प्रजासु कश्चिल्लुब्धो वा कृपणो वापि नाभवत्
Among the people, none was greedy or miserable.
गुरुषु प्रणता नित्यं सद्विद्याव्यसनादृताः
They always bowed to their teachers, being devoted to true knowledge.
निसर्गात्खलसंसर्गविरता धर्मतत्पराः
By nature, they avoided association with the wicked and were intent on righteousness.
एवं सुबाहुतन्ये स्वप्रतापार्जितां महीम्
Thus, Subāhu and others possessed the earth, won by their own prowess.
शालिभूयिष्ठसस्याढ्या सदैव सकला मही
The entire land was always rich in crops, especially rice.
बभूव नृपशार्दूले तस्मिन् राज्यानि शासति
While that tiger among kings governed the realms, such was the state.
संविष्टैर्मणिविष्टरेषु नितरामध्यास्यमानामरैः शक्रस्येव विराजते दिवि सभा रत्नप्रभोद्भासिता
Seated on jewel-encrusted seats, surrounded by the gods, the assembly shone like Indra's court in heaven, radiant with the brilliance of gems.
द्रष्टुं काङ्क्षितराजकाः सतनयाविज्ञापयन्तो मुहुर्द्वास्थैरेव नरेश्वराय सुचिरं वत्स्यन्तमन्तःपुरे
Desiring to see the king, the eager rulers, along with their sons, repeatedly requested the doorkeepers, while the lord of men lingered long in the inner chambers.
किणीकृतौ विराजेते चरणौ तस्य भूभुजः
The feet of that ruler of the earth shone, adorned with anklets.
रत्नैर्भाति सभा तस्य गुहा सोमे रवी यथा
His assembly gleamed with jewels, like the moon and sun shining in a cave.
अनन्यशासनामुर्वीमन्वशासदरिन्दमः
The subduer of enemies governed the earth without rival rule.
न चापपात मुत् पुत्रमुखालोकनजृंभिता
There was no sorrow caused by the absence of sons, nor by the longing to see their faces.
अहो कष्टमपुत्रो ऽहमस्मिन्वंशे ध्रुवं तु यत्
Alas, it is unfortunate that I am sonless in this lineage, indeed.
निरयादपि सत्पुत्रे संजाते पितरः किल
When a good son is born, fathers are said to be freed even from hell.
महता सुकृतेनापि संप्राप्तस्य दिवं किल
Even after attaining heaven through great merit,
पिता तु लोकमुभयोः स्वर्लोकं तत्पितामहाः
the father indeed attains the world of both, and the grandfathers that of heaven.
अनपत्यतयाहं तु पुत्रिणां या भवेद्गतिः
But as I am without offspring, I do not attain the destiny that belongs to those with sons.
पदादैन्द्रात्किलाभिन्नमृद्धं राज्यमखण्डितम्
The prosperous, undivided kingdom, distinct from Indra’s realm,
इदं मत्पूर्वजैरेव सिंहासनमधिष्ठितम्
This very throne was occupied by my ancestors.
तस्मादौर्वाश्रममहं गत्वा तं मुनिपुङ्गवम्
Therefore, I went to the hermitage of Aurva, that eminent sage.
गत्वा तस्मै त्वपुत्रत्वं विनिवेद्य महात्मने
Having gone there, I revealed to that great-souled one my childlessness.
इति सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा सगरोराजसत्तमः
Thus, having resolved in his mind, Sagara, the best of kings,
स मन्त्रिप्रवरे राज्यं प्रतिष्ठाप्य ततो वनम्
Entrusted the kingdom to his foremost minister and then went to the forest.
जगाम रथघोषेण मेघनादातिशङ्किभिः
He departed with the sound of chariots, resounding like thunderclouds.
प्रियाभ्यां दर्शयन्राजन्सारङ्गांस्तिमितेक्षणान्
Showing his beloved wives, whose eyes resembled lotus petals,
वृक्षान्पुष्पफलोपेतान्विलोक्य मुदितो ऽभवत्
He became delighted, beholding trees laden with flowers and fruits.
सुस्निग्धपल्लवच्छायैरभितः संभृतं नगैः
Surrounded on all sides by mountains covered in the shade of tender, glossy leaves,
श्रोत्राभिरामजनकैस्संघुष्टं सर्वतोदिशम्
Filled in every direction with sounds delightful to the ear,
प्रसूनस्तबकानम्रबल्लरीवेल्लितद्रुमम्
With trees swaying under the weight of drooping clusters of blossoms,
उन्मत्तशिखिसारङ्गकूजत्पक्षिगणान्वितम्
Accompanied by flocks of birds—peacocks and deer—calling out in intoxication,
