यमस्तु तेन शापेन भृशं पीडितमानसः
Yama, greatly afflicted in mind by that curse,
सो ऽलभत्कर्मणां तेन शुभेन परमां द्युतिम्
By that virtuous act, he attained supreme splendor.
मनुः प्रजापतिस्त्वेष सावर्णिः स महायशाः
This Manu, the illustrious Sāvarṇi, is the lord of progeny.
मेरुपृष्ठे तपो घोरमद्यापि चरते प्रभुः
Even now, the lord performs severe austerity on the summit of Meru.
त्वष्टा तु तेन रूपेण विष्णोश्चक्रमकल्पयत्
Tvaṣṭā, taking that form, fashioned the discus of Viṣṇu.
यवीयसी तयोर्या तु यमुनाच यशस्विनी
The younger of the two, renowned Yamunā, was born.
यस्तु ज्येष्ठो महातेजाः सर्गो यस्येति सांप्रतम्
The elder, possessed of great brilliance, is the one whose creation is now present.
इदं तु जन्म देवानां शृणुयाद्वा पठेच्च वा
Whoever hears or recites this birth of the gods,
आपदं प्राप्य मुच्येत प्राप्नुयाच्च महद्यशः
Having encountered misfortune, will be freed and attain great fame.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे वैवस्वतोत्पत्तिर्नामैकोनषष्टितमोध्यायः
Thus ends the fifty-ninth chapter called 'The Origin of Vaivasvata,' in the third section of the Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa as spoken by Vāyu.
वैवस्वताय महते पृथिवीराज्यमादिशत्
He appointed the great Vaivasvata to the sovereignty of the earth.
इक्ष्वाकुश्च नृगश्चैव धृष्टः शर्यातिरेवच
Ikṣvāku, Nṛga, Dhṛṣṭa, and Śaryāti as well,
करूषश्च पृषध्रश्च नवैते मानवाः स्मृताः
Karūṣa and Pṛṣadhra—these nine are remembered as sons of Manu.
यष्टुं प्रजक्रमे कामं हयमेधेन भूपतिः
The king began to perform the horse sacrifice as he wished.
मित्रावरुणयोरंशे अनलाहुतिमेव यत्
From the portion of Mitra and Varuṇa, Analāhuti was born.
दिव्यासंहनना चैव इला जज्ञ इति श्रुतम्
Ilā, of divine form, was also born, as it is heard.
अनुगच्छस्व भद्रं ते तमिला प्रत्युवाच ह
‘Go forth, may good fortune be yours,’ Tamilā spoke to her.
मित्रावरुणयोरंशे जातास्मि वदतां वर
‘I am born from the portion of Mitra and Varuṇa, O best of speakers,’ she said.
एवमुक्त्वा पुनर्देवी तयोरन्तिकमागमत्
Having spoken thus, the goddess again approached the two.
अंशे ऽस्मिन्युवयोर्जाता देवौ किं करवाणि वाम्
‘Born in your portion, O gods, what shall I do for you?’
तथा तु ब्रुवतीं साध्वीमिडामाश्रित्य तावुभौ
Thus speaking, the virtuous one, relying on Iḍā, addressed both of them.
अनेन तव धर्मज्ञे प्रश्रयोण दमेन च
By this, O knower of dharma, through humility and self-restraint,
आवयोस्त्वं महाभागे ख्यातिं कन्ये प्रयास्यसि
O noble maiden, you shall attain fame through both of us.
जगत्प्रियो धर्मशीलो मनोर्वंशविवर्द्धनः
He is beloved by the world, righteous in conduct, and the enhancer of Manu's lineage.
सा तु देवी वरं लब्ध्वा निवृत्ता पितरं प्रति
That goddess, having obtained her boon, withdrew from her father.
सोमपुत्राद्बुधाच्चास्यामैलो जज्ञे पुरूखाः
From Budha, son of Soma, was born Purūkhā, pure in lineage.
सुद्युम्नस्य तु दायादास्त्रयः परमधार्मिकाः
Sudyumna had three heirs, supremely righteous.
उत्कलस्योत्कलं राष्ट्रं विनतस्यापि पश्चिमम्
Utkala received the land of Utkala, and Vinata the western region.
प्रविष्टेतु मनौ तस्मिन्प्रजाः सृष्ट्वा दिवाकरम्
When Manu entered there, having created the beings, he approached the Sun.
इक्ष्वाकुरेव दायादो भागं दशममाप्तवान्
Only Ikshvaku, as an heir, obtained the tenth share.
