प्रक्षिप्तमेव कलयाचोपादानारयो भवेत्
Only what is cast forth by art, with the ascent and taking up, should be considered.
उच्चराद्विश्वरारूढातथायाष्टस्वरातथा
From the utterance, from the universal ascent, and likewise from the eight notes.
एकान्तरं च ह्येतेवैतमेवस्वरसत्तमः
Indeed, these are arranged alternately, O best among the wise.
अलङ्कारा भवन्त्येते त्रिंशद्देवैः प्रकीर्त्तिताः
These adornments are described as thirty by the gods.
संस्थानं च प्रमाणं च विकारो लक्षणस्तथा
Their form, measure, transformation, and characteristics are thus.
यथात्मनो ह्यलङ्कारो विपयस्तो विगर्हितः
Just as an ornament unsuitable for oneself is considered blameworthy,
नानाभरणसंयोगा यथा नार्या विभूषणम्
So is the combination of various ornaments, as a woman's adornment.
न पादे कुण्डलं दृष्टं न कण्ठे रसना तथा
A ring is not seen on the foot, nor a necklace on the throat.
क्रियमाणो ऽप्यलङ्कारो नागं यश्चैव दर्शयत्
Even when an ornament is made, if it shows a serpent, it is not proper.
लक्षणंपर्यवस्यापिवर्त्तिका मपिवर्त्तते
Even when the characteristic is completed, the rule still applies.
त्रयोविंशतिशीतिस्तु विज्ञातपवदैवतम्
Twenty-three are known as the cold ones, and are called divine.
तयोर्विभागो देवानां लावण्ये मार्गसंस्थितः
Their distinction among the gods is established in the path of beauty.
विपर्ययः संवर्त्तो च सप्तस्वरपदक्रमम्
Reversal and dissolution occur in the sequence of the seven notes.
पञ्चमंमध्यमञ्चैवधैवतं तु निषादतः
The fifth and the middle, and also the dhaivata, arise from nishada.
द्वेव्द्यपरतुकिंविद्याद्द्वयमुष्णन्तिकस्यतु
One should know two as belonging to the other, and two to the hot ones.
पदस्यात्ययरूपन्तुसप्तरूपन्तुकौशिकीम्
Of the note, the extreme forms are seven, and also the Kaushiki.
एषचैवक्रमोद्दिष्टोमध्यमांशस्य मध्यमः
This sequence is prescribed for the middle part of the madhyama.
ततः सप्तस्वरङ्कार्यंसप्तरूपञ्चकौशिकी
Then, the ornamentation of the seven notes is the fivefold Kaushiki.
द्वितीयामासमात्राणाभिः सर्वाः प्रतिष्ठिताः
All are established by the second and the equal measures.
तथाहतानोपिडकेयत्रमायांनिवर्त्तते
Thus, even those struck are released everywhere by Māyā.
संख्यापनोपहूतांवैतत्रपानमिति स्मृतम्
This is known as the drink called 'Samkhya-pana', which is invoked by enumeration.
पूर्वमष्ठतीटती नद्वितीयं चापरान्तिकैः
First is the Ashtatīṭatī river, and the second is by those dwelling at the ends.
चतुर्थमुत्तरं चैवमद्रवत्पावमद्रकौ
The fourth is in the north; thus, the unmelted and the pure have been seen.
सर्वमेवानुयोगं तु द्वितीयं बुद्धिमिष्यते
Indeed, the second is considered the intellect regarding all inquiry.
एकत्वं मुनुयोगस्य द्वयोर्यद्यद्द्विजोत्तम
O best of twice-born, the unity of the sage's practice is in both, whatever pertains to the two.
तिसृणां चैव वृत्तीनां वृत्तौ वृत्ते च दक्षिणः
And among the three functions, in the function and in the circle, the right side is indicated.
कस्यनासुतराचैव स्वरशाखा प्रकीर्त्तिता
And thus, the branch of sound has been described as not inferior to any.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे भार्गवचरिते गान्धर्वलक्षणं नाम द्विषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the sixty-second chapter, named 'The Characteristics of the Gandharvas', in the Bhargava narrative, in the third section of the middle part, as spoken by Vayu, in the glorious Brahmanda Mahapurana.
त्दृता पुण्यजनैः सर्वा राक्षसैः साकुशस्थली
All those holy people, along with the Rakshasas, and the land of Kusasthali, were thus established.
निबध्यमानं नाराचैर्विदिशः प्राद्रवद्भयात्
