स हि शिष्यो महातेजाः पितुः पूर्वं बृहस्पतेः
He was indeed the illustrious disciple of his father, Bṛhaspati.
पार्ष्मिग्राहो ऽभवद्देवः प्रगृह्याजगवं धनुः
The god seized his bow, made of the horn of a goat, and stood ready.
उद्दिश्य देवानुत्सृष्टं येनैषां नाशितं यशः
Aiming at the gods, he released it, by which their fame was destroyed.
देवानां दानवानां च लोकक्षयकरं महत्
It brought about great destruction for both gods and demons.
ब्रह्माणं शरणं जग्मुरादिदेवं पितामहम्
The gods went for refuge to Brahmā, the primeval god, the grandsire.
ददावाङ्गिरसे तारां स्वयमेत्य पितामहः
Then the grandsire himself returned Tārā to Angiras.
गर्भमुत्सृज सद्यस्त्वं विप्रः प्राह बृहस्पतिः
"Immediately cast off the embryo," said Bṛhaspati, the sage.
अथो तारासृजद्गर्भं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम्
Then Tārā released the embryo, blazing like fire.
ततः संशयमापन्नस्तारामकथयन्सुराः
Then, the gods, filled with doubt, recounted the story of Tārā.
ह्रीयमाणा यदा देवान्नाह सा साध्वसाधु वा
When the gods were embarrassed, she did not say whether it was right or wrong.
तं निवार्य तदाब्रह्मा तारां पप्रच्छ संशयम्
Then Brahmā restrained them and questioned Tārā about the doubt.
सा प्राञ्जलिरुवाचेदं ब्रह्माणं वरदं प्रभुम्
She, with joined palms, spoke these words to Brahmā, the gracious lord.
ततः सुतमुपाघ्राय सोमो राजा प्रजापतिः
Then King Soma, lord of creatures, smelled his son.
प्रतिघस्रं च गगने समभ्युत्तिष्ठते बुधः
Budha, shining in the sky, rose up with great brilliance.
तस्य पुत्रो महातेजा बभूवैलः पुरूरवाः
His son, the mighty and radiant Purūravas, was born.
प्रसह्य धर्षितस्तत्र विवशो राजयक्ष्मणा
There, he was forcibly afflicted, helpless, by the royal consumption.
जगाम शरणायाथ पितरं सो ऽत्रिमेव तु
Then he went for refuge to his father, Atri.
स राजयक्ष्मणा मुक्तः श्रीया जजवाल सर्वशः
Freed from the royal consumption, he shone forth everywhere with splendor.
वंशं तस्य द्विजश्रेष्ठा कीर्त्यमानं निबोधत
O best of twice-born, listen to the account of his lineage as it is praised.
सौम्यस्य चन्म श्रुत्वैवं सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Hearing thus the birth of Saumya, one is freed from all sins.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे सोमसौम्ययोर्जन्मकथनं नाम पञ्चषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the sixty-fifth chapter, entitled 'The Account of the Birth of Soma and Saumya,' in the third section, Upoddhāta, of the middle part of the glorious Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa, as spoken by Vāyu.
तेजस्वी दानशीलश्च यज्वा विपुलदक्षिणः
He was radiant, generous, a giver, a performer of sacrifices with abundant gifts.
आहर्त्ता जाग्निहोत्रस्य यज्ञानां च महीपतिः
He was the sacrificer, the performer of Agnihotra and other sacrifices, and lord of the earth.
अतीव त्रिषु लोकेषु रूपेणाप्रतिमो ऽभवत्
In all three worlds, there was none to match him in beauty.
उर्वशी वरयामास हित्वा मानं यशस्विनी
Urvaśī, renowned, chose him, setting aside her pride.
सप्त षट्सप्त चाष्टौ च दश चाष्टौ च वीर्यवान्
He, full of vigor, had seven, six, seven, eight, ten, and eight sons.
अलकायां विशालायां नन्दने च वनोत्तमे
In Alakā, the vast city, and in Nandana, the most excellent forest,
उत्तरांश्च कुरून्प्राप्य कलापग्राममेव च
having reached the northern Kurus and also the village of Kalāpa,
उर्वश्या महितो राजा रेमे परमया मुदा
the king, greatly honored by Urvaśī, delighted in supreme joy.
उत्सृज्य तं च संप्राप्ता तन्नो ब्रूहि च दुष्कृतम्
But having left him, she departed; tell us, then, what wrong was done.
