क्षणमन्तर्मना भूत्वा जगाद सुरसत्तमः
After reflecting for a moment, the best of the gods spoke.
विनङ्क्ष्यन्त्यचिरेमैव सागरा नात्र संशयः
The Sāgaras will soon be destroyed; there is no doubt about this.
निमित्तमात्रमन्यत्तु स एव सकलेशिता
There will only be a nominal cause; he alone is the lord of all.
सर्वैर्भवद्भिरधुना तत्कर्त्तव्यमतं द्रितैः
Now, all of you must promptly carry out that which is to be done.
जातो जगद्धितार्थाय योगीन्द्रप्रवरो भुवि
For the welfare of the world, the foremost of yogis has been born on earth.
ध्यायन्नास्ते ऽधुनांऽभोधावेकान्ते तत्र कुत्र चित्
He is now meditating somewhere in solitude near the ocean.
ध्यानाव सानमिच्छन्तस्तिष्ठध्वं तदुपह्वरे
Desiring to meet him during his meditation, remain in that vicinity.
नत्वा तस्मै वदिष्यध्वं स वः श्रेयो विधास्यति
After bowing to him, you shall speak; he will bring about your welfare.
कुरुध्वं च तथा यूयं प्रवृत्तिं विबुधोत्तमाः
And you, O best of the gods, should act accordingly.
गत्वा तं विबुधश्रेष्टं ते कृताञ्जलयो ऽब्रुवन्
Having gone to that best among the gods, they spoke with joined palms.
उपद्रुतं जगत्सर्वंसागरैः संप्रणश्यति
The entire world, afflicted by the oceans, is being destroyed.
विष्णोरंशेन योगीन्द्रस्वरूपी भुवि संस्थितः
On earth, he abides in the form of the supreme yogi, as a portion of Vishnu.
स्वेच्छया ते धृतो देहो न तु त्वं तपतां वरः
Your body is sustained by your own will, not by you, O best among ascetics.
विधातुं स्वेच्छया ब्रह्मन्भवाञ्छक्रोत्यसंशयम्
O Brahman, you create at will; there is no doubt about this.
परित्राता त्वमस्माकं विनिवर्त्तय चापदम्
You are our protector; remove this calamity.
सागरैर्दह्यमानानां लोकत्रयनिवासिनाम्
For those dwelling in the three worlds, who are being burned by the oceans,
त्रातुमर्हसि तस्मात्त्वं लोकानस्मांश्च सुव्रत
Therefore, O virtuous one, you ought to protect the worlds and us.
इत्युक्तः सकलैर्देवैरुन्मील्य नयने शनैः
Thus addressed by all the gods, he slowly opened his eyes.
स्वकर्मणैव निर्दग्धाः प्रविनङ्क्ष्यन्ति सागराः
The oceans, scorched by their own actions, will perish.
अहं तु कारणं तेषां विनाशाय दुरात्मनाम्
I am the cause of their destruction, those evil-minded ones.
मम क्रोधाग्नि विप्लुष्टाः सागराः पापचेतसः
The oceans, whose minds are impure, have been consumed by the fire of my wrath.
तस्माद्गतज्वरा देवा लोकाश्चैवाकुतोभयाः
Therefore, let the gods and the worlds be free from distress and without fear.
तद्यूयं निर्भया भूत्वा व्रजध्वं स्वां पुरीं प्रति
So, all of you, become fearless and return to your own city.
कपिलेनैवमुक्तास्ते देवाः सर्वे सवासवाः
Thus addressed by Kapila, all the gods, together with Indra, departed.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राजा सगरः पृथिवीपतिः
Meanwhile, King Sagara, lord of the earth,
आहृत्य सर्वसंभारान्वसिष्ठानुमते तदा
Having gathered all the necessary materials, with Vashishtha's approval,
दीक्षां प्रविष्टो नृपतिर्हयसंचारणाय वै
The king entered the consecration for the horse-sacrifice.
संचारयित्वा तुरगं परीत्य पृथिवीतले
Having let the horse roam and circled the earth,
ततस्ते पितुरादेशात्तमादाय तुरङ्गमम्
Then, by his father's command, he took hold of the horse.
विधिचोदनयैवाश्वः स भूमौ परिवर्तिततः
By the injunction of the ritual, that horse was led around on the earth.
