श्रुतश्रवा मनुस्ताभ्यां सावर्णिर्वै भविष्यति
From those two, Śrutaśravā and Manu, Sāvarṇi will indeed be born in the future.
मनुरेवाभवत्सो ऽपि सावर्णिरिति चोच्यते
That son also became Manu and is called Sāvarṇi.
चकाराभ्यधिकं स्नेहं त तथा पूर्वजेषु वै
He showed even greater affection for them than for the earlier-born children.
बहुशो जल्पमानस्तु सापत्न्यादतिदुःखितः
Often speaking with his co-wife, he became extremely distressed.
यदा संतर्जयामास च्छायां वैवस्वतो यमः
When Yama, son of Vivasvat, threatened Chāyā,
यदा तर्जयसे ऽकस्मात्पितृभार्यां यशस्विनीम्
When you, without cause, threaten your father's illustrious wife,
यमस्तु तेन शापेन भृशं पीडितमानसः
Yama, deeply troubled in mind by that curse,
भृशं शापभयोद्विग्नः संज्ञावाक्यैर्विनिर्जितः
Greatly agitated by fear of the curse, he was overcome by Saṃjñā's words.
बाल्याद्वा यदि वा मोहात्तद्भवान्क्षन्तुमर्हति
Whether from childhood or from delusion, you ought to forgive him.
तव प्रसादो नस्त्रातुमेतस्मान्महतो भयात्
Your favor alone can save us from this great fear.
असंशयं पुत्र महद्भविष्यत्यत्र कारणम्
Without doubt, my son, there is a great reason for this.
न शक्यमेतन्मिथ्य तु कर्त्तुं मातुर्वचस्तव
It is not possible to make your mother's words false.
ततः पादं महाप्राज्ञ पुनः सांप्राप्स्यसे सुखम्
Therefore, O greatly wise one, you will again happily regain your foot.
शापस्य परिहारेण त्वं च त्रातो भविष्यसि
By the removal of the curse, you too will be protected.
तुल्येष्वभ्यधिकस्नेह एकस्मिन्क्रियते त्वया
Among equals, you show greater affection to one.
आत्मना स समाधाय योगात्तत्त्वमपश्यत
He, having composed himself through yoga, perceived the truth with his own self.
सा तत्सर्वं यथा तत्त्वमाचचक्षे विवस्वतः
She explained all of that to Vivasvat just as it truly was.
त्वष्टा तु तं यथान्यायमर्चयित्वा विभावसुम्
Tvaṣṭṛ, having duly worshipped the blazing one,
तवातितेजसा युक्तमिदं रूपं न शोभते
This form, endowed with your excessive radiance, does not appear fitting.
द्रक्ष्यते तां भवनद्य स्वां भार्यां शुभचारिणीम्
Today you will see your own wife, who conducts herself virtuously.
अनुकूलं भवेदेवं यदि स्यात्समयो मतः
Let it be agreeable in this way, if the time is considered suitable.
रूपं विवस्वतस्त्वासीत्तिर्यगूर्द्ध्वमधस्तथा
The form of Vivasvat was spread sideways, upwards, and downwards.
तस्मात्ते समचक्रं तु वर्तते रूपमद्भुतम्
Therefore, from you there exists a wondrous, circular form.
ततो ऽभ्युपागमत्त्वष्टा मार्त्तण्डस्य विवस्वतः
Then Tvaṣṭṛ approached Mārtaṇḍa Vivasvat.
तं निर्मूलित तेजस्कं तेजसापहृतेन तु
He saw him deprived of his radiance, his brilliance taken away.
ददर्श योगमास्थाय स्वां भार्यां वडवां तथा
Assuming yogic concentration, he beheld his own wife, Vaḍavā.
अश्वरूपेण मार्त्तण्डस्तां मुखे समभावयत्
Mārtaṇḍa, in the form of a horse, united with her in her mouth.
सा तं निःसारयामास नोभ्यां शुक्रं विवस्वतः
She expelled from both nostrils the semen of Vivasvat.
नासत्यश्चैव दस्रश्च स्मृतौ द्वादशमूर्तितः
Nāsatya and Dasra, from that, are remembered as the twelfth forms.
तां तु रूपेण कान्तेन दर्शयामास भास्करः
The radiant one revealed her in a lovely form.
