श्रद्धा कामं प्रजज्ञे ऽथ दर्पो लक्ष्मी सुतः स्मृतः
Śraddhā gave birth to desire, and pride is said to be the son of Lakṣmī.
पुष्ट्या लाभः सुतश्चापि मेधापुत्रः श्रुतस्तथा
From Puṣṭi came gain as her son, and from Medhā, knowledge was born, as well as learning.
बुद्धेर्बोधः सुतश्चापि अप्रमादश्च तावुभौ
From intellect, understanding was born as a son, and both vigilance and awareness.
क्षेमः शान्तेः सुतश्चापि सुखं सिद्धेर्व्यजायत
From tranquility, welfare was born as a son, and happiness arose from accomplishment.
कामस्य तु सुतो हर्षो देव्यां सिद्ध्यां व्यजायत
From desire, joy was born as a son, from the goddess Siddhi.
जज्ञे हिंसा त्वधर्माद्वै निकृतिं चानृतं च ते
Violence was born from unrighteousness, along with deceit and falsehood.
माया च वेदना चापि मिथुनद्वयमेतयोः
Māyā and pain, these two pairs, arose from them.
वेदनायां ततश्चापि जेज्ञ दुःखं तु रौरवात्
From pain, suffering was born, originating from Raurava.
दुःखोत्तराः स्मृता ह्येते सर्वे चाधर्मलक्षणाः
These are all remembered as following suffering, and are marked by unrighteousness.
इत्येष तामसः सर्गो जज्ञे धर्मनिया मकः
Thus, this creation of darkness was born, governed by dharma.
सो ऽभिध्याय सतीं भार्यां निर्ममे चात्मसंभवान्
He, contemplating his faithful wife, created offspring from himself.
सहस्रं च सहस्राणामसृजत्कृत्तिवाससः
He produced thousands upon thousands of those clad in skins.
पिङ्गलान्सनिषङ्गांश्च कपर्दी नीललोहितान्
He created tawny ones, those with weapons, Kapardī, and those blue and red.
महारूपान्विरूपांश्च विश्वरूपाश्च रूपिणः
He made those of great form, deformed ones, and those of universal form and beauty.
सहस्रशतबाहूंश्च दिव्यभौमान्तरिक्षगान्
He produced those with hundreds and thousands of arms, dwelling in heaven, earth, and sky.
अन्नादान्पिशितादांश्च आज्यपान्सोमपोस्तथा
He created eaters of food, flesh-eaters, ghee-drinkers, and those who partake of soma.
सनिषङ्गतनुत्रांश्च धन्विनो ह्यसिचर्मिणः
Those who bear slender bodies, archers, and those with swords and shields.
अधीयानाश्च जपतो युञ्जतो ध्यायतस्तथा
Those who study, recite, practice, and meditate likewise.
बुद्धान्बुद्धतमांश्चैव ब्रह्मस्वान् ब्रह्मदर्शिनः
The wise and the most enlightened, possessors of Brahman, and seers of Brahman.
अदृश्यान्सर्वभूतानां महायोगान्महौजसः
Invisible to all beings, great yogis of immense brilliance.
अयातयामान् सृजतं रुद्रमेतान्सुरोत्तमान्
Rudra created those excellent gods who had not yet come into being.
न स्रष्टव्यात्मन स्तल्या प्रजा नैवाधिका तथा
One should not create beings who are unstable, nor those who are excessive.
नारभन्ते हि कर्माणि प्रजा विगतमृत्यवः
Indeed, those beings free from death do not undertake actions.
प्रजाः स्रक्ष्यामि भद्रं ते स्थितो ऽहं त्वं सृज प्रभो
I will create beings; blessings to you. I remain; you create, O Lord.
सहस्रं हि सहस्राणामात्मनो मम निःसृताः
A thousand times a thousand have emerged from myself.
पृथिव्यामन्तरिक्षे च रुद्राण्यस्ताः परिश्रुताः
Those Rudras are renowned on earth and in the atmosphere.
यज्ञभाजो भविष्यन्ति सर्वे देवगणैः सह
They will partake in sacrifices together with all the hosts of gods.
तैः सार्द्धमिज्यमानास्ते स्थास्यन्तीहायुगक्षयात्
Worshipped together with them, they will remain here until the end of the age.
प्रत्युवाच तथा भीमं त्दृष्यमाणः प्रजापतिः
Then the lord of creatures replied to Bhīma, who was thus seen.
ब्रह्मणा समनु ज्ञाते ततः सर्वमभूत्किल
When Brahmā had fully understood, then indeed everything came to be.
