करूषस्य तु कारूषाः क्षत्त्रिया युद्धदुर्मदाः
The Kārūṣas are the Kṣatriyas of Karūṣa, fierce in battle.
नाभागो दिष्टपुत्रस्तु विद्वानासीद्भलन्दनः
Nābhāga, the son given by destiny, was a wise descendant of Bhala.
प्रांशोरेको ऽभवत्पुत्रः प्रजापतिसमो नृपः
Prāṃśu had a single son, a king equal to Prajāpati.
विवादो ऽत्र महानासीत्संवर्त्तस्य बृहस्पतेः
A great dispute arose between Saṃvarta and Bṛhaspati.
संवर्त्तेन तते यज्ञे चुकोप स भृशं तदा
Saṃvarta became greatly enraged during the sacrifice at that time.
मरुत्तश्चक्रवर्त्ती स नरिष्यन्तमवासवान्
Marutta, the emperor, performed a sacrifice for Nariṣyanta.
तस्य पुत्रस्तु विज्ञातो राजासीद्राष्ट्रवर्द्धनः
His son, known as Rāṣṭravardhana, became king.
केवलस्य पुत्रस्तु बन्धुमान्केवलात्मजः
Bandhumān was the son of Kevala, born from Kevala himself.
बुधो वेगवतः पुत्रस्तृणबिन्दुर्बुधात्मजः
Budha, son of Vegavat, was Tṛṇabindu, born of Budha.
कन्या तु तस्येडविडामाता विश्रवसो हि सा
His daughter was Iḍaviḍā, mother of Viśravas; indeed, she was so.
दाश्वान्प्रख्यातवीर्य्यौजा विशाला येन निर्मिता
Dāśvān, renowned for his strength and vigor, founded Viśālā.
सुचन्द्र इति विख्यातो हेमचन्द्रादनन्तरः
Sucandra, so named, succeeded Hemacandra.
धूम्राश्वतनयो विद्वान्सृंजयः समपद्यत
Dhūmrāśva's learned son was Sṛṃjaya.
कृशाश्वः सहदेवस्य पुत्रः परमधार्मिकः
Kṛśāśva, son of Sahadeva, was supremely righteous.
सोमदत्तस्य राजर्षेः सुतो ऽभूज्जनमेजयः
Somadatta, the royal sage, had a son named Janamejaya.
तृणबिन्दुप्रभावेण सर्वे वैशालका नृपाः
All the kings of Vaiśālaka were empowered by Tṛṇabindu.
शर्यातेर्मिथुनं त्वासीदानर्त्तो नाम विश्रुतः
Śaryāti had a pair of children, of whom Ānarta was renowned.
आनर्त्तस्य तु दायादो रेवो नाम सुवीर्यवान्
Ānarta's heir was Reva, famed for his great strength.
रेवस्य रैवतः पुत्रः ककुद्मी नाम धार्मिकः
Raivata, the son of Revata, was a righteous man named Kakudmi.
कन्यया सह श्रुत्वा च गान्धर्वं ब्रह्मणोंऽतिके
Together with his daughter, he listened to the Gandharva music in the presence of Brahmā.
आजगाम युवा चैव स्वां पुरीं यादवैर्वृताम्
Then, still youthful, he returned to his own city, which was surrounded by the Yādavas.
भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकैर्गुप्तां वसुदेवपुरोगमैः
That city was protected by the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas, with Vasudeva at their head.
दत्त्वा जगाम शिखरं मेरोस्तपसि संस्थितः
Having given his daughter, he departed to the summit of Meru, intent on ascetic practice.
तां कथामृषयः श्रुत्वा पप्रच्छुक्तदनन्तरम्
After hearing that story, the sages questioned him further.
एतच्छुश्रूषमाणान्नो गान्धर्वं वद चैव हि
As we are eager to hear, tell us also about the Gandharva music.
न च रोगः प्रभवति ब्रह्मलोकं गतस्य ह
Indeed, no disease afflicts one who has reached the world of Brahmā.
ततो ऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि याथातथ्येन सुव्रताः
Therefore, O virtuous ones, I shall now explain this to you exactly as it is.
तानाश्चैकोनपञ्चाशदित्येत्स्वरमण्डलम्
There are fifty-one such notes, which are called the svaramaṇḍala.
धैवतश्चापि विज्ञेयस्तथा चापि निषादकः
Know also Dhaivata and likewise Niṣāda among them.
सौवीरा मध्यमा ग्रामा हरिणाश्च तथैव च
The Sauvīra, Madhyama, and Grāma notes, as well as Hariṇa, are also included.
