नैतन्न्यूनं भवादण्डं मार्त्तण्डस्त्वं भवानघ
This is not inferior; you are the Sun, O sinless one.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा नामान्वर्थमुदाहरन्
Hearing those words, he spoke the name according to its meaning.
तस्माद्विवस्वान्मार्त्तण्डः पुराणज्ञैर्विभाव्यते
Therefore, Vivasvan is recognized as Martanda by those learned in the Puranas.
विजज्ञे सवितुर्भार्या संज्ञा पुत्रांस्तु त्रीन्पुनः
Sanjna, the wife of Savitar, again gave birth to three children.
शनैश्चरं तथैवैते मार्त्तण्डस्यात्मजाः स्मृताः
Shani and the others are remembered as the sons of Martanda.
तस्य संज्ञाभवद्भार्या त्वाष्ट्री देवी विवस्वतः
Sanjna became the wife of Vivasvat, the goddess and daughter of Tvashtri.
सा तु भार्या भगवतो मार्त्तण्डस्यातितेजसः
She was the wife of the blessed Martanda, of immense brilliance.
अजानन्कश्यपः स्नेहात् मार्त्तण्ड इति चोच्यते
Out of affection, Kashyapa called him Martanda.
येनापि तापयामास त्रील्लोङ्कान्कश्यपात्मजः
By him, the son of Kashyapa, the three worlds were heated.
द्वौ सुतौ तु महावीर्यौं कन्यैका विदितैव च
There were two sons of great strength and one well-known daughter.
ततो यमो यमी चैव यमजौ संबभूवतुः
Then Yama and Yamī, the twins, were born.
असहन्ती स्वकां छायां सवर्णां निर्ममे पुनः
Unable to bear her own shadow, she created another of similar form.
प्राञ्जलिः प्रयता भूत्वा पुनः संज्ञामभाषत
With joined palms and devotion, she again spoke to Sanjna.
अहं यास्यापि भद्रं ते स्वमेव भवनं पितुः
I shall go, may it be well for you, to my father's own house.
इमौ च बालकौ मह्यं कन्या च वरवर्णिनी
These two boys are mine, and the girl of excellent complexion as well.
इमौ च बालकौ मह्यं तथेत्युक्ता तथा च सा
These two boys are mine; thus she spoke, and so it was.
पिता तामागतां दृष्ट्वा क्रुद्धः संज्ञामथाब्रवीत्
Seeing her arrive, the father, angry, spoke to Sanjna.
अगमद्वडवा भूत्वाच्छाद्य रूपमनिन्दिता
She went, taking the form of a mare, concealing her flawless appearance.
द्वितीयायां तु संज्ञायां संज्ञेयमिति चिन्त्य ताम्
But in the second conception, she was to be known as Saṃjñā—thus it was considered.
पूर्वजस्य मनोस्तुल्यौ सादृश्येन तु तौ प्रभू
Both were similar to the earlier-born Manu, equal to him in likeness, O mighty ones.
श्रुतश्रवा मनुस्ताभ्यां सावर्णिर्वै भविष्यति
From those two, Śrutaśravā and Manu, Sāvarṇi will indeed be born in the future.
मनुरेवाभवत्सो ऽपि सावर्णिरिति चोच्यते
That son also became Manu and is called Sāvarṇi.
चकाराभ्यधिकं स्नेहं त तथा पूर्वजेषु वै
He showed even greater affection for them than for the earlier-born children.
बहुशो जल्पमानस्तु सापत्न्यादतिदुःखितः
Often speaking with his co-wife, he became extremely distressed.
यदा संतर्जयामास च्छायां वैवस्वतो यमः
When Yama, son of Vivasvat, threatened Chāyā,
यदा तर्जयसे ऽकस्मात्पितृभार्यां यशस्विनीम्
When you, without cause, threaten your father's illustrious wife,
यमस्तु तेन शापेन भृशं पीडितमानसः
Yama, deeply troubled in mind by that curse,
भृशं शापभयोद्विग्नः संज्ञावाक्यैर्विनिर्जितः
Greatly agitated by fear of the curse, he was overcome by Saṃjñā's words.
बाल्याद्वा यदि वा मोहात्तद्भवान्क्षन्तुमर्हति
Whether from childhood or from delusion, you ought to forgive him.
तव प्रसादो नस्त्रातुमेतस्मान्महतो भयात्
Your favor alone can save us from this great fear.
