आजगाम युवा चैव स्वां पुरीं यादवैर्वृताम्
Then, still youthful, he returned to his own city, which was surrounded by the Yādavas.
भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकैर्गुप्तां वसुदेवपुरोगमैः
That city was protected by the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas, with Vasudeva at their head.
दत्त्वा जगाम शिखरं मेरोस्तपसि संस्थितः
Having given his daughter, he departed to the summit of Meru, intent on ascetic practice.
तां कथामृषयः श्रुत्वा पप्रच्छुक्तदनन्तरम्
After hearing that story, the sages questioned him further.
एतच्छुश्रूषमाणान्नो गान्धर्वं वद चैव हि
As we are eager to hear, tell us also about the Gandharva music.
न च रोगः प्रभवति ब्रह्मलोकं गतस्य ह
Indeed, no disease afflicts one who has reached the world of Brahmā.
ततो ऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि याथातथ्येन सुव्रताः
Therefore, O virtuous ones, I shall now explain this to you exactly as it is.
तानाश्चैकोनपञ्चाशदित्येत्स्वरमण्डलम्
There are fifty-one such notes, which are called the svaramaṇḍala.
धैवतश्चापि विज्ञेयस्तथा चापि निषादकः
Know also Dhaivata and likewise Niṣāda among them.
सौवीरा मध्यमा ग्रामा हरिणाश्च तथैव च
The Sauvīra, Madhyama, and Grāma notes, as well as Hariṇa, are also included.
नग्निं च पौषा वै देव दृष्ट्वा काञ्च यथाक्रमः
Nagni and Pauṣa, O sage, and Kāñca are to be known in their proper order.
उत्तरं मन्द्रा रजनी तथा वाचोन्नरायताः
The Mandrā of the north, the Rajanī, and also the Uṇnarāyata notes.
गान्धारग्रामिका श्यामा कीर्तिमाना निबोधत
Learn also of the Gāndhāra, Grāmika, and Śyāmā notes, which are renowned.
यवरातसूयस्तु षष्ठवत्तु सुवर्मकम्
Yavarātasūya is the sixth, and likewise Suvarmaka.
नागयक्षाश्रयं विद्वान् तद्गोत्तरतथैव च
The wise know the Nāga and Yakṣa notes, and those that follow after them.
सूर्यकान्तधरेण्यैव संतकोकिलविश्रुतः
The Sūryakānta, Dhareṇya, and the famous Saṃtakokila are also included.
सावित्रमर्धसावित्रं सर्वतोभद्रमेव च
The Sāvitra and half-Sāvitra, as well as the Sarvatobhadra.
अलंबुषेसेष्टमथो विष्णुवैणवरावुभौ
The Alaṃbuṣa is esteemed, and both the Viṣṇu and Vaiṇava.
हतोत्सृष्टो विजानीत स्कन्धं तु प्रियमेव च
One should know that, when destroyed and released, the Skandha is especially dear.
अलंबुसेष्टस्य तथा नारदप्रिय एव च
Likewise, the Alaṃbuṣa is esteemed, and also dear to Nārada.
विकलोपनीतविनताश्रीराख्यो भार्गवप्रियः
The Vikalopa, brought forth and humbled, called Śrīrākha, is dear to Bhārgava.
ससौवीरां सुसोवीरा ब्रह्मणो ह्यपगीयते
The Sasauvīrā and Susovīrā are sung in praise of Brahmā.
हरिदेशसमुत्पन्ना हरिणस्याव्यजायत
Born in the region of Hari, it was produced by Hari.
करोपनीता विवृतावनुद्रिः स्वरमण्डले
Brought forth by the hand, revealed, unobstructed, in the realm of sound.
मनुदेशाः समुत्पन्ना मूर्च्छनाशुद्धमात्मना
The regions of Manu arose, with modulation, pure in their essence.
सावश्रमसमाद्युम्ना अनेकापौरुषानखान्
With the same ashrama and equal vigor, possessing many human and non-human qualities.
तानि उत्तर मद्रांसपद्गदैवतकं विदुः
These are known as the northern Madra, the Padgadaivata.
तमोदुत्तरमैद्रोयदेवतास्याद्रुवेन च
The Tamoduttara, the Maidroya deity, and also the Syādru.
स्यादिजमूर्छनाह्येच पितरः श्राद्धदेवताः
The origin of modulation is indeed the Pitṛs, the deities of the Śrāddha.
उपैति तस्मान्नजानी याच्छुद्धयच्छिकरासभा
It approaches, but one does not know; those pure, those with sharp cries, and those resembling asses.
