पत्नीभ्यां सह धर्मात्मा भक्तियुक्तश्चिरं तदा
Then, together with his wives, the righteous one, full of devotion, remained for a long time.
मुनेरतनुतां प्रीतिं विनयाचारभक्तिभिः
Through humility, proper conduct, and devotion, he pleased the sage and won his favor.
राजपत्न्यौ समाहूय इदं वचनम ब्रवीत्
Summoning the king’s wives, he spoke these words.
दास्यामि तं न संदेहो यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुर्ल्लभम्
I will grant this, without doubt, even if it is exceedingly rare.
ऊचतुर्भगवान्पुत्रान्कामयावेति सादरम्
The venerable one said respectfully, 'Desire sons.'
राज्ञश्चप्रियकामेन वरो दत्तो ऽयमीप्सितः
Out of affection for the king, this boon has been granted as desired.
भवेतां ध्रुवमन्यच्च श्रूयतां वचनं मम
Let them surely be, and now hear my words further.
तथापि तस्य कल्पान्तं संभूतिश्च भविष्यति
Yet, at the end of the age, his birth will indeed take place.
अकृतार्थाश्च ते सर्वे विनङ्क्ष्यन्त्यचिरादिव
But all of them, having not fulfilled their purpose, will perish quickly.
अभीप्सितं तु यद्यस्याः स्वेच्छया तत्प्रकीर्त्यताम्
If she desires something, let it be declared according to her own wish.
वरयामास तनयं पुत्रानन्यास्तथा परा
One wife chose a son, and the others likewise chose sons.
सभार्यामनुमान्यैनं विससर्ज पुरीं प्रति
Having received his approval, he departed for the city with his wife.
रथमारुह्य वेगेन सप्रियः प्रययौ पुरीम्
Mounting his chariot with speed, he went to the city with his beloved.
आनन्दितः पौरजनै रेमे परमया मुदा
Delighted by the citizens, he enjoyed himself with supreme joy.
राज्ञे प्रावोचतां गर्भं मुदा परमया युते
With utmost happiness, they informed the king of the pregnancy.
सह संतोषसंपत्त्या पित्रोः पौरजनस्य च
Together with satisfaction and prosperity, both parents and the citizens rejoiced.
असूयताग्निगर्भाभं कुमारममितद्युतिम्
She gave birth to a boy, radiant as fire, of immeasurable brilliance.
असमञ्चस इत्येव नाम तस्या करोन्नृपः
The king named him Asamānjas, just so.
संप्रसूतं तु तं त्यक्तं दृष्ट्वा राजाकरोन्मनः
Seeing that the child was born and then abandoned, the king became anxious.
सम्यक् संभावितो राज्ञा तमुवाच त्वरान्वितः
The king, treating him with proper respect, spoke to him swiftly.
पुत्राणां षष्टिसाहस्रबीजभूतो यतस्तव
For you are the seed of sixty thousand sons.
निःक्षिप्य सपिधानेषु रक्षणीयं पृथक्पृथक्
Place them in separate containers, each to be guarded individually.
यथोक्तसंख्या पत्राणां भविष्यति न संशयः
According to the stated number of leaves, it will happen—there is no doubt.
एवं ते षष्टिसाहस्रं पुत्राणां जायते नृप
Thus, O king, sixty thousand sons will be born to you.
राजा च तत्तथा चक्रे यथौर्वेण समीरितम्
And the king did exactly as Urva had instructed.
भित्त्वाभित्त्वा पुनर्जज्ञुः सहसैवानुवासरम्
Breaking open again and again, they were born suddenly, day after day.
ववृधुः संघशो राजन्षष्टिसाहस्रसंख्याया
They grew in groups, O king, numbering sixty thousand.
बभूवुस्ते दुराधर्षाः क्रूरात्मानो विशेषतः
They became unassailable, fierce in nature, especially so.
केशिनीतनयं त्वेकं बहुमान सुतं प्रियम्
But Keśinī bore one son, greatly honored and dear.
सचाप्यानन्दयामास स्वगुणैः सुहृदो ऽखिलान्
He delighted all his friends with his own virtues.
