आसीदहीनगुर्नाम देवानीकात्मजः प्रभुः
There was a lord named Ahīnaga, son of Devānīka.
दलस्तस्यात्मजश्चापि तस्माज्जज्ञे बलो नृपः
His son was Dala, and from him was born King Bala.
वज्रनाभः सुतस्तस्य शङ्खणस्तस्य चात्मजः
His son was Vajranābha, and Śaṅkhaṇa was his son.
व्युषिताश्वसुतश्चापि राजा विश्वसहः किल
And the son of Vyuṣitāśva was the king Viśvasaha, indeed.
पौष्यञ्जेश्च स वै शिष्यः स्मृतः प्राच्येषु सामसु
And Pauṣyañji is remembered as his disciple among the eastern Sāmas.
तस्मादधिगतो योगो याज्ञवल्क्येन धीमता
From him, the wise Yājñavalkya obtained the knowledge of yoga.
सुदर्शनस्तस्य सुतो ह्यग्निवर्मः सुदर्शनात्
Sudarshana's son was Agnivarma, and from Sudarshana,
मरुस्तु योगमास्थाय कलापग्राममास्थितः
Maru, having taken up yoga, resided in the village of Kalapa.
प्रभुसुतो मरोः पुत्रः सुसंधिस्तस्य चात्मजः
Prabhu's son was Maru; Maru's son was Susandhi, and his own son,
आसीत्सहस्वतः पुत्रो राजा विश्रुतवानिति
Sahasvata's son was the renowned king Viśrutavat.
एते हीक्ष्वाकुदायादा राजानः शतशः स्मृताः
These, indeed, are remembered as hundreds of kings descended from Ikshvaku.
पठन्सम्यगिमां सृष्टिमादित्यस्य विवस्वतः
One who properly recites this creation of Aditya, of Vivasvat,
श्राद्धदेवस्य देवस्य प्रजानां पुष्टिदस्य च
Of Shraddhadeva, the god, the bestower of prosperity to beings,
विपाप्मा विरजाश्चैव आयुष्माञ्जायते ऽच्युतः
Becomes free from sin, pure, long-lived, and unfallen.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धात पादे भार्गवचरिते इक्ष्वाकुवंशकीर्त्तनं नाम त्रिषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Brahmanda Mahapurana, spoken by Vayu, in the middle section, in the third introductory part, in the account of Bhargava, is the sixty-third chapter named 'The Praise of the Ikshvaku Lineage.'
यो ऽसौ निवेशयामास पुरं देवपुरोपमम्
He who established the city, resembling the city of the gods,
यस्यान्ववाये जज्ञे वै जनको नृपसत्तमः
In whose line was born Janaka, the foremost of kings,
आसीत्पुत्रो महाराज चैक्ष्वाकोर्भूरितेजसः
There was a son of Ikshvaku, O great king, endowed with great brilliance.
तस्य पुत्रो मिथिर्नाम जनितः पर्वभिस्त्रिभिः
His son, named Mithi, was born through three sacred rites.
नाम्ना मिथिरिति ख्यातो जननाज्जनको ऽभवत्
He became known by the name Mithi, and from his birth Janaka arose.
राजासौ नाम जनको जनकाच्चा प्युदावसुः
That king was named Janaka, and from Janaka came Udavasu.
नन्दिवर्धनतः शूरः सुकेतुर्नाम धार्मिकः
From Nandivardhana came the valiant and righteous Suketu.
देवरातस्य धर्मात्मा बृहदुक्थ इति श्रुतः
Of Devarata, the righteous soul, Bṛhaduktha is said to be the son.
महावीर्यस्य धृतिमान् सुधृति स्तस्य चात्मजः
Of the mighty Mahavirya, the steadfast Sudhriti was his son.
धृष्टकेतुसुतश्चापि हर्यश्वो नाम विश्रुतः
And Dhṛṣṭaketu's son was Haryaśva, renowned by name.
प्रतिंबकस्य धर्मात्मा राजा कीर्त्तिरथः स्मृतः
The righteous king Kīrttiratha is remembered as the son of Pratiṃbaka.
देवमीढस्य विबुधो विबुधस्य महाधृतिः
Devamīḍha's son was Vibudha, and Vibudha's son was Mahādhṛti.
कीर्तिरातात्मजो विद्वान् महारोमेति विश्रुतः
Kīrtirāta's learned son, famed as Mahāroma.
स्वर्णरोमात्मजश्चापि ह्रस्वरोमाभवन्नृपः
And Svarṇaroma's son was the king Hrasvaroma.
उद्भिन्ना कर्षता येन सीता राज्ञा यशस्विनी
Sītā, the illustrious queen, was unearthed by the king while ploughing.
