मण्यं क्षत्रिया गताः
By whatever name, the Kṣatriyas attained the status of Brāhmaṇas.
एवमुक्तस्ततो वाक्यमब्रवीदिदमर्थवत्
Thus addressed, he spoke these meaningful words.
धर्माभिकाङ्क्षी यजते न धर्मफलमश्नुते
One who performs sacrifice desiring righteousness does not obtain the fruit of righteousness.
रागमोहान्वितो ह्यन्ते पावनार्थं ददाति यः
He who, filled with attachment and delusion, gives at the end for the sake of purification—
तस्य धर्मप्रवृत्तस्य हिंसकस्य दुरात्मनः
For such a person, engaged in righteousness but violent and wicked—
संक्लिष्टं कर्मणा दानं न तिष्ठति दुरात्मनः
The gift made with impure action does not endure for the wicked.
कामाननभि संधाय यजते च ददाति च
He who sacrifices and gives without fixing his mind on desires—
दानेन भोगानाप्नोति स्वर्गं सत्येन गच्छति
By giving, one attains enjoyments; by truth, one goes to heaven.
सत्यं तु तपसः श्रेयस्तस्माज्ज्ञानं गुरु स्मृतम्
But truth is superior to austerity; therefore, knowledge is remembered as the highest by the wise.
विश्वामित्रो नरपतिर्मान्धाता संकृतिः कपिः
Viśvāmitra, the king; Māndhātṛ; Saṃkṛti; Kapi—
आर्ष्टिषेणो ऽजमीढश्च भार्गव्योमस्तथैव च
Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, Ajāmīḍha, and Bhārgavyoma likewise—
रथान्तरः शौनकश्च विष्णुवृद्धादयो नृपाः
Rathāntara, Śaunaka, and the kings beginning with Viṣṇuvṛddha—
एते राजर्षयः सर्वे सिद्धिं तु महतीं गताः
All these royal sages attained great perfection.
अत ज्ञर्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि आयोर्वंशं महात्मनः
Now, listen as I declare the lineage of the great-souled Āyu.
