नर्मदायां समुत्पन्नः संभूतस्तस्य चात्मजः
Were born from Narmada; he had a son who was born there.
रावणेन हतो येन त्रैलोक्यं विजितं पुरा
By whom Ravana was slain, and the three worlds were conquered in ancient times.
हर्यश्वात्तु दृषद्वत्यां जज्ञे च सुमतिर्नृपः
From Haryashva and Drishadvati was born King Sumati.
आसीत्त्रिधन्वनश्चापि विद्वांस्त्रय्यारुणिः प्रभुः
There was also Tridhanvan, wise and powerful, of the Trayyaruni line.
तेन भार्या विदर्भस्य त्दृता हत्वा दिवौकसः
His wife, the daughter of Vidarbha, was slain by the gods.
कामाद्बलाच्च मोहाच्च संहर्षेण बलेन च
Out of desire, strength, delusion, and exhilaration of power,
तमधर्मेण संयुक्तं पिता भय्यारुणो ऽत्यजत्
His father, Bhayyaruni, abandoned him for being associated with unrighteousness.
पितरं सो ऽब्रवीदेकः क्व गच्छामीति वै मुहुः
He repeatedly said to his father, 'Where shall I go?'
नाहं पुत्रेण पुत्रार्थी त्वयाद्य कुलपांसन
'I do not desire a son through you, O defiler of the lineage, nor am I a father to you today.'
न चैनं वारयामास वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः
Nor did the venerable sage Vasishtha restrain him.
पित्रा त्यक्तो ऽवसद्धीरः पिता चास्य वनं ययौ
Abandoned by his father, the steadfast one remained, while his father went to the forest.
समा द्वादश संपूर्मास्तेनाधर्मेण वै तदा
For twelve full years, he endured that unrighteousness at that time.
संन्यस्य सागरानूपे चचार विपुलं तपः
Renouncing everything, he performed intense austerity on the shore of the ocean.
शिष्टानां भरणार्थाय व्यक्रीणाद्गोशतेन वै
For the sake of supporting the dependents, he sold a hundred cows.
महर्षिपुत्रं धर्मात्मा मोक्षयामास सुव्रतः
The virtuous one freed the sage’s son, being righteous in soul.
विश्वामित्रस्य तुष्ट्यर्थमनुकंपार्थमेव च
For the satisfaction of Viśvāmitra, and also out of compassion.
महर्षिः कौशिकस्तात तेन वीरेण मोक्षितः
Thus, O dear one, the great sage Kauśika was freed by that hero.
विश्वामित्रकलत्रं च बभार विनये स्थितः
He, steadfast in discipline, supported Viśvāmitra’s wife.
विश्वामित्राश्रमाभ्यासे तन्मांसमनयत्ततः
Then he brought that meat near Viśvāmitra’s hermitage.
पितुर्नियोगादभजन्नृपे तु वनमास्थिते
By his father’s command, he served, while the king had taken to the forest.
याज्योत्थान्यायसंयोगाद्वसिष्ठः पर्यरक्षत
Vasiṣṭha protected him, as he was joined to the sacrificial duties and justice.
वसिष्ठे ऽभ्यधिकं मन्युं धारयामास मन्युना
He bore a greater anger towards Vasiṣṭha, filled with wrath.
न वारयामास मुनिर्वसिष्ठः कारणेन वै
The sage Vasiṣṭha did not restrain him, indeed for a reason.
एवं सत्यव्रतस्तां वै हृतवान्सप्तमे पदे
Thus Satyavrata indeed committed that act at the seventh step.
इति सत्यव्रतो रोषं वसिष्ठे मनसाकरोत्
Thus Satyavrata harbored anger in his mind towards Vasiṣṭha.
न तु सत्यव्रतो ऽबुध्यदुपांशुव्रतमस्य वै
But Satyavrata did not realize that this was his silent vow.
तेन द्वादश वर्षाणि नावर्षत्पाकशासनः
Because of that, for twelve years, the lord of rain did not shower.
कुलस्य निष्कृतिः स्वस्य सृतेयं च भवेदिति
Thinking, ‘This will be the expiation for my family and myself.’
अभिषेक्ष्याम्यहं नष्टे पश्चादेनमिति प्रभुः
The lord said, 'I will anoint him after this one is lost.'
अविद्यमाने मांसे तु वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः
But when the flesh of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha was not to be found,
