भक्ष्यित्वा तावन्योन्यं विनाशं समवाप्नुतः
Having devoured each other, those two met their end.

Himsā, remembered as Kali's wife, is the best, known for her deceitful nature.
नाके विघ्नश्च विख्यातो भद्रमोविधमस्तथा
In heaven, Vighna is renowned, as are Bhadramovidhama and others.
भद्रमश्चैकहस्तो ऽभूद्विधमश्चैकपात्स्मृतः
Bhadramas was one-handed, and Vidhama is remembered as one-footed.
रेवती विधमस्यापि तयोः पुत्राः सहस्रशः
Revati was also Vidhama's wife, and their sons numbered in the thousands.
राक्षसास्तु महावीर्याः संध्याद्वयविचारिमः
The Rakshasas, of great might, are said to be the offspring of the two twilights.
ग्रहस्ते राक्षसाः सर्वे बालानां तु विशेषतः
All Rakshasas are under the influence of the planets, especially over children.
बृहस्पतेर्या भगिनी वरस्त्री ब्रह्मचारिणी
Brihaspati's sister was a noble woman, a maiden devoted to chastity.
प्रभासस्य तु सा भार्या वसूनामष्टमस्य च
She became the wife of Prabhasa, the eighth of the Vasus.
त्वष्टा विराजो रूपाणि धर्मपौत्र उदारधीः
Tvashta, son of Dharma's grandson Viraja, was skilled in forms and noble-minded.
यःसर्वेषां विमानानि देवतानां चकार ह
He indeed fashioned all the aerial chariots of the gods.
प्रह्रादी विश्रुता तस्य पत्नी त्वष्टुर्विरोचना
Prahladi, famed and renowned, was the wife of Tvashta, also called Virocana.
देवाचार्यस्य महतो विश्वरूपस्य धीमतः
Of the great and wise preceptor of the gods, Visvarupa,
सुरेणुरिति विख्याता स्वसा तस्य यवीयसी
His younger sister was known as Surenu.

सा तु गत्वा कुरून्देवी वडवा रूपधारिणी

प्रासूत सा महाभाग त्वन्तरिक्षे ऽश्विनौ किल
There, that greatly fortunate one gave birth in the sky to the Ashvins.
कस्मान्मार्त्तण्ड इत्येष विवस्वानुदितो बुधैः
Why is Vivasvat, when not risen, called Martanda by the wise?
एतद्वेदितुमिच्छामो सर्वं नो ब्रूहि पृच्छताम्
We wish to know all this; tell us everything, as we ask.
गर्भवधं भ्रान्तः कश्यपो विद्रुतो भवेत्
Kashyapa, having committed the destruction of the embryo, wandered in confusion.
नैतन्न्यूनं भवादण्डं मार्त्तण्डस्त्वं भवानघ
This is not inferior; you are the Sun, O sinless one.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा नामान्वर्थमुदाहरन्
Hearing those words, he spoke the name according to its meaning.
तस्माद्विवस्वान्मार्त्तण्डः पुराणज्ञैर्विभाव्यते
Therefore, Vivasvan is recognized as Martanda by those learned in the Puranas.

शनैश्चरं तथैवैते मार्त्तण्डस्यात्मजाः स्मृताः
Shani and the others are remembered as the sons of Martanda.
तस्य संज्ञाभवद्भार्या त्वाष्ट्री देवी विवस्वतः
Sanjna became the wife of Vivasvat, the goddess and daughter of Tvashtri.
सा तु भार्या भगवतो मार्त्तण्डस्यातितेजसः
She was the wife of the blessed Martanda, of immense brilliance.
अजानन्कश्यपः स्नेहात् मार्त्तण्ड इति चोच्यते
Out of affection, Kashyapa called him Martanda.
येनापि तापयामास त्रील्लोङ्कान्कश्यपात्मजः
By him, the son of Kashyapa, the three worlds were heated.
द्वौ सुतौ तु महावीर्यौं कन्यैका विदितैव च
There were two sons of great strength and one well-known daughter.
