Like the full moon, delightful to the minds of all people, together with all his subjects, he rejoiced greatly.
Thus, in the glorious Brahmanda Mahapurana, as spoken by Vayu, in the middle section, in the third supplementary part, in the Sagara narrative, the fifty-fifth chapter named 'The Attainment of the Kingdom by Sumati' concludes.
In brief and in detail, that which destroys sin has been described.
Its expanse measures nine thousand yojanas in circumference.
Having dug a thousand yojanas, eight were cast down.
From that time onward, among the worlds, it became known as the ocean.
The ocean, having surrounded it with its own waters, began to flow.
Here and there, beings arose, afflicted with great suffering.
On the western shore of the ocean, there is a land half a yojana wide.
In that region, O king, assemblies of perfected beings once dwelled.
That sacred place lies in the southern and western part of the ocean's shore.
There, they attained the highest liberation, free from return.
There, Śaṅkara always resides with the goddess and all the gods.
For men, sins quickly perish there, like dry leaves in a gust of wind.
Even those of wicked mind, merely by dwelling nearby,
O king, for men, it certainly comes to pass; it cannot be otherwise.
Those men die instantly, O king, and attain eternal heaven.
Of all sacred fields, this is the foremost, the abode of all holy waters.
Desiring perfection, certain sages once dwelled there.
Dwelling there even for a short time, they indeed attain that perfection.
Those who dwell there indeed attain the success they desire.
O King, in that place the fruit is a crore times greater than elsewhere.
Great sages endowed with intense austerity reside there.
All of them live there, deliberating together with one another.
Around the ocean drunk dry by Agastya, with the sons of kings,
and likewise in other regions—cities, villages, and mines—
O best of sages, what did the people dwelling there do then?
By what means, O Brahman, or in what manner? Tell me this.
In marshy regions and places destroyed by wicked men,
even there, some field-dwellers remained, enduring hardship.
