यदा तैरिह सृष्टैस्तु धर्म्माद्यैश्च महर्षिभिः
When, by them and by the great sages beginning with Dharma, creation was made here,
तमोमात्रावृतः सो ऽभूच्छोकप्रतिहतश्च वै
He became enveloped by the measure of darkness and was struck by sorrow.
पुत्राणां च तमोमात्रा अपरा निःसृताभवत्
And from the sons, another measure of darkness emerged.
ततः प्रतिहते तस्य प्रतीते वरणात्मके
Then, when his manifestation was hindered, in the form of choice,
द्विधा कृत्वा स्वकं देहमर्द्धेन पुरुषो ऽभवत्
Dividing his own body in two, he became a man with half.
प्रकृतिर्भूतधात्री सा कामाद्वै सृजतः प्रभोः
That nature, the bearer of beings, from desire, created by the Lord.
ब्रह्माणः सा तनुः पूर्वा दिवमावृत्य तिष्टतः
That was the former body of Brahma, remaining, covering the heavens.
सा देवी नियुतं तप्त्वा तपः परम दुश्चरम्
That goddess, having performed austerity for a myriad years, endured the most difficult penance.
स वै स्वायंभुवः पूर्वं पुरुषो मनुरुच्यते
He, the primordial Svayambhu, is called Manu, the man.
लब्ध्वा तु पुरुषः पत्नीं शतरूपामयोनिजाम्
Having obtained a wife, the man, born from no womb, named Shatarupa.
प्रथमः संप्रयोगः स कल्पादौ समवर्त्तत
The first union occurred at the beginning of the kalpa.
सम्राट् सशतरूपस्तु वैराजस्तु मनुः स्मृतः
The sovereign with a hundred forms is remembered as Manu, the son of Virāj.
वैराजात्पुरुषाद्वीरौ शतरूपा व्यजायत
From Virāj, from the Puruṣa, the heroic Śatarūpā was born.
कन्ये द्वे सुमहाभागे याभ्यां जाता इमाः प्रजाः
Two daughters of great fortune, from whom these beings were born.
स्वायंभुवः प्रसूतिं तु दक्षाय व्यसृजत्प्रभुः
Svāyambhuva, the lord, gave Prasūti to Dakṣa.
आकूत्यां मिथुनं जज्ञे मानसस्य रुचेः शुभम्
In Ākūti, a virtuous pair was born to the mind-born Ruci.
यज्ञस्य दक्षिणायां च पुत्रा द्वादश जज्ञिरे
And in Dakṣiṇā, twelve sons were born to Yajña.
यमस्य पुत्रा यज्ञस्य तस्माद्यामास्तु ते स्मृताः
The sons of Yama are the sons of Yajña; therefore, they are known as Yāmās.
यामाः पूर्वं परिक्रान्ता येषां संज्ञा दिवौकसः
The Yāmās, who first moved about, are called the dwellers of heaven.
तस्यां कन्याश्चतुर्विंशद्दक्षस्त्वजनयत्प्रभुः
In her, Dakṣa, the lord, begot twenty-four daughters.
योगपत्न्यश्च ताः सर्वाः सर्वास्ता योगमातरः
All of them were devoted wives, all were mothers of yoga.
श्रद्धा लक्ष्मीर्धृतिस्तुष्टिः पुष्टिर्मेधा तथा क्रिया
Śraddhā, Lakṣmī, Dhṛti, Tuṣṭi, Puṣṭi, Medhā, and also Kriyā.
पत्न्यर्थं प्रतिजग्राह धर्मो दाक्षायणीः प्रभुः
Dharma, the lord, accepted the daughters of Dakṣa as wives.
यान्याः शिष्टा यवीयस्य एकादश सुलोचनाः
The remaining eleven, younger and fair-eyed.
सन्नतिश्चानसूया च ऊर्जा स्वाहा स्वधा तथा
Sannati, Anasūyā, Ūrjā, Svāhā, and also Svadhā.
रुद्रो भृगुर्मरीचिश्च अङ्गिराः पुलहः क्रतुः
Rudra, Bhṛgu, Marīci, Aṅgirā, Pulaha, and Kratu.
सतीं भवाय प्रायच्छत्ख्यातिं च भृगवे तथा
He gave Satī to Bhava, and Khyāti to Bhṛgu.
प्रीतिं चैव पुलस्त्याय क्षमां वै पुलहाय च
He gave Prīti to Pulastya, and Kṣamā to Pulaha.
ऊर्जां ददौ वसिष्ठाय स्वाहां चैवाग्नये ददौ
He gave energy to Vasiṣṭha, and offered Svāhā to Agni.
एताः सर्वा महाभागाः प्रजास्त्वनुसृताः स्थिताः
All these noble ones, the progeny, have followed and are established.
