याज्योत्थान्यायसंयोगाद्वसिष्ठः पर्यरक्षत
Vasiṣṭha protected him, as he was joined to the sacrificial duties and justice.
वसिष्ठे ऽभ्यधिकं मन्युं धारयामास मन्युना
He bore a greater anger towards Vasiṣṭha, filled with wrath.
न वारयामास मुनिर्वसिष्ठः कारणेन वै
The sage Vasiṣṭha did not restrain him, indeed for a reason.
एवं सत्यव्रतस्तां वै हृतवान्सप्तमे पदे
Thus Satyavrata indeed committed that act at the seventh step.
इति सत्यव्रतो रोषं वसिष्ठे मनसाकरोत्
Thus Satyavrata harbored anger in his mind towards Vasiṣṭha.
न तु सत्यव्रतो ऽबुध्यदुपांशुव्रतमस्य वै
But Satyavrata did not realize that this was his silent vow.
तेन द्वादश वर्षाणि नावर्षत्पाकशासनः
Because of that, for twelve years, the lord of rain did not shower.
कुलस्य निष्कृतिः स्वस्य सृतेयं च भवेदिति
Thinking, ‘This will be the expiation for my family and myself.’
अभिषेक्ष्याम्यहं नष्टे पश्चादेनमिति प्रभुः
The lord said, 'I will anoint him after this one is lost.'
अविद्यमाने मांसे तु वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः
But when the flesh of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha was not to be found,
तां वै क्रोधाच्च मोहाच्च श्रमच्चैव क्षुधान्वितः
Then, out of anger, delusion, exhaustion, and hunger,
सतु मांसं स्वयं चैव विश्वामित्रस्य चात्मजान्
He himself, along with the sons of Viśvāmitra, became flesh.
प्रोवाच चैव भगवान्वसिष्ठस्तं नृपात्मजम्
And the venerable Vasiṣṭha spoke to that prince,
यदि ते त्रीणि शङ्कूनि न स्युर्हि पुरुषाधम
'If you did not have three stakes, O lowest of men,'
अप्रोक्षितोपयोगाच्च त्रिविधस्ते व्यतिक्रमः
'Because you used what was not sprinkled, you have committed a threefold transgression.'
त्रिशङ्कुरिति होवाच त्रिशङ्कुस्तेन स स्मृतः
He said, 'Triśaṅku,' and thus he became known as Triśaṅku.
ततस्तस्मै वरं प्रादात्तदा प्रीतस्त्रिशङ्कवे
Then, pleased, he granted a boon to Triśaṅku.
सशरीरो व्रजे स्वर्गमित्येवं याचितो वरः
He requested the boon, 'May I ascend to heaven with this very body.'
अभिषिच्य राज्ये पित्र्ये योजयामास तं मुनिः
The sage installed him in the ancestral kingdom after anointing him.
सशरीरं तदा तं वै दिवमारोपयत्प्रभुः
Then the lord raised him up to heaven with his body.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमं श्लोकं पौराणिका जनाः
Here too, the ancient sages recite this verse:
देवैः सार्द्धं महातेजानुग्रहात्तस्य धीमतः
By the favor of the mighty, together with the gods, to that wise one,
कुमारं जनयामास हरिश्चन्द्रमकल्मषम्
A son was born, Hariścandra, free from sin.
अहर्ता राजसूयस्य सम्रडिति परिश्रुतः
He became renowned as the sovereign performer of the Rājasūya sacrifice.
हरितो रोहितस्याथ चञ्चुर्हरीत उच्यते
Harita is called the son of Rohita, and his son is known as Harīta.
चैता सर्वस्य क्षत्रस्य विजयस्तेन स स्मृतः
Because of him, all the kṣatriya race is victorious; thus he is remembered.
रुरुकात्तु वृकः पुत्रस्तस्माद्बाहुर्विजज्ञिवान्
From Ruruka was born a son, Vṛka; from him, Bāhu was born.
शकैर्यवनकांबोजैः पारदैः पह्लवैस्तथा
By the Śakas, Yavanas, Kāmbojas, Pāradas, and also the Pahlavas—
सगरस्तु सुतो बाहोर्जज्ञे सह गरेण वै
Sagara, the son of Bāhu, was born together with Gareṇa.
अग्नेयमस्त्रं लब्ध्वा तु भार्गवात्सगरो नृपः
Having obtained the missile of Agni from Bhārgava, King Sagara—
