ददौ प्राचेतसो दक्षो नक्षत्राणीति या विदुः
Daksha, the son of Prachetas, gave what is known as the constellations.
समारेभे राजसूयं सहस्रशतदक्षिणम्
He commenced a Rājasūya sacrifice, giving a hundred thousand gifts.
सदस्यस्तत्र भगवान्हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः
There, the venerable Lord Hari Nārāyaṇa was present as a sadasya.
सनत्कुमारप्रमुखैराद्यैर्ब्रह्मर्षिभिर्वृतः
He was surrounded by the foremost Brahmarṣis, led by Sanatkumāra.
तेभ्यो ब्रह्मर्षिमुख्येभ्यः सदस्येभ्यश्च वै द्विजाः
To those eminent Brahmarṣis and the sadasyas, O twice-born ones,
कीर्त्तिर्धृतिश्च लक्ष्मीश्च नव देव्यः सिषेविरे
Fame, Fortitude, and Prosperity, the nine goddesses, attended upon them.
अतिरेजे हि राजेन्द्रो दशधा भासयन्दिशः
Indeed, the king outshone all, illuminating the directions tenfold.
विबभ्राम मतिर्विप्रा विनयादनयावृता
His mind wandered, O sages, enveloped by humility and its opposite.
जहार सहसा सर्वानवमत्याङ्गिरःसुतान्
He suddenly took away all the sons of Angiras, treating them with disrespect.
नैव व्यसर्जयत्तारां तस्मा अङ्गिरसे तदा
At that time, he did not return Tārā to Angiras.
स हि शिष्यो महातेजाः पितुः पूर्वं बृहस्पतेः
He was indeed the illustrious disciple of his father, Bṛhaspati.
पार्ष्मिग्राहो ऽभवद्देवः प्रगृह्याजगवं धनुः
The god seized his bow, made of the horn of a goat, and stood ready.
उद्दिश्य देवानुत्सृष्टं येनैषां नाशितं यशः
Aiming at the gods, he released it, by which their fame was destroyed.
देवानां दानवानां च लोकक्षयकरं महत्
It brought about great destruction for both gods and demons.
ब्रह्माणं शरणं जग्मुरादिदेवं पितामहम्
The gods went for refuge to Brahmā, the primeval god, the grandsire.
ददावाङ्गिरसे तारां स्वयमेत्य पितामहः
Then the grandsire himself returned Tārā to Angiras.
गर्भमुत्सृज सद्यस्त्वं विप्रः प्राह बृहस्पतिः
"Immediately cast off the embryo," said Bṛhaspati, the sage.
अथो तारासृजद्गर्भं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम्
Then Tārā released the embryo, blazing like fire.
ततः संशयमापन्नस्तारामकथयन्सुराः
Then, the gods, filled with doubt, recounted the story of Tārā.
ह्रीयमाणा यदा देवान्नाह सा साध्वसाधु वा
When the gods were embarrassed, she did not say whether it was right or wrong.
तं निवार्य तदाब्रह्मा तारां पप्रच्छ संशयम्
Then Brahmā restrained them and questioned Tārā about the doubt.
सा प्राञ्जलिरुवाचेदं ब्रह्माणं वरदं प्रभुम्
She, with joined palms, spoke these words to Brahmā, the gracious lord.
ततः सुतमुपाघ्राय सोमो राजा प्रजापतिः
Then King Soma, lord of creatures, smelled his son.
प्रतिघस्रं च गगने समभ्युत्तिष्ठते बुधः
Budha, shining in the sky, rose up with great brilliance.
तस्य पुत्रो महातेजा बभूवैलः पुरूरवाः
His son, the mighty and radiant Purūravas, was born.
प्रसह्य धर्षितस्तत्र विवशो राजयक्ष्मणा
There, he was forcibly afflicted, helpless, by the royal consumption.
जगाम शरणायाथ पितरं सो ऽत्रिमेव तु
Then he went for refuge to his father, Atri.
स राजयक्ष्मणा मुक्तः श्रीया जजवाल सर्वशः
Freed from the royal consumption, he shone forth everywhere with splendor.
वंशं तस्य द्विजश्रेष्ठा कीर्त्यमानं निबोधत
O best of twice-born, listen to the account of his lineage as it is praised.
सौम्यस्य चन्म श्रुत्वैवं सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Hearing thus the birth of Saumya, one is freed from all sins.
