Having slain a thousand deer, the mighty one became weary.
When Vikukshi, the great warrior, returned with the meat,
Commanded thus by the king, he presented it properly, as prescribed.
By your son, O king, this meat has been defiled.
Earlier, a hare was eaten by the wicked-minded one, O sinless one.
Then Ikshvaku, enraged, spoke these words to Vikukshi:
You, pitiless one, first ate the hare in the forest today.
Thus, by Ikshvaku, the son was abandoned at the instruction of Vasishta.
He, possessing the virtue of his enemies, became the lord of Ayodhya.
Thus, filled with that fault, the king remained established in the kingdom.
Knowing this story thus, a wise man should not eat such food.
This, the true nature of meat, is declared by the wise.
From Indra, who became a bull, Kakutstha was born in ancient times.
By him was Kakutstha, and by him Pṛthu is remembered.
From Andhra came Yuvanashva, and Shavasta was his son.
The illustrious Brihadashva was the heir of Shravasta.
But the king who killed Dhundhu then attained the title 'Dhundhumāra.'
For what reason did Kuvalāśva attain the title 'Dhundhumāra'?
All were skilled in every science, powerful, and difficult to overcome.
Kuvalāśva, of great valor, heroic, and supremely righteous,
The king, having transferred his royal glory to his son, entered the forest.
As he was about to depart, the Brahmarṣi Utaṅka stopped him.
O king, not even Indra could practice austerities there without anxiety.
There, O lord of the earth, stands an ocean filled with sand.
There, hidden beneath the ground, concealed by sand, lies a great being.
He lies there, undertaking fierce austerity, intent on the destruction of the worlds.
Whenever that happens, the earth there, along with its forests, would tremble.
Obstructing the path of the sun, for seven days the earth would quake.
Because of this, O king, I am unable to remain in my own hermitage there.
His energy is immense, O enemy of your foes; he will increase in power by his austerity.
