कथं सीता समुत्पन्न कृष्यमाण यशस्विनी
How was Sītā, the renowned one, born while being ploughed?
अग्निक्षेत्रे कृष्यमाणे अश्वमेधे महात्मनः
While the field of fire was being ploughed during the great horse sacrifice.
सीरध्वजानुजातस्तु भानुमान्नाम मैथिलः
Born as the younger brother of Sīradhvaja, Bhānumān was the king of Mithila.
तस्य भानुमतः पुत्रः प्रद्युम्नश्च पतापवान्
Pradyumna, powerful, was the son of Bhānumān.
ऊर्जवहात्सनद्वाजः शकुनिस्तस्य चात्मजः
From Ūrjavaha came Sanadvāja, and his son was Śakuni.
सुतोपस्तस्य दायादः सुश्रुतस्तस्य चात्मजः
Sutopas was his heir, and Suśruta was Sutopas's son.
विजयस्य क्रतुः पुत्र- क्रतोश्च सुनयः स्मतः
Vijaya's son was Kratu, and Kratu's son was Sunaya, it is said.
धृतेस्तु बहुलाश्वो ऽभूद्बहुलाश्वसुतः कृतिः
From Dhṛti came Bahulāśva, and Bahulāśva's son was Kṛti.
इत्येते मैथिलाः प्रोक्ताः सोमस्यापि निबोधत
Thus these Maithilas have been recounted; now hear of Soma's lineage.
एति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीये उपोद्धातपादे निमिवंशानुकीर्तनं नाम चतुःषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa, spoken by Vāyu, in the middle section, third part, in the Upoddhāta section, is the sixty-fourth chapter named 'The Recitation of the Lineage of Nimi.'
तत्रात्रिः सर्वलोकानां तस्थौ स्वेनौजसा वृतः
There, Atri stood among all worlds, surrounded by his own power.
काष्ठकुड्यशिलाभूत ऊर्द्ध्वबाहुर्महाद्युतिः
With arms raised, radiant, made of wood, walls, and stone.
त्रीणि वर्षसहस्राणि दिव्यानीति हि नः श्रुतम्
Three thousand divine years, indeed, is what we have heard.
सोमत्वं तनुरापेदे महाबुद्धिः स वै द्विजः
He, of great intellect, assumed the form of Soma, that twice-born one.
नेत्राभ्या मस्रवत्सोमो दशधा द्योतयन् दिशः
From his eyes Soma flowed, shining in ten directions.
समेत्य धारयामासुर्न च ताः समशक्नुवन्
They gathered and tried to hold it, but were unable to do so.
पपात भासयंल्लोकाञ्छीतांशुः सर्वभावनः
He fell, illuminating the worlds, the cool-rayed, the nourisher of all beings.
ततः सहाभिः शीतांशुर्निपपात वसुंधराम्
Then, along with his companions, the cool-rayed one descended to the earth.
रथमारोपयामास लोकानां हितकाम्यया
He mounted a chariot, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
युक्ते वाजिसहस्रेण रथे ऽध्यास्तेति नःश्रुतम्
It is heard by us that he sat upon a chariot yoked with a thousand steeds.
तुष्टुवुर्ब्रह्मणः पुत्रा मानसाः सप्त विश्रुताः
The seven renowned mind-born sons of Brahma praised him.
ऋग्भिर्यजुर्भिर्बहुभिरथर्वाङ्गिरसैरपि
With many hymns from the Rig, Yajur, and Atharva-Aṅgiras traditions.
आप्यायमानं लोकांस्त्रीन्भावयामास सर्वशः
He nourished the three worlds completely, causing them to flourish.
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वो ऽतियशाश्चकाराभिप्रदक्षिणम्
He made seven times three circuits, exceedingly glorious, around them.
ओषध्यस्ताः समुद्भूतास्तेजसा खं ज्वलत्युत
The herbs that arose shone in the sky with his radiance.
पोष्टा हि भगवान्सोमो जगतो हि द्विजोत्तमाः
Indeed, the blessed Soma is the nourisher of the world, O best of twice-born.
तवस्तेपे महाभागः समानां नवतीर्दश
That greatly fortunate one performed austerity for ninety days among them.
विभुस्तासां मुदा सोमः प्रख्यातःस्वेन कर्मणा
Soma, the all-pervading, became renowned among them by his own actions, with joy.
बीजौषधीनां विप्राणामपां च द्विजसत्तमाः
He is the seed of herbs, of the twice-born, and of waters, O best of twice-born.
लोकान्वै भावयामास तेजस्वी तपतां वरः
He, radiant and foremost among those who perform austerity, caused the worlds to flourish.
