कृतकृत्या भृशं राममाशिषा समपूजयन्
Having accomplished their purpose, they honored Rāma with blessings.
गते मुनिवरे रामे देशात्तस्मान्निजाश्रमम्
When the great sage Rāma departed, they returned to their own hermitage from that land.
परिचङ्क्रम्य तां भूमिं यत्नेन महातान्विताः
They carefully paced that land, endowed with great qualities.
नित्यत्वा त्सर्वदेवानामधिष्ठानतया तथा
Because of its eternal nature, it is the abode of all the gods.
अपि रुद्रप्रभावेम प्रायान्नात्यन्तविप्लवम्
Even by the power of Rudra, there was not utter destruction.
एतद्धि देवसामर्थ्यमचिन्त्यं नृपसत्तम
This, O best of kings, is truly the inconceivable might of the gods.
दक्षिणोत्तरतो राजनयोजनानां चतुःशतम्
To the south and north, O king, it was four hundred yojanas.
कृतं रामेण महता न तु सज्जं महद्धनुः
This was accomplished by the great Rāma, but the great bow was not ready.
यस्य पुत्रैरयं खण्डो भारतो ऽब्धौ निपतितः
By whose sons this fragment, O Bhārata, fell into the ocean.
रामेणाभूत्पुनः सृष्टं योजनानां तु षट्शतम्
By Rāma it was again created, measuring six hundred yojanas.
ततः प्रभृति लोकेषु सागराख्यामवाप्तवान्
From then on, among the worlds, it became known as the ocean.
रामस्य कार्त्तवीर्यस्य सगरस्य महीपतेः
Of Rāma, Kārtavīrya, and Sagara, the lord of the earth.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्त मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपाद्धातपादे ऽष्टपञ्चशत्तमो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the fifty-eighth chapter in the third section, in the middle part, as spoken by Vāyu, of the glorious Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
परं शुश्रूषया भूयः पप्रच्छुस्तदनन्तरम्
Then, with utmost eagerness to listen, they again asked.
स्थितिं चैषां प्रभावं च ब्रूहि नः परिपृच्छताम्
Tell us, who are asking, their state and their power.
शृण्वतामुत्तराख्याने ऋषीणां वाक्य कोविदः
To those sages listening to the account of the north, the one skilled in speech—
ब्रुवतो मे निबोधंश्च ऋषिराह यथा मम
As I speak, listen attentively, for the sage spoke as I heard.
स्थितिं चैषां प्रभावं च क्रमतो मे निबोधत
Now hear from me, in order, their state and their power.
तस्याः पुत्रौ कलिर्वैद्यः स्तुता च सुरसुंदरी
Her sons were Kali, Vaidya, and the praised Surasundarī.
वैद्यपुत्रौ घृणिश्चैव मुनिश्चैव महाबलौ
The sons of Vaidya were Ghṛṇi and Muni, both of great strength.
भक्ष्यित्वा तावन्योन्यं विनाशं समवाप्नुतः
Having devoured each other, those two met their end.
स्मृता हिंसा कलेर्भार्या श्रेष्ठा या निकृतस्मृतिः
Himsā, remembered as Kali's wife, is the best, known for her deceitful nature.
नाके विघ्नश्च विख्यातो भद्रमोविधमस्तथा
In heaven, Vighna is renowned, as are Bhadramovidhama and others.
भद्रमश्चैकहस्तो ऽभूद्विधमश्चैकपात्स्मृतः
Bhadramas was one-handed, and Vidhama is remembered as one-footed.
रेवती विधमस्यापि तयोः पुत्राः सहस्रशः
Revati was also Vidhama's wife, and their sons numbered in the thousands.
राक्षसास्तु महावीर्याः संध्याद्वयविचारिमः
The Rakshasas, of great might, are said to be the offspring of the two twilights.
ग्रहस्ते राक्षसाः सर्वे बालानां तु विशेषतः
All Rakshasas are under the influence of the planets, especially over children.
बृहस्पतेर्या भगिनी वरस्त्री ब्रह्मचारिणी
Brihaspati's sister was a noble woman, a maiden devoted to chastity.
प्रभासस्य तु सा भार्या वसूनामष्टमस्य च
She became the wife of Prabhasa, the eighth of the Vasus.
त्वष्टा विराजो रूपाणि धर्मपौत्र उदारधीः
Tvashta, son of Dharma's grandson Viraja, was skilled in forms and noble-minded.
