सृष्ट्वासौ भगवान्देवः पर्जन्यमितिविश्रुतम्
Having created these, the blessed Lord, renowned as Parjanya,
उच्चावचानि भूतानि गात्रेभ्यस्तस्य जज्ञिरे
From his limbs were born beings of various forms, both high and low.
सृष्ट्वा चतुष्टयं पूर्वं देवर्षिपितृमानवान्
First, he created the four kinds: gods, sages, ancestors, and humans.
सृष्ट्वा यक्षपिशाचांश्च गन्धर्वप्सरसस्तदा
Then he created Yakṣas, Piśācas, as well as Gandharvas and Apsarases.
अव्ययं च व्ययं चैव द्वयं स्थावरजङ्गमम्
He created both the imperishable and perishable, the two: stationary and moving beings.
तान्येव प्रतिपद्यन्ते सृज्यमानाः पुनःपुनः
These, being created again and again, return to those very forms.
तद्भाविताः प्रपद्यन्ते तस्मात्तत्तस्य रोचते
Endowed with that nature, they attain it; therefore, it pleases them.
विनियोगं च भूतानां धातैव व्यदधात्स्वयम्
The Creator himself assigned the functions of beings.
दैवमित्यपरे विप्राः स्वभावं भूतचिन्तकाः
Some wise men call it divine; those who contemplate beings call it inherent nature.
न चैव तु पृथग्भावमधिकेन ततो विदुः
But they do not know any separate existence beyond that.
स्वकर्मविषयं ब्रूयुः सत्त्वस्थाः समदर्शिनः
Those established in virtue and seeing equally speak only of the sphere of one's own action.
वेदशब्देभ्य एवादौ निर्ममे स महेश्वरः
In the beginning, the great Lord created from the very words of the Veda.
शर्वर्यन्ते प्रसूतानां पुनस्तेभ्यो दधात्यजः
At the end of the night, the unborn one again assigns to those who have been produced.
पञ्च कर्तॄन् हि स तदा मनसा व्यसृजत्प्रभुः
Then, by his mind, the Lord created five creators.
औषधीः प्रतिसंधत्ते रुद्रः क्षीणः पुनः पुनः
Rudra, when depleted, restores the plants again and again.
त्रिभिरेव कपालैस्तु त्र्यंबकैरोषधीक्षये
With only three skulls, Tryambaka restores the plants when they are destroyed.
गायत्रीं चैव त्रिष्टुप् च जगती चैव ताः स्मृताः
These are known as the Gāyatrī, Triṣṭubh, and Jagatī meters.
ताभिरेकत्वभूता भिस्त्रिविधाभिः स्ववीर्यतः
By means of these threefold forms, united in essence and by his own power,
त्र्यंबकः स पुरोडाशस्तेनेह त्र्यंबकःस्मृतः
Tryambaka is that sacrificial cake, and thus he is called Tryambaka here.
आकृतिः सुरुचे रूपं रुचिः श्रद्धाकरः स्मृतः
Form is called Ākṛti, beauty is Suruci, and radiance is Ruci; he is known as the inspirer of faith.
अथास्य सृजतः सर्गं प्रजानां परिवृद्धये
Then, as he was creating, for the increase of beings,
ततः स विदधे बुद्धिमर्थनिश्चयगा मिनीम्
He then produced intelligence, which leads to the determination of purpose.
रजः सत्त्वं परित्यज्य वर्तमानां स्वकर्मतः
Abandoning passion and goodness, he acted according to his own deeds in the present.
तमश्च व्यनुदत्पश्चाद् रजसातु समावृणोत्
Afterwards, he dispelled darkness and enveloped himself with passion.
अधर्माचरणा त्तस्य हिंसा शोको व्यजायत
From his unrighteous conduct, violence and sorrow arose.
ततः स भगवानासीत् प्रीतश्चैतं हि शिश्रिये
Then that Blessed One became pleased and took her as his own.
नारी परमकल्याणी सर्वभूतमनोहरा
A woman of supreme beauty, enchanting to all beings,
शतरूपेति सा प्रोक्ता सा प्रोक्तैव पुनः पुनः
She is called Śatarūpā, and so she is repeatedly named.
प्रक्रियायां यथा तुभ्यं त्रेतामध्ये महात्मनः
In the process, as was done for you, O great one, in the middle of the Tretā age,
ततो ऽन्यान्मानसान्पुत्रानात्मनः सदृशो ऽसृजत
Then he created other mind-born sons, resembling himself.
