विक्रान्ताः षष्टिसाहस्रा विधिना केन वा वद
Tell me, by what means or by whom did those sixty thousand mighty ones act?
ज्येष्ठा विदर्भदुहिता केशिनी नाम नामतः
The eldest was the daughter of Vidarbha, named Keśinī by name.
अरिष्टनेमिदुहिता रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि
The daughter of Ariṣṭanemi was unrivaled in beauty upon the earth.
एका जनिष्यते पुत्रं वंशकर्त्तारमीप्सितम्
She alone would give birth to a son, the desired continuer of the lineage.
मुनेस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा केशिनी पुत्रमेककम्
Hearing the sage’s words, Keśinī bore a single son.
षष्टिं पुत्रसहस्राणि सुपर्णभगिनी तथा
And Suparṇā, the sister of Garuḍa, gave birth to sixty thousand sons.
अथ काले गते ज्येष्ठा ज्येष्ठं पुत्रं व्यजायत
Then, when the time had passed, the elder wife gave birth to her eldest son.
सुमतिस्त्वपि जज्ञे वै गर्भतुंबं यशस्विनी
Sumati too, illustrious, gave birth to a womb shaped like a jar.
घृतपूर्णेषु कुंभेषु तान्गर्भान्यदधात्ततः
She placed those embryos into jars filled with ghee.
ततो नवसु मासेषु समुत्तस्थुर्यथासुखम्
Then, after nine months, they emerged comfortably.
कालेन महाता चैव यैवनं समुपाश्रिताः
With the passage of great time, they all attained youth.
असमञ्ज इति ख्यातो वर्हिकेतुर्महाबलः
The mighty Varhiketu, known as Asamañja, became renowned.
तस्य पुत्रोंऽशुमान्नाम असमञ्जस्य वीर्यवान्
His son, the valiant Aṃśumān, was born to Asamañja.
दिलीपात्तु महातेजा वीरो जातो भगीरथः
From Dilīpa was born the heroic and radiant Bhagīratha.
इहानीता सुरेशाद्वै दुहितृत्वे च कल्पिता
She was brought here by the lord of the gods and was established as a daughter.
भगीरथस्तु तां गङ्गामानयामास कर्मभिः
Bhagīratha, through his deeds, brought down that Gaṅgā.
भगीरथसुतश्चापि श्रुतो नाम बभूवह
And Bhagīratha’s son was born, named Śruta.
अम्बरीषः सुतस्तस्य सिंधुद्वीपस्ततो ऽभवत्
His son was Ambarīṣa, and from him came Siṃdhudvīpa.
नाभागेरंबरीषस्य भुजाभ्यां परिपालिता
Nābhāga, son of Ambarīṣa, was protected by his arms.
अयुतायुः सुतस्तस्य सिंधुद्वीपस्य वीर्यवान्
Ayutāyu, the valiant, was the son of Siṃdhudvīpa.
दिव्याक्षहृदयज्ञो ऽसौ राजा नलसखो बली
That mighty king, friend of Nala, was a knower of the divine dice and the heart of sacrifice.
वीरसेनात्मजश्चैव यश्चेक्ष्वाकुकुलोद्वहः
He was indeed the son of Vīrasena, and a foremost scion of the Ikṣvāku lineage.
सुदासस्तस्य तनयो राजा इन्द्रसखो ऽभवत्
Sudāsa, his son, became a king and a friend of Indra.
ख्यातः कल्माषपादो वै नाम्ना सित्रसहश्च सः
He became renowned by the name Kalmāṣapāda, and also as Sitrasaha.
अश्मकं जनयामास त्विक्ष्वाकुकुलवृद्धये
He begot Aśmaka, for the growth of the Ikṣvāku line.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमं मूलकं वै नृपं प्रति
Here too, they recite this story concerning King Mūlaka.
विवस्त्रस्त्राणमिच्छन्वै नारीकवच ईश्वरः
Desiring protection while unclothed, the lord took on the armor of a woman.
तस्माच्छतरथाज्जज्ञे राजा त्विडविडो बली
From Shataratha was born the mighty king Tviḍaviḍa.
पुत्रो विश्वसहस्रस्य पुत्रीकस्यां व्यजायत
He was born as the son of Viśvasahasra, from Putrikā.
येन स्वर्गादिहागत्य मुहूर्त्तं प्राप्य जीवितम्
He, having come here from heaven, attained life for a moment.
