भवन्तमागतो द्रष्टुं सहैभिर्मुनिपुङ्गवैः
I have come to see you, along with those eminent sages.
दातुमर्हति तत्क्षेत्रमेषां तोये च पूर्ववत्
You ought to grant that land to them, and its waters as before.
निरूप्य मनसा राममिद भूयो ऽब्रवीद्वचः
Having resolved in his mind, Rāma again spoke these words:
तथा हि मे वरो दत्तः पुरानेन विरिञ्चिना
"Indeed, such a boon was given to me long ago by Virin̄ci.
कातरं समुपायातो वशतां तव भार्गव
I have come to you, Bhārgava, fearful and submitting to your power.
कथं न कुर्यां कर्मेदमहं क्षत्त्रकुलान्तक
How could I not perform this deed, O destroyer of the Kṣatriya race?
तावत्संघारयिष्यामि भूमौ सलिलमात्मनः
I will gather the water of my own self upon the earth.
यथागतं प्रचिक्षेप धनुर्निर्भिद्य भार्गवः
Bhārgava, having pierced with his bow, cast it away as it had come.
स्रुवं जग्राह मतिमान्क्षप्तुकामो जलाशये
The wise one took up the ladle, wishing to pour it into the water basin.
अन्तर्हिते सरिन्नाथे रामः सुवमुदङ्मुखः
When the lord of the river had vanished, Rāma faced east with the ladle.
क्षिप्तत्वेन समुद्रे तु दिशमुत्तरपश्चिमाम्
Having thrown it into the ocean, he directed it toward the northwest.
तीर्थं शुर्पारकं नाम सर्वपापविमोचनम्
The holy place called Śūrpāraka, the remover of all sins.
तीर्थं तदन्तरीकृत्य स्रुवो रामकराच्च्युतः
Making that place a sacred site, the ladle slipped from Rāma’s hand.
यत्राभूद्रामसृष्टाया भुवो निष्ठाथ पार्थिव
There was the establishment of the land created by Rāma, O king.
उत्सारयित्वा सलिलं समुद्रस्तावदात्मनः
Having driven away the water, the ocean yielded his own self.
अनतिक्रान्तमर्यादो यथाकालं भृगूद्वहः
The illustrious Bhṛgu, never transgressing the boundary, acted at the proper time.
विज्ञाय पूर्वसीमान्तां भुवमभ्युत्ससर्ज ह
Having discerned the former boundary, he released the land.
नगरग्रमसीमानः किञ्चित्किञ्चित्क्वचित्क्वचित्
The boundaries of cities and villages, here and there, in various places.
तत्र दैवात्तथा स्थानान्निम्नत्वात्स प्रलक्ष्य तु
There, by divine will and from those places, he observed the low-lying areas.
यथाभिलषितं स्थानं प्रददौ प्रीतिपूर्वकम्
He gladly granted the desired place as requested.
कृतकृत्या भृशं राममाशिषा समपूजयन्
Having accomplished their purpose, they honored Rāma with blessings.
गते मुनिवरे रामे देशात्तस्मान्निजाश्रमम्
When the great sage Rāma departed, they returned to their own hermitage from that land.
परिचङ्क्रम्य तां भूमिं यत्नेन महातान्विताः
They carefully paced that land, endowed with great qualities.
नित्यत्वा त्सर्वदेवानामधिष्ठानतया तथा
Because of its eternal nature, it is the abode of all the gods.
अपि रुद्रप्रभावेम प्रायान्नात्यन्तविप्लवम्
Even by the power of Rudra, there was not utter destruction.
एतद्धि देवसामर्थ्यमचिन्त्यं नृपसत्तम
This, O best of kings, is truly the inconceivable might of the gods.
दक्षिणोत्तरतो राजनयोजनानां चतुःशतम्
To the south and north, O king, it was four hundred yojanas.
कृतं रामेण महता न तु सज्जं महद्धनुः
This was accomplished by the great Rāma, but the great bow was not ready.
यस्य पुत्रैरयं खण्डो भारतो ऽब्धौ निपतितः
By whose sons this fragment, O Bhārata, fell into the ocean.
रामेणाभूत्पुनः सृष्टं योजनानां तु षट्शतम्
By Rāma it was again created, measuring six hundred yojanas.
