पुत्राणां षष्टिसाहस्रबीजभूतो यतस्तव
For you are the seed of sixty thousand sons.
निःक्षिप्य सपिधानेषु रक्षणीयं पृथक्पृथक्
Place them in separate containers, each to be guarded individually.
यथोक्तसंख्या पत्राणां भविष्यति न संशयः
According to the stated number of leaves, it will happen—there is no doubt.
एवं ते षष्टिसाहस्रं पुत्राणां जायते नृप
Thus, O king, sixty thousand sons will be born to you.
राजा च तत्तथा चक्रे यथौर्वेण समीरितम्
And the king did exactly as Urva had instructed.
भित्त्वाभित्त्वा पुनर्जज्ञुः सहसैवानुवासरम्
Breaking open again and again, they were born suddenly, day after day.
ववृधुः संघशो राजन्षष्टिसाहस्रसंख्याया
They grew in groups, O king, numbering sixty thousand.
बभूवुस्ते दुराधर्षाः क्रूरात्मानो विशेषतः
They became unassailable, fierce in nature, especially so.
केशिनीतनयं त्वेकं बहुमान सुतं प्रियम्
But Keśinī bore one son, greatly honored and dear.
सचाप्यानन्दयामास स्वगुणैः सुहृदो ऽखिलान्
He delighted all his friends with his own virtues.
अजायत सुतः श्रीमानंशुमानिति विश्रुतः
A glorious son was born, renowned as Aṃśumān.
प्रीणयामास सुत्दृदः स्वपितामहमेव च
He pleased his father and grandfather with his steadfastness.
आविष्टो नष्टचेष्टो ऽभूत्स पिशाचेन केन चित्
He was possessed and rendered inactive by some piśāca.
कस्याचिद्विषये राज्ञः प्रभूतधनधान्यवान्
In the domain of a certain king, abundant in wealth and grain.
दृष्ट्वा ग्रहीतुमारेभे वणिग्लोभवरिप्लुतः
Seeing it, the merchant, overcome by greed, set out to seize it.
क्षुधितो ऽहं चिरादस्मिन्निवसन्निधिपालकः
I have been living here as the guardian of this treasure for a long time, and I am hungry.
कामतः प्रतिगृह्णीष्व निधिमेनं ममाज्ञया
Take this treasure as you wish, by my command.
आदत्त च निधिं तं तु पिशाचेनानुमोदितः
He took that treasure, with the approval of the piśāca.
प्रतिश्रुताप्रदानोत्थरोषं न श्रद्दधे नृप
O King, he did not trust the anger that arises from a promise unfulfilled.
अपनीतधनः सो ऽपि ममार व्यथितः क्षुधा
Deprived of his wealth, he too died, tormented by hunger.
बभूव काले केशिन्यां तनयो ऽन्वयवर्द्धनः
In time, a son named Anvayavardhana was born to Keśinī.
वायुभूतो ऽविशद्देहं राजपुत्रस्य भूपते
O King, having become like the wind, he entered the body of the prince.
मतिविभ्रंशमासाद्य मुहुस्तेन बलात्कृतः
Seized by him repeatedly, the prince suffered confusion of mind.
बालांश्च यूनः स्थविरान्योषितश्च सदा खलः
That wicked one always tormented children, youths, elders, and women.
ततः पौरजनाः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा तस्य कदर्यताम्
Then all the townspeople, seeing his miserliness,
राजा च तदुपश्रुत्य तमाहूय प्रयत्नतः
and the king, having heard of it, summoned him with care.
बहुशः प्रतिषिद्धो ऽपि पित्रा तेन महात्मना
Though often restrained by his great-souled father,
नाशकत्तं यदा पापाद्विनिवर्त्तयितुं नृपः
the king was unable to turn him away from evil.
लोकापवादभीरुत्वाद्विषयानत्यजत्तदा
Out of fear of public reproach, he did not give up his pleasures at that time.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे सगरचरिते ऽसमञ्जसत्यागो नामैकपञ्चाशत्तमो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the fifty-first chapter, called 'The Rejection of Asamanjas,' in the story of Sagara, in the third section of the middle part of the Vāyu-proclaimed Śrī Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
